Div 2 2025

Great effort by all at Boronia FNC to go back to back. 3 premierships in 5 years is a remarkable achievement especially when the realignment of divisions impacted on the club not being promoted in 2 of those years. Many clubs would have seen them regress when this resulted as players often move to clubs in higher divisions to test themselves. Matthew Clark, Steve Teakel and the committee have the club in a great position going forward. They are a club ‘on the up’ and will do very well in 2025.

Congratulations to both East Burwood and Croydon on their premierships too.

Finally I am sure DavefromBoronia is savouring the success as he has been a key player in where the club is currently positioned. Enjoy!

Sorry to spoil the party Nick. Rams Reserves were on a mission for the coach who announced his retirement before the game:
Pretty hard to stack a team when all three teams play in the grand final. Well done on the win.

Thanks for your kind words. Like all the Boronia Faithful, I am very happy tonight and extremely proud of the club and our players, coaches, volunteers and sponsors. A lot of hard work by some very good people has been rewarded. GO HAWKA!!!

Something not right at a club when the Seniors are terrible and the Reserves win the flag.

You would hope the seniors are appropriately embarrassed.
The Reserves were close to forfeiting a few times but retired players turned up to play as they love and respect the coach. The whole playing group loves and respects Choco. Everyone at the club loves and respects Choco. He is now retired with 500 club clubs and a few Premierships, with the respect of everyone. What's common here? "Respect".

Attended the last night of training for 2024 at EB yesterday. The wind was a nice reminder of how cold it can be in Winter. Things of note for Cliff, Robbie Ward is back at EB as Senior Assitant Coach. Robbie and Kyle played together over the years. 60 in attendance plus the U17's/U19's. I noticed a few Vermont, and Blackburn players. There were other new faces but I have no idea who they are. Dove's coaching/direction and drills were impressive as were all the assistants. The squad appeared to enjoy training, which could be knowing that snags and the beers were waiting when they finished. Training is due back on Jan 20.

Looks like a tough one to judge, hard to know where to look after two years of complete domination by Boronia.

I think it looks wide open.

Croydon and Mulgrave were next in line ladder-wise, would look for them to be back up there again.

Not convinced Waverley can go back to the well. All the finals losses will have to take a toll. Third coach in three years isn’t ideal.

Templestowe should be thereabouts again.

Heathmont look to have recruited but needed to, they only won 7 games last year.

Surrey Park a bit of an unknown, it’s a step up, and it’s not as though they are a dominant D3 team team coming up. I reckon maybe 4th or 5th is their ceiling this year, they will be very competitive, but I don’t see them challenging for the flag this year.

Ringwood and Lilydale will be ok I think, both probably in the midst of rebuilds.

Wanny South will struggle I think, not convinced there’s a massive gap between D1 and D2 and they won one game last year.

EB for the drop for mine, 8th last year, lost a couple of big players, and the ridiculous coaching turnover means they need to start again each year. Might bite this year I think.

But as they say… wtf would I know!!!

There’s a really good write up on Surrey Park’s off season in Leader Footy today

Interesting ins and outs, their main goalkicker Jake Summers has retired. Ruck Robbie Swan has gone to Mooroolbark.

Sam Harte from Blackburn should be a good in, as will Jake Van Der Plight from Leongatha. Couple of really good recruits.

Returning ruckmen are hard to judge, Jacob Woodfull hasn’t played for 18 months with injury and his brother Ben is also coming from collegians but only played 2 games last year.

They have a bunch of other recruits but they’re all reserves or U19 players.

Hayden Telford should play seniors in div 2, was the leading goal kicker in prem reserves. Is he a tall forward? He could be the summers replacement?

It’s a tricky one with Premier reserves players. Some will slot into seniors no problems, but I’ve 100% seen many that have dropped down a couple of divisions with the expectation they’ll be locks for senior footy and it doesn’t work out like that. Senior footy, at least in D1 or D2, is a step up and some are simply reserve grade level players.

For example looking at Telford, I’d question how a guy plays every game and kicks 47 goals yet doesn’t get a run in the seniors. Would look like they didn’t even consider him a senior player. Not like Blackburn are flush with gun goalkickers in the seniors.

And of course you have the reserves quality which at times is complete garbage with clubs struggling to put a side out. Telford kicked 20 of his 47 goals against Norwood (didn’t win a game, percentage of 3%) and Berwick (only beat Norwood, percentage of 20%).
