Dowler has kicked 7 in the last 2 games with his first real chance as key target. A pre-season on the weights combined with better and more frequent delivery should see him as real threat in 2010.

Roughy has shown he can play back and can step in there for a year or 2 while shoey develops, meanwhile we take a KPB with pick 9 and dont miss a beat.

Much better than trading our 1st rounder or one of our young guns for an older back who wont be around in 3 or 4 years anyway.

I'd be onboard with this idea only if we made significant offseason overtures toward a KPD and it didn't pay off. While I've been impressed with Dowler, I heard a stat on MMM this past weekend that since they were drafted, Buddy and Roughy have supplied 43% of our goals. I'm not willing to give up that production lightly.

I agree we do all we can but this is better than getting ripped off in a trade that helps us for a couple of years. We still need someone to play back with Shoey long term.

Remember Roughy can always swing forward if were not kicking goals.

Sod this for a punnet of strawberries! Roughead is acknowledged as the forward leader within the team.

Get Chris Tarrant peoples, and leave the R-Man up forward!

I watched Dowler closely on saturday and he has a long way to go before he can be a key forward. He tiptoes to contested marks. He avoids body contact at all chances. He will need to harden up a lot before he can be anything but a second/third choice lead up forward.

On another note, Riley Milne looked cool and calm under pressure. Potential ++.

this is exactly what should happen with another pre season under his belt dowler will be a good foil for buddy roughhead down back should have happened this year we need help down there and getting an older player from elsewhere will not help long term we need speed in the midfield and help in the ruck this is were we should be looking to draft for roughhead is a natural defender will be great to have him taken to the contest then win the marking duel and start our attacks with 60 metre bombs to buddys chest. Backline with roughead gilham schoey and campbell brown forward line with buddy williams dowler cyril says another premiership to me make it happen clarko

I really hate the idea of Roughead going back these days. Our biggest weapon is that we have 2 of the top 5 key forwards in the competition playing in our team. Why would we take that away? Dowler's last 2 games were promising, but to potentially dismantle our forward line is too big a risk.

Another thing i never understood was this common perception that Jarryd Roughead would be a superstar centre half-back. I know he played pretty well there when he was 18/19, but surely he wouldn't be as good a defender as he is a forward?

The thing is you're going to get alot more out of Rough up forward then you are Dowler. Really don't like the idea of Roughy down back.

Beau can play as the 3rd tall between the other 2 big fellas and pick up the 3rd best defender, that's the way to go with him.

Have to agree, we are just so desperate for a key defender.

Trade for Tarrant.

Franklin-Roughead-Dowler-Williams-Rioli as our forward line next year.

Have to turn Thorp into a defender. He must get over his injuries and get his mobility back. In three years time our defence should read;

Schoenmakers-Thorp-Gilham-Brown-Birchall

Genuine key forwards with the ability to kick 70+ goals a year are like hens teeth... and we have two. I don't think we should be messing too much with that. Throwing Roughie down back on occasion is fine, but we need to develop/trade for other options down back IMO. Dowler showed good signs and kicking a few goals should give him some more confidence next year, but I don't see him as a No. 1 or 2 forward.

roughead narrowly missed out on an AA at CHB in his second season. Sure, he was playing there to help his development (reading the play, as Franklin was used on HFF/Midfield in his first 2 seasons) but in our hour of need it would be benificial to rob peter to pay paul

As for Dowler, he is going to be similar to Williams, good for 2-3 goals per game, but not really integral to the team (Im not saying Williams isnt an integral part of the team, im saying his role isnt integral) as numerous players could fill that position

What? That's definetly not even close to true. If i remember correctly he was even dropped a few times that year.

While I dont like the idea of losing 70 goals a year up forward, we have to work out the net loss / win.

Say Roughead = 70 goals a year

Dowler/ Thorp maybe = 50 goals a year

Loss 20 goals

Murphy (forced to play KPD) concedes 50 goals a year

Roughead concedes 25 goals a year

Win 25 goals

Net Win - 5 goals

Its not as simple as that, and I have no idea how many goals each would concede, but you can see my point.

We probably dont need him down back all the time, but I think if we had of thrown him back more often this year we could have stemmed the bleeding, especially against sides where we struggled under the high ball.

All of this is based on either Thorp or Dowler becoming a genuine forward, and the jury is still out.

It's a shame that Richmond don't have a genuine full back / CHB with 3 or so years left in him. With the clean out going on there, they would be keen as to take some early picks for them.

Play all 3 (Rough, Frankie and Dowler) forward.

Trade (Maguire, Tarrant, one of the Richmond 3, one of the Melbourne 5) or Draft (mature aged like Coad, Markovic etc) for the defender.

I think the only way that Roughy will move back, is if the club decides Barry Hall is the most feasible option.

I can't understand all the man love for Milne??

I watched Hurley absolutely tear him a new one on Saturday.

Might end up a good player, but is several years off for mine.

Agreed with Dowler. He's not there yet, not to say he won't end up a decent player but against Richmond I noticed a lot of push/ hands in the back that went un-noticed.

Always seems like once he kicks a goal he gets his confidence, if he misses he'll stay like that for the rest of the game. Keep Roughie forward, only in the unlikely case of having another experienced forward ( maybe Hall?) should we consider having him in the backline for the majority of the game.

Why rob Peter to pay Paul when you have the money to pay them both?

I say play the 3 talls forward with Osborne and Williams on the flanks and Moss/Rioli at their feet/pinch hitting in the middle.

At the other end there is no doubt we have issues but I would be trading in Maguire as well as doing a Sandilands/Tarrant double from Freo and we will be right as rain......

It is early days for him - second game wasn't it - what do you expect 10 goals and 30 possessions from him?

He didn't play on Hurley the whole time and in normal Hawks fashion they rotate the defenders.

As with the other young guys like Savage, Shiels, Shoey etc they show some good early signs that a good pre-season will go along way towards their development. You probably bagged Clinton Young early on to and look how much we have missed his run and carry!

And give up Buddy or Roughy to do it. I dont think people understand that we arent going to get anyone in a trade this year without giving up way over the odds for it.

Well to be honest if we can't restructure and improve our backline in the summer then we don't really have much choice.

if ever there was a time to try roughy down back for an extended period of time it would have been this year. injuries to croad, boyle, thorp......i thought it was the best option in terms of team balance (as opposed to campbell in the backline, he was needed in the ruck). oh well, i'll concede to the experts on this one, i guess they do not have that view at all.

His decision making was sound and his disposal first class. He is a rookie playing his second game on a big stage.
Hurley is a high first round draft pick who slotted a couple of lucky goals from the boundary(and then some). I stand by my man love, he has potential ++.:thumbsu:
