Really no different to Freo getting the pick that they end up with due to under-performing and injuries. Teams lose games due to players being suspended all the time and this impacts their ladder position.

Saying that Essendon should not get the number 1 pick despite finishing bottom (due to players being suspended) is like saying that Port Adelaide should be playing in the finals despite finishing 9th (due to players being suspended).

If Essendon were to be demoted in the draft order, so should port Adelaide, Melbourne, stkilda and western bulldogs who all may have finished higher if they didn't have players suspended. Now if you are demoting them in the draft order you should promote them on the ladder. Brisbane didn't finish last so why should they get pick 1.

very different losing players due to a club sanctioned doping regime and losing players to injury or a couple of weeks suspension.

this is hopefully a one off situation. there would be only a few situations where i could envision taking draft picks off a team being the correct option.

1) widespread doping/performance enhancing regime. ie Essendon
2) salary cap cheating.
3) match fixing.
4) draft tampering.
