Haha this thread would be twenty pages long by now.
Guess Richmond smashed the draft doors open!

Made possible because of the volume of quality player exodus with them smashing the door on their way out.

So no surprise Richmond smashed the draft. They held a draft hand better than expansion teams first drafts.

According to the number of each pick, this isn't the case.

Not to shut you down personally, but I find this kind of rush that the AFL media has to declare draft winners and losers to be a bit much.

Nobody knows who 'won' or 'lost' the draft for at least three years, usually seven. For example, on the night of 2009, Melbourne probably looked the "winner" of the draft, having procured Scully, Trengrove, Gysberts and Tapscott in the top 20. Turns out their only hit from that draft was Gawn in the 30s.

I hear what you're saying.

Alger will be the GOAT small forward and the other 7 are 🥔

I think Port and Saints would be pretty happy with what they walked away with. Brisbane were kissed on the pecker by the number of clubs unwilling to make them pay a reasonable price for possibly the best player in the draft and they unexpectantly held a 3rd after matching their first 2 players so that's a big tick.
I know most WC fans are very happy with what we ended up with weather through good luck or good management or a bit of both. But with the potential this young crop come with plus retaining 2x F1 and 2xF2 + F3 for next year, this could really set us up to bounce back quicker than most thought possible.

North- well, lets see how Whitlock pans out but I don't think many Roos fans were floating on air after night 1.

Winners
Tigs - That hand + a future North First and to get a good talent SF at 58
Lions/Bears - Oh My. 3 picks in 40s for the standout no1 player. + Another first FS
Eagles - Got bargains/good talent at every spot.
Port- added forward firepower

Up and Down
Saints- didn’t like their early picks where they picked 3 of the same medium defender. Loved their last 3 picks where they got a good mid and highly rated ruck that slipped.
North- FOS will be such a good pick for them and add a lot of firepower to their forward line. Betting heavily on jumping up the ladder this year. It will be a big price to pay if they’ve got it wrong

Losers
Collingwood - Got a player they may not have wanted when Sydney didn’t match their bid
Freo- Murphy Reid’s Hostage Video is troubling
Fox Draft Guy who doubled down on Essendon’s trade of pick 9 being a mistake

The system won yet again.

The best kid in the draft cost 3 picks in the 40s.
Would have cost more if clubs had the balls to call his name out earlier, along with Lombard.
Understand the club with pick 1 choosing a player they can actually have but after that if there is a clear standout he should be picked.

Had to laugh at Collingwood, called Sydneys bluff with big stupid grins on their faces only to end up with egg instead.
That final shot of Fly gave it away, looked more dejected than the 'free at the G' incident.

Just remember everyone, Richmond had the best draft haul in 2004 too...
Bit of a different time back then. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/tigers-axe-recruiting-manager-20040827-gdyj5h.html

"The cash-conscious Tigers plan to go into 2004 without a recruiting manager - the position having been made redundant"

Not sure our recruiting team was in the best state if we couldn't even afford to keep someone in the position.

2006 we brought in Francis Jackson and in that draft we had pick #8 but wanted Jack Rewioldt who was ranked lower so we traded #8 for #13 and Polak and picked up Jack and then Shane Edwards at #26.
2007: Backed it up by picking Cotch at #3 and Rance at #18.
2008: Vickery at #8 kinda a miss, but he was decent and got us the pick we used for Bolton which then got us 3 picks this draft.
2009: Dusty at #3, Astbury at #35 and Grimes in the pre-season draft.

So yeh, different times. We've been good to very good in drafting since Francis Jackson came on board.

It's not a stretch to say Richmond need to be the winners and by a long way in this draft. Coming off a two win season and then culling any remaining players with reasonable value - if they have more misses than hits then an already ugly predicament is only going to get a whole lot worse. You'd be crossing everything if you were a Tiggie hoping you picked the right ones.
