I think that definitely big footy has a lot of misleading information regarding dream team. But I would suggest it cops more than it should. Look at Team Director's starting squad last year, almost identical to the big footy hype squad. Of course the trading seperates the boys from the men but I think that valuable information is discussed in the lead up to the season :thumbsu:

How would you rate these mid forwards? They all look OK to me.

289 Medhurst
286 Ziebell
281 Hall
278 Reimers
234 Warren
232 Dangerfield
221 Mayne

Interesting article today on AFL.com where they asked Chad Cornes a number of DT related questions. When asked who in his opinion was primed for a big DT season he said Nick Salter as he had not only had a great pre-season but he was going to be playing a sweeping roll across half back this year meaning he would be getting alot more 'cheap' possesions.

I will certainly be watching Salters progress alot more closely in the pre-season.

He would have to fight with Chad himself for those cheap possessions in the backline.

in order and reasons

1) medhurst - proven 85 average player, having a great pre season, in a very good side
2) Dangerfield - priced well below his true value which I think is around 75
3) Ziebell - priced at 70 will average 70
4) Reimers - could be number 1 if he was assured more game time, one to watch
5) warren - anything could happen but more question marks than the other 4
6) mayne - would love him at the blues but dt wise he doesn't get enough of it, tough as nails though.

here is a question for people. travis varcoe? anyone considering him? i am

With Ball coming into the Collingwood midfield and guys like Sidebottom and Beams probably playing more time and games I can't see Medhurst roaming in the midfield as much as in 2008. I picked him from the start of that year after getting the sense from pre-season comments from him that he will play more midfield. I think that Didak will probably be more likely to appear up the ground than him, so (in my humble opinion) that there are better options.

Isn't Ziebell priced at 65 ? I'll be surprised if he doesn't average around 75, but is that enough ?

I don't quite buy all the Dangerfield love. Every man and his dog has him, which is one reason I won't be, but having closely looked at his scoring I'm not convinced he's a great DTer and I'm not convinced he'll average over 65. Of course, I could be wrong and he may have his 'break-out' year.

Medhurst has only ever had one decent scoring year in 8. I agree that if he replicates his 2008 he'll be a fantastic acquisition. And all reports suggest that he's on track to do so.

Varcoe doesn't do much for me. He may get going, but he scored 75 or more in only 5 of 22 games last year. He's too much of a flaky choice for mine.

Justin Westoff has averaged 89 points over the first two matches of the NAB cup, and is priced at 64. Coming into his fourth year with 50 games of experience, could provide a good alternative to Ziebell, Medhurst and Hall.

That average is skewed by a 106 in a game where Brogan didn't play. I didn't watch the game so am only guessing when I say that he probably spent most of his time in the ruck and therefore picked up a lot more possessions around the ground as a result. He scored a 72 iirc against Adelaide which is still a good score.

I suppose it just depends on what his role is when he doesn't play in the ruck.

I don't think he was playing the ruck, just roaming up the ground. If he's not playing as a KPF he'll probably score well, but I think he'll have to for most of the season as Port are a bit lacking in that area.

What? Since when does Justin Westhoff play in the ruck? I thought that was Matthew Westhoff.

Cloke and Lobbe were the main ruckmen last night, though Westhoff did take a couple of centre bounces (only got one hit out though, Port got beaten in the hit-outs 41-10). He took seven marks roaming up the field and had a big third quarter (45 points).

It's something Port have been experimenting with during the pre-season, wanting to use Justin as a mobile forward/ruckman.

Don't know a whole lot about Matthew Westhoff, but he has 0 hit-outs in six AFL games, so I'd say at AFL level they play him purely as a key forward.

Either way he looks to provide good value at his price, but as hamole said, he will probably have to play deep in the forward line come season proper.

Could be worth a punt though as his NAB performances suggest he can score big if given some freedom up the ground.

If he's playing up the ground without Motlop or Tredders in the side, I don't see why he'd be playing deep while they're playing.

Interested to hear people's thoughts on Ballantyne. He was talked up a lot last year, but the early season injury, lead to him performing a lot lower than people expected, but it also means he is priced quite low at a 54.3 average, and I belive he is better than that. He is IMO easily Best 22 and besides his wrist injury last year, has had no other injury concerns in juniors (As far as I know). So, he should play 22 unless something happens.

He was drafted as a mature age recruit and will turn 23 this year. He kicked 75 goals in the WAFL in 2008, to finish second on the goal kicking. He will also find the Fremantle forward line a lot easier this year with Pavlich and Mayne returning, which will mean he will a lot of the attention will go to them, especially Pavlich.

He also has, as far as I know, had an uninterupted preseason, and is performing very well in the NAB. He scored a 79 against Melbourne and is on 68 at half time against North Melbourne. In these games he has also demonstrated his ball winning ability and the lack of need for him to kick lots of goals to score big. He kicked 2 goals, but had 18 disposals for his 79 against Melbourne and has had 10 disposals and 1 goal for his 68 so far against 68.

The problem for him has to be how high he will score. 6 out of 8 scores under 62 has to ring alarm bell, but I believe a big part of that was his injury and I think this preseason has showed that he can score well. He also had last year a healthy kick to hand ball ratio of 2.7 : 1, which is always good.

Anyway, he is just another cheap forward, who has to be watched in this NAB and see how he is going. IMO he would only need to average 75 to make 100 grand and be a good cash cow, the question is whether he can average 75.

I'll have Ballantyne in my DT this year, his cheap as chips. I believe 79DT points against Essendon at Subiaco and today a nice 97DT against the Kangaroos. I know it's the NAB cup but I'm confident in him avg at least 70-75 a game.

Certainly looks fit and covered a lot more ground today than he did in any game last year. Got touches up at HB all the way through to FF.
