One of my mates is an eagles supporter, but we also both support* Tottenham. He refuses to belittle or make fun of me because he understands the pain and torment of supporting a team with passion that continuously rips your heart out. Plus he realises supporting such a club inadvertently has a direct case to alcoholism and nihilism.

*He's more Spurs/eagles. I'm more Freo/Spurs**

**Bloody tough combination and I highly recommend avoiding it at all costs. I supported the Western Force too :disrelieved:

I love cricket but I have not supported the Australian cricket team since the WACA test in 1997 and indeed I actively barrack for whoever they are playing. For ages it was pretty tough as to which has been the harder path, supporting Freo or supporting whoever Australia is playing in the cricket :'(

How come after the WACA test in 1997? What happened then?

I had finished Uni for the year and went with my friends to the test match, getting there early. The bagpipe band from Trinity College were entertaining the crowd and they were dressed in kilts, not massively my cup of tea but I respect people's skill at playing music. They formed an honour guard to welcome the Australian team on to the ground. As Shane Warne walked through the honour guard, he was pointing at the boys and making wanking gestures while pointing at them. I have always presumed it was in reference to the kilts or bagpipes, but doesn't really matter what it was.

As I watched in stunned silence I thought to myself, I cannot support a team that has a player like that in it. I sort of instantly became nuetral to the Aus cricket team, but over the next few months/years realised there was a lot of other behaviour that I just couldn't agree with. I realised that there were very few of the Australian cricket team that I liked the way they behaved on the cricket field, particularly of the big names / regulars.

I thought as those players retired, I would come back to supporting the Aus cricket team, but it has never really come. I don't know about you but I rarely make a conscious decision to support a sports team, it just comes. And my support for Australian cricket has never returned. My friend met a guy in Brisbane 15 years ago who hadn't supported Australia in the cricket since 1946 when Bradman didn't walk. So I still have about 40 years of holding a grudge to match that guy ;)

Its called hubris.
I became a supporter of "the other team" about the same time...the more under the dog, the better.
Long before "sandpapergate".
It would never happen at Freo...

I agree with the above sentiment, McGrath spitting, Warne a primary school yard tosspot, Slater faking mental illness to cover his fondness for extracurricular activities, sandpaper gate ect. But I also think of gentlemen like Border, Steve Waugh and Adam Gillchrist who wouldn't wait to see the finger go up to walk. Equal parts good and bad. Every team has its share of tools and gentleman. But I was born here and although I find cricket plain boring these days, I'm happy to see us win. Especially against the Pohms, Indians and Kiwis. Oh and South Africa and Pakistan. Did I leave anyone out?

Oi oi oi

Speaking of the Eagles, I see where they have changed their mind again about running a team in the WAFL.
When you see this happening, it is no wonder that WAFL lovers have no respect for them.
So many bag the alignment that Fremantle and Peel have, but never seem to critisise the Eagles for playing "with " the WAFL.
What they are doing is not fair play.

Source?

I thought they just appointed a new coach (Rob Wiley).

Went to a game here in Canberra with a friend's dad. She's Freo, her hubby's Freo, and I assumed that dad would also be Freo, so my conversation starter was "Geez, don't those new West Coast gurnsies look terrible?".

He's a WC guy.

The not-so-new-now bright blue still looks crap though.

Like a lead balloon I guess.

They said earlier they were not interested in fielding another side in the WAFL.
I read it, saw it onTV.Not sure how you missed it.
Where did you read it? Your post said they’d changed their mind again but there is no indication that is so. You might have imagined it.

As you say, you rarely make a conscious decision about sporting teams - I think I also formed the exact same opinion about the Australian cricket team about the same time and went from a massive fan of them to then supporting anyone they were and are playing against. I still like the nostalgic idea of some of the legends like Lindsay Hassett, Keith Miller, Lindwall and Allan Border a bit latter, and Mark Waugh was still a beautiful batsman to watch in the 90s, even if his involvement in betting was a bit off putting, but it gave me more appreciation for Tendulkar, Jonty Rhodes, Ambrose and Alistair Cook. I wish there were more Kane Williamsons and Joe Roots in cricket these days.

I also around the same time switched over a few year from following the Brisbane Bears -> Lions to following Fremantle, although I have always had a soft spot for the that team. I was in my teens back then and I remember going to an Eagles game and being the only one with a brisbane cap on.

I have a couple of highly intelligent and cute female friends who support the Eagles and Collingwood respectively; it is kind of funny because they are otherwise sweet people who probably deep down know better, but it just gives me an entry point of weakness to get them totally flustered and riled up when I tease them about it.
