can preorder on steam now, though ill be waiting a bit. $110 is steep!

when you do, you do get a few days early access (though i can imagine it’ll be a bit not worth it) given that it’s releasing on a thursday/friday

~$110 seems to be the new standard for AAA games
sadly.

with that in mind, ID (or bethesda) do put both doom 2016/doom eternal on deep discounts pretty frequently, eternal's like $17~ at the moment

I need to go back and play Eternal's DLC.

Preferred 2016 though, and from what I've read, Dark Ages will be more like 2016 than Eternal. Pumped.
ancient gods 1 is pretty rough, 2 is solid though

Will wait and see what its like (free hit on game pass!!) nut 2016 and "eternal" were only doom in name for me and didn't capture the spirit of the classic titles.

Not sure if you will like The Dark Ages if that is the case for you, this is a Prequel Chapter of the Doom Saga and as such seems to be a lot more Gothic in nature (terms of the environment/guns and monsters etc)

I am rather excited to see the new monsters and guns they have in store for us.

I firmly believe this will be the best new gen Doom game yet

I actually really appreciate all the Lore and Mythology Bethesda put into Eternal, made me feel I was actively part in some rich and dark universe with fascinating 3 dimensional (if very difficult) villians with meaningful backstory.

That sets it above and beyond most similar First Person Shooters of its time imo

they’ve worked hard to create a story that remains true to what the original games were like. you still do exactly what you did 30 years ago, just with more emphasis on player freedom. less restrictive, more options, more fun.
when 2016 came out i recall a review (or opinion, it’s been about a decade) that “there’s a story happening in the background, but you don’t care” which i don’t quite think is accurate upon replaying the game over the summer holidays.

given the lore/context provided through collectables you can infer that your actions are justified, just not in anyway you can comprehend without that required context

For me I didn't like how you had to play "certain ways" to progress - I know its evolving with the times. But I felt it limiting and that's not fun.

I know many gamers would greatly do without the heavy story elements, but I find it gives the Doom Universe a whole new and enjoyable nuanced texture, especially reading up about the Doom Cultists and those humans who sold Earth/Humanity out and sided with the Aliens/Demons.

And as you say, Eternal has plenty of re-playability if you are one of those nerds obsessed on trying to find almost all the collectables scattered in the levels (toys, albums, cheat codes etc)

I love the fact that Bethesda/ID still keep supporting games of the originals by keep on updating original content/levels (in the past we called them wads) on the original Doom games, and it works fine on the PS5 engine (my one bugbear is you cannot use the Simpsons Doom add on with any other home brewed level/episodes except the original, which is a bit disappointing)
