Marty Clarke..how is he going this preseason, is he likely to play R1? Worthy pickup?

If not, who else is there for the a similar price or lower?

Bower could take Duigan's spot at the start of the year, assuming that Duigan struggles to be fit for R1. He would play 3rd tall back (where he always should have played) and offers a bit as a rebounding defender.

He's also versatile enough to play on a wing or even switching into the forward line. I can see him being used as a tall utility.

I'm not saying he's a lock, but he's certainly one to keep an eye on, because he does have the potential to play most of the season and average in the 70-80 range. NAB cup will help to work out what his role is likely to be.

Carlton's back line as I see it:

Definite:
Jamo (FB)
Hendo (CHB)
Laidler

Likely:
Duigan - may get squeezed out
Bower - may squeeze in
Tuohy - killing it this PS
Russell - could also feature in MID rotations
Joseph - lockdown back pocket
Yarran - may play more wing/FWD this year?

What's wrong with Carrazzo?

He only had 3-4 games under 80 last year, couple of big games as well.
I know he is prone to a shutdown roll, but he still managers to rack up the possies, i reckon he could be a bit of a chance this year.

Aren't Armfield & Joseph their main taggers, with Robinson thrown in for specific jobs?

Anyone else concerned about Deledios interrupted preseason now missing a few weeks.

In a tough bye round and plenty to choose from if you only want a couple premiums missing from that round.

Yeah i am a bit, i guess we have to wait and see how he pulls up, but trading him out wouldn't be the worst idea, especially if you have Goddard and Birchall/Suckling in your side, to avoid a 0 in the round 13 bye.

Marty Clarke is anything but best 21 so any injury doesnt read well. The only thing going his way is injuries to the side. Didak, B.Johnson and Krakouer (family reasons) all will miss a few weeks leading into the home and away season.

I have my doubts on picking him personally.

As for Deledio, from what i know had done a full preseason and done all the major high intensity cardio stuff which is done in November, December and January. Come February teams start to focus more on strategy and structures ala a lot less running. Its only a minor hamstring so hes going to miss very little work and even the work he misses wont be benefiting him to much other than knowing structure/strategies. Had he missed 3 weeks out the start of December lead into the xmas break (2 weeks) than that would make me worried seeing him miss 5 weeks of preseason in a row.

I think hes the outright second best valued premium from the R13 bye.

he's clearly best 21

he is the perfect replacement for davis who else besides shaw has the elite kicking that clarke does?

and now that figjam's in charge he places a big emphasis on kicking which is something clarke has plenty of

and plus he was training quite well

Missing a few weeks? Huh?

He's already back in main training. Won't play NAB 1 though just as precautionary reasons most likely but probably will play week 2, 3 and 4.

Magpies starting backline could well be

Toovey - Tarrant - Maxwell

Shaw - Reid - Harry O

Next in line you even have Goldsack and B.Johnson (who is currently injured who can play comfortably in defense). Marty clarke is competing with about 10 players for 6 spots. Clearly he isnt best 21 and isnt the actual replacement for Davis, your overrating his kicking. A guy called Seedsman could well be close to him aswell, might be a different name but i think hes the one. They may opt to use N.Brown as a full back and play tarrant on small players like Porpz, Lecras, Gia.

I kinda figured Clarke would be used in the Nicoski role - play up forward in an attacking way, but be one of the main appliers of pressure.

I don't know 100% how his kicking is, but from what i remember 50odd metres wasn't beyond him.

Every AFL player these days can kick 50m when fit and healthy.

I thought he was training with the backs? not sure but thats what was getting from the pies.

As a forward he could be used their with Didak and Krakouer out. However they could/should be right for round 1. They also have plenty of other options, will play 3 tall forwards, two rotating midfielders like Beams and Sidey than the other spot is up for grabs which could well be Clarke. Macaffer Didak and Krak are his biggest threats.

Is it just me or does there appear (pre-NAB) a decent amount of good rookies in the backs this year? I'm feeling pretty confident in selectin 2/3 to start and stocking up elsewhere.

Guys like;
Ellis and Morris from Richmond along with Sierkowski, Brown (adel), Smedts, Docherty, Clarke, Spurr, Mohr, Bugg, Buntine, Darley even Wilkes and Talia should get games.

Seems a decent mix of early recruits and some downgrade targets mixed in.

Very tempting to skimp on the defence to chock up the forwards.

Yeah for sure seems the strongest rookie area this year. However i think may of those players will become risky eg: they wont really be a Heppell/Duigan. Ellis is probably going to be up there with those 2 but the rest all are fringe type players without seeing enough of them or seeing them in the NAB.

Sierakowski is interesting, the roos needed good HBF's and he was an emergency many times in a stronger hawthorn team last year. So with that he will be very close to a half back flank in roos best side. However they have opted to draft Mckenzie a HBF and also use Atley as a more rebounding defender so who gets the 2 spots is up for grabs. They also have Sam Wright and im not sure what position he has been training with in PS at North. Macmahon should player closer to goal.

Spurr has alot of similar types to contend with and didn't impress in the intra club, whoever a few early games can sometimes go like that. Ibbo, Mcphee, Suban, Broughton and Duffield is some tough competition and hes not even on the primary list yet Menagola ect might be hard to get pass.

All those GWS recruits will get games rotated in and out. Unsure of Mohr and Hombasch coring ability they probably have the better JS. However i prefer the scoring looks from Buntine, Darley, Bugg ect however i think they will be rotated more heavily and have less JS.

Clarke as i mentioned isnt a lock best 21 like many think. Injuries may save him early. Docherty has had many problems with his hips throughout preseason. Will ask in house about him and whether he will play.

I like Carrazzo too, could be a nice point of difference. Reading stuff on the Carlton board suggests he is borderline 22 every week but Ratten loves him so can't see him being left out.

I guess he is a bit overpriced for mine and is more an upgrade target.

i still think shaw will play further up the ground so he could easily take his spot and im just as happy not to pay the extra the money for clarke and save by getting wilkes, darley or hine for example so dont really care either way to be honest

Fair enough, just showing that he has a lot of competition and could well be sitting 10th for a 6 man back line role. So he certainly isn't a clear lock. Injuries are helping his cause.

How do you think Hine (dont know?), Darley and Wilkes will score? What are you expecting from those 3 individuals BORRAT?

Hine is not the best option, Wilkes may play a bit but won't score well. Darley is a great player and should play at least half of the year and score quite well, he is a gun. Go with Darley. Other good cheap defenders are Rory Ellis, Marty Clarke, Luke Brown.

According to intra club game today, Carrazzo played a great game and is definitely in the best 22.

Also to note Scotland was also dominant in todays intraclub.
