I have noticed a few negative threads about Dylan Smith over the past couple of months.
l however believe he will become a great Roos leader. He might not be the quickest player over 30 or 40 metres, nor have the longest kick, but this kid has got some ticker. He definately knows how to get the hard ball, is football smart, can take a strong mark for his size, and is not as bad a kick as some say. Dylan was superb during a training drill on Friday. Smothered, tackled hard, and won the ball from the opposition a few times. ln a pack situation he has surprisingly good burst of speed.
His problem to me seems to be that he puts so much preasure on himself, his always aiming for profection. l always notice him slapping his side and talking to himself. He is always going at a 120%. l believe this often can have a reverse effect on your skills.
He needs to get a little more balance in his approach to training. Give his mind a rest occassionally.
Dylan and harro would be great interchanging together this year.
They are both very simular players(in and under) and would make an awesome combination. l don't believe Harro has the endurance to play out a game quiet yet.

I like Dylan, but IMO he has a long way to go before he can be a regular contributor at AFL level, and also has a few blokes in front of him for that onball spot he is obviously best suited to.

I agree that he does seem to put a heap of pressure on hbimself, and almost seems too keen to impress the coaching staff with his doubtless work ethic and training efforts.

I've said it before, but he always seems to makes things look a bit harder than the rest of the group. He just naturally has a dishevelled look about him and a slightly awkward running style.

But on the positive, i saw him play some really good games at MK level last year and he seems to have lots to offer when he can find that extra % to take the next step. Very courageous, hard at it and is very good in close. Great footy brain and very mature. But appearance wise, he just seems to be still very much be a boy in a man's game though.

Compare that to Harris who has really filled out and looks a million dollars. But then so did Brady Anderson compared to Peter Bell....

I hope you are not suggesting that harris will be like brady anderson.;)

I think Dylan will be good, but as you have suggested Carlos will develop slowly as did Peter Bell.

Harris, has always impressed me with his quick hands. His game in the opening round against Essendon 2001 (??) when we got beaten quite easily in the end was very impressive, especially in the way that he was able to mix in the packs against players far bigger than himself.

But then our former coach went and played him the reserves for the rest of the season, instead of playing him in the seniors and letting him learn the caper.

I am hoping that Harris will be very much in the mould of a Williams/Ratten type player who can dish off to our quick and silky midfielders ... :D d. wells, m stevens, b harvey ....

Howdy Ladies and Gentlemen.
Cam Crognale thats all fair enough the points that you have mentioned.....but there is also the point of being a good trainer and not taking it onto the field.
There have been many players who are pretty good at training and can use there skills nicely, but when it comes to playing a real game of Footy they go missing....eg:Shannon Watt, Brady Rawlings, Shannon Motlop, Stuart Cochrane, Shannon Grant.
I have been in that situation plenty of times where i have trained like an absolute star and then played like Randall Bone!!!

Where as in Brent Harvey, Anthony Stevens, Wayne Carey, Glen Archer, Adam Simpson etc etc etc all train good, and then play good come the weekend, so i think our little Dylan boy has got a lot more to prove before he starts winning fans.

I'd hardly say Bell developed slowly, played in a flag at 19 yo!

how well did he play in the GF? And didn't he subsequently say that he thought he was going to be dropped given how he had played in the PF?

BTW, he was 20. ;) (DOB. 1 March 1976)

Yes he did say that. But he still played something like 21 games in a gun team that year as a forward pocket and by 97's end was already a competent onballer. So at 21 he had amassed 40+ games, played in 2 different roles and was a senior fixture. I wouldn't call him a late bloomer!

I must admit I thought he was older than 20 when he played in 1996, as he had been cut by Freo.

My impression of his career is that of a steady increase in his output as an AFL player until he reached a level where he was a regarded as a top shelf midfielder, unlike say a Judd who has burst onto the scene in his first year.

Why I compare Smith to Bell, is that Smith seems to have the inner drive and persistence that Bell has. Or am I just hoping that the draft picks that we got for Bell don't go to waste?;)

Personally, I don't think Carlos will develop at all. He's a dud, who should be delisted...

You know, I held the lingering impression that Bell played an average GF in 1996, but watching the replay recently, I looked out for him, and whilst he didn't get all that much game time, and was no where near as productive as he was later in his career with us, he didn't do too bad when he was involved in the passage of play. Some of that cleverness he later displayed was evident then.. Put it this way, I don't think he played badly.

Actually for the amount of game time that he had, Belly played well. He also kicked that goal that Dunkley completely missed and all the Sydney players dropped their heads. Worth a vote for that alone.:D

The kid has talent, but l think he needs a new pair of boots, he struggles to keep his feet, always seems to be falling when kicking. With maturity will come the balance, but until he gets that, he will struggle at the top level.

Dylan has a long way to go but he should get his chances this year under JYD.
I'm not overly impressed by him at this stage.
I mean if he wants an onball role then he will have to measure up to Stevo, Harvey and Simpson.
That's a tough ask but most teams do have quality onballers so if he isn't up to it then he will get killed.
I'd give Harris a go before Smith but in reality they must be tried a few times to see who has got the goods.
Dylan must produce the goods this year as must a few others.

i think that has a lot to do with trying to impress pagan by kicking the ball when the best and most effective way of disposing of the ball would be handballing it. pagan always seemed to be allergic to the idea of handballing the ball out for some reason, both harris and smith really were murdered by that stupid tactic...
