Going over the tape of the game a bit. Am I the only one becoming increasingly embarrassed by Dwayno's deteriorating standards of commentary?

Did he always pull out such shockers as?

"It brings a tear to the eye" - David Rodan's goal
"It's like hot apple pie" - Tredrea's goal

The guy has taken footy commentary to an all-time low, especially it would seem when raving us up. He needs to put some perspective and calmness back into his calling.

Footy commentary at most levels is at an all-time low IMO, but Dwayne is the most embarrassing and as a Port bloke, I can't handle that at the moment.

I haven't seen last night game yet on the box, but I have always thought the Raging Bull was one of the better commentators.

One of the few, I'm sure.

Has me wanting to pull out my hair most of the time - goes way over the top with players he likes, and rarely gives the lesser knowns the credit they deserve when they do something good (plus, seems to have an anti-Carlton bias).

I've always considered Dwayne Russell to be very tolerant of the clubs (all 14 of them) he dislikes. I think he does extremely well not to vomit everywhere when he has to give credit where it's due.

You can visibly see his skin crawling and he does a good job not to acknowledge it :thumbsu:

I used to like him, but these days I can't stand his default calling style: "Carlile. Stewart. Pearce. Rodan. Westhoff. Rodan. Salopek."

Dwayne, it's television.

I said on Macca's match report thread that one of the many things that drove me crazy about last night's game was Russell's call and Frawley's stupidity.

These guys are clearly bored - if they are not on TV, they are on the radio - and jaded as hell. Russell turns ordinary moments into once into a lifetime events. However, as bad as he has become, he has not fallen as far as some others. I can't watch the Winners - is he dosed up on Botox or something?

McAvaney is now clearly the worst on TV. Insert choice of following:
"I just feel right now"
"I just think"
"I've just got a hunch"
"Don't you think?"
"Doesn't it seem?"

These things should be left to the color commentators - play by play guys should assist the viewer by calling what they see, or happens off the screen, not what they see or think they see in their teacup. Of course, most of the color guys are brainless too, Buckley, Tim Watson excepted. Bucks at least likes the game, understands it and conveys that. The Frawleys of the world just read the stats off the screen and rave. Blight is quirky, but gives you some insights into a coach's mind, Voss is good because he's straight, while poor old Danny Frawley doesn't have the concentration to watch a game, let alone coach one.

His claim yesterday that Reiwoldt's attempt on goal, "though not important of the context of today's game, could have a big bearing on things next week" was a classic piece of Bruce drivel.

Quartermain is just a plain dud. Tim Lane and Denis Commetti have gone downhill in their atempts to entertain rather than inform. Anthony Hudson is irritating, but the best of the lot these days. The FOX crew is rubbish, though Jakovich does point out a few things of value. Don't get me started on Robert Walls, the biggest narcissist hypocrite that ever graced our TV.

Can't wait for an 18 team comp so we can hear more of them! AFL football has become boring and most of these media clowns add to that ennui.

Minus the skycam (I still have to laugh about that thing), Channel 9 had a good thing going, and damn it all, we don't get to hear them anymore.

Also, RIP Clinton Grybas.

Yeah, I hate Channel 7.

Not only is their coverage amateur hour but they took the rights from what was next level Channel 9 coverage and we lost Fox Footy Channel to boot.

I'll say this once, once only.. Might even write it down on a piece of paper and pass it under the table, then ask you to destroy it..

... I actually didn't mind Eddie's commentary

Yeah, he was dreadfully flat whenever Collingwood were losing - but that was part of the entertainment, hearing him bleed.

Otherwise he was colourful, descriptive and his chemistry with the likes of Derm, Lyon and Den was obvious.

Now we've got Den trying way too hard to rekindle those halcyon days surrounded by spuds like Bruce (in the 5 year absence he has dropped off markedly), Watson (boring) and Schwarz (just daft).

Bucks is a real breath of fresh air but he's stifled by the other two.

Yes!! Gary Lyon!!

Miss his comments, absolutely. Those 3 bouncing off each other was great. Lyon is wasted not calling games at the moment. His transition into the media has been seamless.

They were a footy fan's commentary team- enough jargon for the enthusiast, enough dumb-talk for the casual fan, enough jokes to be entertaining.. And certainly no mention of 'Leigh Brown being crucial to that team' (Mr. Healy... take notes!)

(By the way, saying Brown is crucial to the Roos is like saying Lonie is crucial to Port. FFS I hate these muppets).

What's killing Dennis C is when he drops a WWE reference nobody in the box knows WTF he's talking about. Dermie used to arc up and run with any reference to Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, The Undertaker etc.

As for Dwayne, he's trying hard. Can't knock him, he still loves us.

ease up mate, i think youre the one that's in need of clamness & perspective. i've seen/heard dwayne call other non port games & he's just the same.

comments referring to motlop's deep bag of tricks, burgoyne pulling something from the top shelf etc is all great, worthy stuff & i enjoy the fact that, with such a wide audience, he is still proudly a port man.

we need support in those circles - how many times has dwayne stuck up for the club during the heritage round fiascos? he sets a lot of people straight when it comes to inaccuracies with regards to our club.

always been a fan of the powerhouse no.4. :thumbsu:

Fair enough Skip - always entitled to your opinion.

I'm grateful for the support Dwayne gives our club. I do however, think that his level of commentary was much more composed and balanced during his channel 9 days.

Still don't understand the analogy of a goal on the run to hot apple pie.:)

Yes you're right, old Dwayno has lost the plot on air and might need to find a new vocation.

As for the other, even the ones who were once good have deteriorated in quality. Buckley has been a stand out...it's his first year.
