I do agree with your argument about patriarchal views about women, but then you went on to say she was essentially born into the job.

That doesn't do much for her credibility either. As opposed to someone who earned their place, instead of asking Daddy for a job.

Plus if a woman (or man) want to sleep their way to success, good luck to them! I wish I could apply for jobs with my looks.
By "born in to the job", I mean it was in her blood. Her Dad had been a foreign correspondent. Her brother was in it. She was drawn to it from her ties to them. She wouldn't have got as far as she did (or for as long) if she wasn't considered any good. She is pretty knowledgeable about rugby league - I think that was her forte. She wouldn't be the first to comment on things they know nothing about... Michaelangelo Rucci springs to mind.

Oh absolutely.

I work in an industry where a lot of people are given jobs through connections rather than skill and merit. People get into positions of power just because they know someone. And it's amazing how many people then continue to be terrible at their jobs. Only there because they know someone. I have no doubt she got help becoming a journo due to family ties.

It only gets you so far though. If you are truly crap, you don't last long. Perhaps longer than most would like...

She is pretty crap though, and so far has lasted.

I totally support the thing you said about how people go after the "who is she sleeping with" if a woman has a successful career. Some of the same men go after Caro W - instead of commenting on her views etc it is totally "burn the witch" stuff and worse that I am not even prepared to write here.

For me, I will make a statement that can hopefully can be viewed as the passionate supporter of gender equality that I believe I am. Woman or man, I truly think she is an appalling and embarrassing journalist and I have no idea how newspapers can find it in themselves to disrespect their clients by serving up these non-talents week after week.

Wtf - I get it. You're in the shadow cabinet in Victoria. It all comes together :)

Have you READ the newspapers lately? o_O A quick glance throughout their seedy pages will show them as the irrelevant dinosaurs they have become. Journalism was once seen as a noble career. These days it's become no different to the poor excuse that is women's magazines. Headline grabs with little to no substance (or accuracy). And honestly, Robbo as chief football writer for the Hun and Rucci for the Advertiser is indicative to the levels to which it has plunged.

I love how you slander journalism's nobility based on the failing of Australia's print media. Journalism is still noble if you look to alternative sources (read non-Murdoch).

Totally. Journalism is dying, good sports journalism virtually dead.

Not unrelated - I used to feel Robbo was more pissed on Monday nights then other nights. Tonight he seemed slightly more sober. Strange.

There are some sensational sports writers still in NYT. I don't think Australian print media cuts it, regardless of funding source

Sorry, I should have said - print journalism in this country.

I used to work in a press room... with some of the Nations best and brightest investigative and national affairs journos. Those were the days!

Old people shout at cloud moment huh? I hear you. On that note I am distangling the wrestling cats and going to bed :)
