Ugh everyone's favourite Etihad bugbear, the roof open on a bright sunny day. Either you love it coz sun or you hate it due to the bloody shadows.
The worst ones are the ones on the eastern side where the foreground grass is in the sun but the player is in the shadow, that's what makes it worse than your standard stadium shade. That and the poor alignment but that's also not an issue if they shut the bloody roof and give the best possible viewing image.

Before they built it, I saw a largish model of it under a strong spotlight.

That effect was immediately clear to me, and I know very little. Too many people in power measuring their dicks when they built it

Or just going "we'll shut the roof and get fully floodlight footy, basically the glamour of a night game in the middle of the day".
And then the AFL goes "nahh the nice sun is more important than people being able to see the footy."

They're actually seat covers. They'd come straight off. But they're a part of a sponsorship deal so I doubt they're coming off soon.
Probably come off now for the cricket/soccer season; I'm pretty sure they're an AFL-games-only thing.

It is an Etihad Stadium initiative.

In an Australian first, Etihad has introduced an ambitious strategy to lease to corporate Australia the dome's internal and external real estate for mega-size marketing installations, giving carte blanche to full ground-to-ceiling branding of the venue's internal seats and walkways.

The campaign is designed to engage with fans as they enter the venue, marketing experts say.

The move by the venue's current owner Melbourne Stadiums Limited may spark another round of hostilities with AFL management.

Patties Foods pie brand, Four’n Twenty is partnering with Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium to become the first brand to execute a branded zone within the stands.

Hot pies are virtually the official cuisine of Aussie Rules football, and for this 2016 AFL season the area behind the goal posts at the Coventry End of Etihad Stadium in Melbourne’s Docklands is transforming into a dedicated ‘Pie Zone’.

7000 of the stadium’s 50,000 are getting yellow and black seat wraps, creating giant Four’n Twenty branding.

Other Four’n Twenty branding will also be featured throughout Etihad Stadium in select areas.

Patties Foods managing director and CEO, Steven Chaur says, “Four’n Twenty has an incredibly long-standing association with football so establishing a partnership with Etihad Stadium to engage AFL fans was a natural fit for the brand.”

To activate the branding, Four’n Twenty is also initiating a season-long AFL activation campaign, ‘Pie Time Scratch ‘N’ Win’, to reward footy fans seated within the zone. Patrons seated within the Four’n Twenty zone will receive a scratch card for the chance to instantly win one of 420 pies during ‘Pie Time’, which occurs between the 20 minute mark to 24 minutes and 20 seconds in the first and second quarters. However, free pies will only be on offer should a goal be scored during this period.

“Our goal was to create a destination to engage AFL fans and enhance their overall experience during the game. The Four’n Twenty zone also builds on the well-established Australian tradition of enjoying a hearty meat pie at the footy,” Chaur says.

In the case that neither team scores during ‘Pie Time’ or should pies be left unclaimed, Four’n Twenty will donate the pies to The Father Bob Maguire Foundation.

I wonder if it'll stay for the cricket. The bottom section would be covered in black for the sight-screen but the yellow above with "FOUR 'N' TWENTY" would still be visible.
Maybe they'll give away free pies for a hat-trick, in a "Four 'n' Twenty20" promotion :p

Potential corporate suitors would also be attracted by getting their brands in front of other high-profile events – as well as key AFL games.

and if its an AFL thing, why would it cause hostilities with the AFL?

Because it's an agreement between Four 'n' Twenty and Etihad. The AFL get no say in it, no benefit from it, and it's a massive advert for a non-sponsor of the AFL.
Also it highlihgts empty seats because the empiter the area is the more it shows up.

So....did the paint-marking guy at Etihad forget that he wasn't marking up for an AFL game today? The centre circle still has the Toyota logo in it!
