Look at Hawthorn today, you can see the signs. It's exciting. Forgive losses, go nuts at the wins. We're in the throw the remote at the TV in a rage phase whether we win or lose.
Great example. I watched their last two games and their strategy, structure and buy in from the players is sensational. I suggest those that think our structure is ok take the time to watch other teams and how they are coached.

* me, just watched Bevo’s brief. Should he even be around the players if he’s that unwell? He looks and sounds awful.
he sounded drained and even a bit pissed off at a few in there. I reckon he thought we could get them.
once again however, easy misses early on, some howler umpiring decisions and playing a man down hurt us in the end

I think I've got a new player to hate and it's Butters. Smart Arse little *er. Wish we had someone like him
I love Butters. Still wish he was on our team. But he has become a real campaigner this year. Always digging into opponents, pushing downed opponents into the turf, wrestling, smart ass smug looks. Has probably spent time with Oliver in the off season. Can still be a gun and hard player minus the stuff that makes opposing fans not respect you. Still, I would take 100 Butters on our team any day of the week.

Finlayson gets under my skin. Always has. Know he and his family is going through hell off the field and wish him well, but on field he still antagonises, the smart arse shushing of the crowd etc - did the same at the Plastics.

It's absolutely strange to see how our quality of ball movement had dropped off since 2021. We finished the 2021 H&A season with the second most points for, even including the debacle of the last few rounds post Bruce injury that season.

Our ability to win contests around the ground, maintain possession out of those contests, and defend, both around and behind the ball, has held up. It's why we're vaguely a league average or above league average play for the last season and a half.

The issue is that our ball movement (largely due to pace and kicking) has fallen to the levels of a bottom 4 team. There are awful teams that move the ball better than us. I'm talking defensive, attacking, turnover, stoppage - whatever - just the phase of play that involves us convering uncontested possession to a goal. It's woeful and has been especially poor for 3 weeks now, especially to our relatively solid work at the contest and defence.

It's just strange to see how far it's dropped off. Bont's more or less a stoppage impact player now, replacing Dunkley in laying 10 tackles a game. But he's not getting 10 inside 50s and goal assists like he used to.

And our forward line on paper is an improvement. We don't have the likes of JJ, Hannan, Vandermeer, Schache, McNeil up forward, where in theory older Weightman, JUH and Lobb is the starting point around Naughton for a better forward unit. Hannan and McNeil are still on the list and don't get games even though there s no reason to think they're fundamentally weaker players than 2021, which shows your how much on paper our forward line is. So it's largely the midfield's ball use quality, in which their kicking skill execution has gone backward rat a rapid rate next to the league across 18 months.

It's not something that can be fixed overnight, but it's something that has to be addressed in selection, list management, development, training this year. Who cares if they re a bit soft, or can't follow instructions or anything. I want a player who knows how to get into space ahead of the ball, and to hit difficult kicks once they get it. And Beveridge and the team to make an emphasis in looking at film vision, training on the park, etc.

That shush deserved a bottle thrown at his head.

Bs, his one mantra when he walked in the door was contested ball. He turned us into contested ball beasts and since then we’ve become so weak, we can’t even stick most tackles
Our current list woes are a different issue entirely.

Can you point to me how many games in 2014 in which we won the contested possession count and clearances?

I dare you to go back and look at the Port PF win in 21 and that will show you how far we've slipped and how quickly. Frightening.

Watched the replay without the beers, we were better than I thought. Had all the momentum in the last, that shepherd on the goal line from that prick umpire 22 who crucified us all night, really was the game changer. We were a massive chance 8pts down 5 mins left. He was same ump who didn't pay the allir holding the ball in front of goal and the 2 shockers v English in the ruck amd the soft in the back against bruce. First time ive questioned an umpires integrity ever.

As for Port, butters is an absolute dog with cheap shots and mouthing off all night closely followed by corn Francis. The karma bus will come back to those 2 later this year.

Enough said on O'Donnell poor kid is being crucified by being seleceted.

I love Brice but that's the worst game of his cacareerhe was missing targets under no pressure by 20m.

Saw hannan kicked 5 in the 2s. Pls no🤦‍♂

It's just like he can't contain his inner d***head.

It’s amazing really. Considering his wife and family’s perilous position, you would think it would just make you a better person overall to be gracious and humble.

Times up suspiciously well with us hiring a guy with no coaching experience as our forward coach.

I don’t think we are far off:

- Bruce had a shocker - was terrible and would expect better but no one in the VFL would likely have played better on Dixon. He won’t play another game like that for years. Actually think he and other players went in without the right stops - slipping around all over the place - just couldn’t keep his feet. Just can’t see TOB or Gardner as a better option.

- VDM was decent but with Richards out you need someone to read the play - Port went smaller and had players running everywhere. Not picking Crozier is a disgrace - just on the 5-10 marks he get is worth it but more about experience and team balance. Max three talls, then Duryea, VDM and Dale.

- Port would have seen us crumble under heat in previous games and we would have known but we don’t seem to be able to increase the heat ourselves in bursts that either halt runs or create them - you could see both Geelong and Port actively increase tackling and are ok to be scrappy because only Libba seems to play better in a scrap.

- Would not be bagging West he did a few things and applied tackle pressure. Love Artie but would have been behind West and Weightman was better. This is not why we lost. West should stay - he has an ability to turn games and a tackler. He must always rotate into midfield to give guys a rest and get him with his hands on the ball. - but also aggressively tackle. He has crazy connection with Darcy and this could be valuable when he come back in.

- SOSOD looks a talent but we are killing him. Let him play a spot in the VFL and learn his trade. Four tall forwards is too slow, makes marking way too congested and not enough tackling pressure. I like Khamis but he has dropped his head after not being picked when he was playing well. This is poor by him because Hannan has shown he drops his level at AFL, where Khamis plays better - but Hannan is kicking goals….we need a third tall but who? Raak doesn’t look ready. Trying SOSOD because nothing else has worked. Bruce they’re would be much better - pushes Naughton up the ground where he can get 10 marks play but still to probably slow. Maybe even play Naughty in the centre square Carey style. When Bonti is resting? Dale could be with JJ and Richards out that is too much of a loss.

- Artie has been good but needs a reset - problem is again….who replaces him. McNeil has been equally ineffective over the last few weeks and so not sure this is better and doesn’t make the tackles. Charlie is certainly not ready. Could we play a defender forward for a few weeks. Crozier (too good to be in VFL) or Duryea? - Someone who will do a job leading or keeping it in. Most of our kicks in were to no-one. Or Daniel was one of our best but did not defend - play him high HFF and effectively another mid. This is what they were trying but when we went forward we were too congested. End result is that Artie probably stays.

- When Naughty was out of sorts and Bruce it would be obvious to swap them for a period to get them in the game - we can do this? It is not a panic but puts pressure on the opposition. I don’t know if any team that has this many talls but doesn’t use them flexibly - Lobb-Naughton-JUH- English-SOSOD-Bruce-Keith-Jones.

- Naughton is being scragged to easily - bomb marks into top of square should go to Lobb/English/ Darcy and get Naughton up the ground and even going back to create an extra tall. Let him free. We also have limited options kicking out from defence and Naughton needs to own that. We have incredible flexibility in players but we don’t use it.

For example - if English is getting beaten in the centre play Lobb more there and move Tim forward to FF (tried this last night but didn’t leave Tim there long enough to work any chemistry) but move Naughton way up the ground. FB will have to change tactics English deep, JUH leading forward and Naughton at 50 on one side and Lobb move to other is and bring KPD like Keath or Bruce into middle for bomb out kicks.

- So for next week would be SOSOD for Crozier.

Back rest to turn it around against North - VDM will be better, Bruce will be better, Keith got whacked and was off for a while but will be much better.

But have to try a few things to cover our inability to handle pressure or to get players like Naughton and Bruce into the game.

So the reasons for the loss aren’t his fault? Again.

My son’s under 12s basketball rep coach takes more responsibility for losses than Bevo. And some of those kids couldn’t kill clock if their life depended on it.

Serong and Brayshaw have him covered in that department, absolute wank the way them two carry on.

Forced myself to watch that around the grounds show with Cornes on AFL.com.au

The whole segment was essentially how good Butters is, zero mention of the controversial overturning of Weightman’s goal.

They did show Port’s transition from full back with 10 seconds to go at the end of the first quarter to score a goal. The free kick against Bruce for in the back was extremely stiff. No doubt we’ve had thing go our way with the umps previously, but the last 2 weeks we’ve certainly been on the receiving end with decisions costing us goals.

Where did I say that? I just said he sounded pissed off. And frustrated

The JoD experiment has to end, especially if he keeps subbing him out….that’s on him

The players missing easy goals…he can’t kick them, that’s on them. We don’t know how they train for that

Opposition fans are in a no win situation. Thoroughly deserves the jeers but if you do you're seen as heartless. Ah well, always another Prelim defeat to look forward to.
