Just my opinion voiced here....if you all remember back to when he left the bears and came to Melb, North paid for his transportation and gave him a 50k cheque to which he returned because he wanted to join Collingwood and play in premierships....I believe he never rated us then, and we shouldn't rate him now considering he is untried, doesn't fit the North culture mould, and I don't think he would be suitable as a long term loyal North coach if he were to be successful....Other opinions????????

I'm not convinced on bucks, he knows the game for sure, but he's quite abrupt in his comments, so if the boys didn't appreciate dean's comments, they won't like bucks. He'd be respected and demanding of the players, but his people skills are questionable.

This club made a massive mistake once in getting Ron Barrassi. We should never make that same mistake again.

By the way Marge, I was being sarcastic.

Appointing Bucks will be the single most important decision this club will make......the decision to stay in Melbourne was easy....the hard bit is making it work........we need to get the very best at the club so that we not only are successful on but off also.........Bucks will bring the sort of respect that coaches rarely bring..........our club needs it.........we need to make it happen...........

We could do worse. Reads the game well. Vossy's success (so far) is precedent. Would have a fire in the belly (think: tossing away the Norm Smith in disgust). Would have more respect as a past player. Has broader exposure and credibility. Would be a better salesman than most. I imagine if he does lack 'people skills', he'd get away with it more. Would give the club more profile. Would sell more memberships for next year (and beyond, if successful).

And, I'm not attached, nor sold. If Hirdy was interested, I'd prefer him as an untried coach.

Its a fair question. I think so. All indicators are that he will be quality. Quality player. Quality bloke. Media savvy. High profile. Extremely professional. Get him onboard now.

Euge? Are you there mate? Don't let me down. Sign Bucks today!

and the comments about costs..........I have a sneaking suspicion that membership increases will pay that bill as will corporate sponsorships....

Im happy to take a pay cut to get him onboard!!

What Buckley would bring to the club in an off field marketing capacity alone would be worth the risk.
Our club needs to make a statement to the football world, we need to be taken notice of and by appointing someone with the profile of Buckley it makes this job so much easier.

Buckley's presence would attract sponsorships etc., the list goes on and on.

The commencement of this transition is being handled with dignity and diplomacy by Dean and our club. Kudos for the way the press interview is being conducted and handled.
Dean is aware that he would not fit into the profile of our new era and I have great respect for his awareness of this.

The North Melbourne Football Club is about to enter a new era - the new dawn has just begun.

Bring it on

Not sold. It would be irresponsible of the club if they limit their targets to just one man. As long as we don't hire Grant Thomas or Gary Ayres i'll be happy. Surrounding our new coach with talented assistants should also be a priority. Whoever the new coach is I want them to be judged on coaching ability not membership pulling ability.

I don't understand all the Buckley-love on this board. Yes he is a high-profile football person who would bring a lot of exposure to a club that does not get alot but profile is not everything. I think North Melbourne people place alot of undue importance on profile but if you perform on the field, the exposure will come. So you need the best man for the job and Buckley has no coaching experience, you are judging his potential on his media comments alone which I must say have impressed me as well. I think it would be a huge risk and I'm not sure it would be worth it.

Spot on. A total clean out would be good.

Both would be good (and the latter tends to follow the former, of course). :D

Kidding right?

If the price is right.
Personally, in the new era we're heading into, I'd love to see a lot less of this type of thing.

Who cares what the price is. If we want to match it with the best, then surely price shouldn't be a factor. We want to be seen as a club amongst the elite, not a club that even now, is still willing to pass up the best because he costs a penny or two more than the next bloke.

In a perfect fantasy world I'd agree with you 100% but unfortunately we live in the real world where financial considerations are a reality. We will remain under financial pressure until we get a fair deal from the stadiums.

I can see a definite financial windfall in forking out big money for Buckley - but that shouldn't be considered in isolation to our whole financial situation.

Spot on, most of the media is based around perception. The poverty mentality that stems from even JB and some supporters has to stop. At worst the AFL has buckets of coin that can be invested in worthwhile or perceived decent investments. Our poverty need only be an issue when selling games, not ensuring success.

Of course the stadium deals issue is the bigger picture. Until/unless this is resolved, we'll continue to struggle IMHO.

And/but, I reckon the issue of money paid to the coach is somewhat separate and will reflect how entrepreneurial or conservative our administration is.

Do we take the risk, as we did with the likes of Barassi, and trust that it will reap rewards on and off the field, including financially, or do we take a more financially conservative approach and hire the best we can afford with our current budget?! Interesting times ahead.
