Was at the game and they looked pretty cool, only problem was it meant the roof was shut and it was stinking hot in there

Was going to say with it being so hot outside, and the place not being air-conditioned when the roof is closed, the closed roof would've made the conditions worse inside than what they were outside!

Not enclosing the stadium for climate control does seem like a pretty big flaw. In fairness when they started building it in the 1990s summer sport would've barely, if at all, been on the radar. Melbourne Victory and the A-League didn't start until 2005 (and didn't use the stadium until 2006). Renegades and Big Bash League even more recently.

That and the flame things they kept setting off just made everything worse. I think that's one of the things they look at the temperature and just cancel for the night.

It might not have been part of the original design to have it closed in summer for a near sell out crowd and sure on a night like that climate control is not going to be easy at all, but damn I hope they try a bit harder next time

Those screens are a horrible idea. One of the few things I dislike about Etihad is how much restricted view there already is, introducing screens in the middle of the ground I can only imagine will increase obstructed view massively if you're any further than half way back on the top level.

Given the screens are only 96m2 and hang in the very middle of the ground itself, its likely the only view being obstructed is people who are trying to see other people in the top of the opposite stand. Anyone looking down at the oval should have had as unobstricted view as if the screens werent even there.

Would be a pretty cool thing to have, add some glitz to the ground, but I'm someone who loves going to Etihad with the roof open. During daylight savings, sitting up the top at 8pm watching the soccer and seeing those buildings pop out is always great. And I like those early and late round matches of the footy where the sun's beaming in.

Will Essendon flush out the AFL on its intentions at Docklands:
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/essendon-seek-more-games-at-the-mcg-20170131-gu2lh9.html
The Bombers, the only AFL club to hold their own deal with the Docklands stadium, have indicated their 17-year agreement, struck at the start of the millennium, has become dated. Club bosses have reached the view that they will push for an extra annual home game at the MCG from next year.

With North Melbourne, St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs waiting to renegotiate new direct stadium deals with the AFL there seems every indication that Etihad's struggling tenant clubs will see little if any improvement this season in terms of match returns.

Where are the huge savings for tenant clubs claimed to be on offer by so many BF posters ?

footy should not be played indoors, bulldoze it and upgrade Princes Park
Yep... Bulldoze a perfectly fine stadium in the middle of the CBD with short walking access to one of the main transport hubs in Melbourne which the AFL now owns/will make considerable money out of, for a stadium which would lose any charm it has in any possible re-build, with terrible transport access for 95% of the city.
BF logic... **Facepalm**

Both. Its been known for some time that the deals werent going to be renegotiated in time for the 2017 season.

No, I didn't know that the AFL admin was not able to redress the Docklands deals for season 2017, any reason given? Perhaps Caro wasn't aware either, though I'd suggest her sources are pretty good.

NO POST-ADELE BLUES FOR ETIHAD
JON RALPH

ETIHAD Stadium ground staff have replaced a third of the playing surface ahead of Saturday’s Melbourne-St Kilda clash.

The stadium has just six days to replace the grass coverage after two Adele concerts last weekend.

But while the Gabba’s curator failed to prepare his ground for the AFLW Grand Final despite three weeks notice, Etihad officials are cautiously optimistic.

They are confident of a strong crowd over 40,000 for the clash of two of the AFL’s rising stars for the 4.35pm game.

The turf is laid in deep slabs with an extensive soil base so is not expected to shift underfoot.

Etihad Stadium spokesman Bill Lane was adamant the stadium would be safe for play.

“The job is nearly done. The proof of the pudding will be in the playing on Saturday but we are happy with how it has gone,’’ he said.

“It is around one third of Etihad, it is blending in well and aesthetically it will look OK. Replacing turf is part and parcel of our business.”

Lane said with a bumper Etihad Stadium crowd expected the venue was urging fans to arrive well ahead of the clash.
