Anyone else done it?

i had to do some community service hours for school and donating blood counts so i did and a felt pretty good about it

id encourage you all to do it..........i got a free milkshake!

You got a milkshake? I just got juice, thats not fair.

I've done it twice and am due on Monday week to do it again. Its worth it just to sit on those chairs they have, they must be some of the comfiest chairs in the world.

Last time I went though they told me to sit in a certain chair until they realised that the whole right side was just covered in splattered blood. Probably not the most comforting to see if you're doing it for the first time.

How long does the process take and how long does it take your body to regenerate the lost blood?

If you make an appointment, and dont have any issues that they need to address, it can be done in an hour easily. Rock in, fill out your questionaire, they test your platelet levels and ask you a few questions, regarding your interview. Once they clear you on that, you go through to the donating room, where they take your blood. That takes anywhere between 4 and 20 mins Im told. Then you go through for your refreshments. I got a sandwich and a milkshake :thumbsu:. Beer was also available last time .

Im no longer allowed to donate because of some condition I have, but if I could, I would. :thumbsu:

I donated blood when I turned 16 (a couple weeks after), did it successfully twice and unsuccessfully once due to being a bit dehydrated (they pricked both my arms but the blood was coming out too slowly). I'm 20 now. I can't donate at the moment as I got a tattoo in January (can't donate for a year after a piercing or tattoo) and also because I'm sick at the moment (got sinus polyps [tumors] and I need an operation in January).

It doesn't hurt that much, just a little sting, and it's for a great cause. Go to the Australian Red Cross website for more information: http://www.donateblood.com.au/

Moreover, if you want, you should sign up for Organ donation too, go to: http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/public/services/aodr/index.jsp

Yeah, I'm already a registered organ donor which I think is a great cause but a lifelong aversion to needles has made me hesitant about giving blood. I was at the doctor's last week for a blood test and it didn't hurt in the slightest, so I've been thinking about doing it.

Am donating on teh 19th.

Was stopped by one of those people in the city so filled out a form and received a call a few days later. Haven't done it before so should be interesting.

Vampire board?:D Nah good stuff....I used to until they banned people who had lived in England in the 80's...they are worried I might have *Mooo*, excuse me- mad cow disease. lol

I'm going again in a couple of weeks, it will be my 63rd donation. They check my blood pressure and iron levels and I get a drink, some bickies, lollies and a bit of time off work. Definitely worthwhile.

I go every 3 months, as I have O- blood (anybody can receive O- blood, thus in high demand). I enjoy it as I get paid time off work, drink a heap of free juice and I enjoy the tingly feeling you get for a few hours after donating.

They only take 500mls and if you had good veins the procedure is faster. My last donation took about 8 minutes.

I recommend everyone do it. And for those who can't because they don't like needles, well find me someone who likes them. :D

There is no way of testing for variant CJD until doing a post portem. The incubation period for CJD can be many decades, hence the reason that any potential carrier cannot donate blood or organs.

Used to do it when I could (too-low haeme once) but haven't been since I got a couple of tatts. I've got about 6 months til I can again so it depends on what I feel like doing first ... giving blood or getting another tattoo. :p
