Made the mistake of driving back to home to Footscray from the east, not realising the Essendon game just finished today.

Footscray road was closed, 40,000+ people at the game and it still didn't take too long. It really is in such a great location. Transportation wise it couldn't be planned any better.

The planning and design around the stadium though is terrible and won't be easily fixed with ad-hock design solutions, as the problems with shadows and wind tunnels created by the buildings built close by will make it hard to grow any vegetion to soften the area.

Also with the wrong orientation of the stadium the argument of whether to keep the roof open on sunny days will always be there.

Had they got the axes right, set back the nearby buildings (and demanded more walkability thtough them) and designed more greenspace around the statium, it would be much more loved. But even 300 mil does nothing to fix most of those problems.

In summary, a dump close to the city.

Hey guys. Not sure what forum this question should go in, this is closest to it. I have been looking at purchasing either a Centre Wing or Medallion Club membership. It's impossible to find prices anywhere. I have sent in an enquiry and waiting for the return phone call or email, but while I'm waiting I was wondering if anyone here knows the pricing of both memberships?
Thanks in advance.
Very expensive!

For games like this North v Fremantle fixture, would it be worth not even opening the top level? Push everyone down.
Or, play at a smaller venue :p

We tried that a few years ago...but we ran out of seats on level 1 so had to open level 3 anyway with no food or drink shops open

It's not uncommon to see all of the food outlets closed on level 3 and the top deck remain available for seating. Most Carlton games against interstate sides over the past few years I've seen this happen.

Docklands, re its CBD location & superior public transport options on its doorstop, is one of the best located in the world -& has a roof to keep the rain out!

The plan is mainly to open up the waterfront area, develop the pier etc -& the AFL offices there will probably be relocated, to maximise public facilities facing the water. The northern side also has plenty of room for new public facilities. The AFL wants to develop new, profitable, non-game 365 pd entertainment revenues.

The Vic. Govt. wants to revive the waterfront's grossly underperforming tourism potential, bringing economic riches to Victoria. This was a major reason for initially developing Docklands. The Canary Wharf redevelopment in London was also a model, which become successful as an high-rise office & residential area initially. It has also been later rejuvenated by major shopping precincts being added. Its surface water area is very small & much less appealing cf. Docklands.

Soldier Field Stadium, Chicago, is the modern 365 day pa prototype.

If they could ever cover over the train tracks and significantly extend out the bridge from the station around to Gate 5 to be an open area it would do wonders for the ground. Grass most of it (or fake grass if really needed) and allow kids room for kick to kick, games of cricket in the big bash. Set up pop up bars or food truck festivals for big games and turn it into a bit of a gathering place. Might give the stadium a bit of the space and greenery it needs.

You referring to the plan by the AFL to fund the redevelopment ? The revamp of the Harbour Town shopping centre is already underway.

The AFL wants the VIC . Govt. to spend c. $300,000,000 on the stadium (mainly new entertainment facilities on the waterfront side to capture & highlight the water views) & surrounding area - to create 365 day pa entertainment facilities. This will provide the much needed revitalisation of Docklands, bring more visitors, tourists etc. to Docklands ie the Stadium will have convention centres, restaurants, reception rooms, night club, bars, rent all/part of the field ( It has a roof!).
In the 90's, Docklands area was envisaged as a major tourist attraction -this hasn't eventuated, much to the chagrin of restaurants etc there.

AFL offices will have to be relocated to another location. The AFL want to monetise their investment/ownership. As a Not-for-Profit, the AFL doesn't have to pay any Commercial Land Tax (unlike previous Super Fund owners).
The precinct would be made more attractive & profitable for all Docklands land owners/businesses. Vic. Govt still owns land there. Thus, the $300,000,000 will be "sold" publicly as a Win-Win-Win for all parties!(How jolly).

As of 30.6.16, DS had revenues of $76,000,000 -for a $3,000,000 profit. The AFL, obviously, wants that profit greatly increased.

Soldier Field Stadium, Chicago is the modern, successful prototype of a stadium generating revenues 365 day pa.

R.Gunston, AFL, says DS will remain fully operational whilst any rebuilding work is occurring; & that the Vic. Govt. regards DS as an important asset in the heart of the city, & is vital to the Docklands precinct.

Bulldoze it.
If tonight's game was to the MCG I would have been there.
Does that say more about you and your level of support for your team than it says about the venue though?
I dare say you'd not be happy if Carlton or a group of Carlton players didn't show up but "if the game was at the MCG I would have been there", or if that was their excuse for the result last night.

It says my level of passion for joint is as low as it gets and bulldozing it would make me feel so much better about it's place in football history.
I was still going until being on train line and finding out signal disruptions meant massive delays so gave up and went back home to watch on tv.
If it was at Waverley in same situation I would have just driven there as an alternative as it would have been 20 minutes away at tops in same situation rather than know trying to get in city with trains stuffed I was looking at not getting there until well into second quarter.

lol. Game should've been at Geelong with that crowd but I don't hear Carlton fans asking for it to be moved to the home team's away venue....

Funny thing is, if it was at Geelong itself I bet I would have got there because the experience of going to a different ground with more character would have been more appealing as an experience.

Its your passion for the game, chosing not to go, prefering TV. So many games to choose from in Melbourne while other venues/markets have excess demand.
Just moving games home to Geelong, to Hobart, to Launceston, Darwin, Alice, Cairns and still the Melbourne market has excess supply, so 78 blames it on the venue ...

Now that's an entirely different story. If there were signal disruptions and massive delays on the line between you and the MCG chances are you woulda given up and gone home to watch on TV as well. That's nothing to do with the venue; that's the train line and you having a whinge.

Actually no you are wrong again with your outsider projections!!!!
MCG on the eastern side of CBD and not needing to navigate getting through actual city is still an option via car and tram but getting to Docklands via going through city with so little time to game time, give up and not bother at that point. The thought of driving through city and getting a car park and extra cost at that point....plzz get a reality check

You used to be a regular may be news to you, now you'll only go to the G and you cant admit it.
God you are an idiot with nature of your pathetic contributions. I have already been to Docklands this year. I hate the joint but still reluctantly go there when no other choice. Do not bother making comments when you got no idea of my situation.

There is seriously no need to abuse purely because your original post only gave us half the information to respond to.
"I hate the venue for reasons xyz. Also it's on the other side of town to me and there's minimal parking, add to that the train issues last night and I was unable to get there. If the game had been at the G I could have driven with many less issues and got there in time to see most of the game but being at Etihad I wouldn't have made it until after half time, so I went home and watched on TV."
And then all of us may have given you sympathy. Instead you were just another "I hate Etihad we should knock it down" post and then followed it up with angry rebuttal.
