Eade sacked...sad sad day

Im disappointed. I really like Eade, and I think he was the right man for the job.

Now it has happened though, I suppose we all have to start wondering who our coach will be. I think we should go down the same path as Geelong did, and appoint someone not familiar with the list, club, etc.

Agree with this.

We need someone who has worked at Coll or Geelong in the past few years.

Best decision we could make. Pehaps if Rodney had his mind 100% on coaching this year things may have been different. Someone used the word professional in this thread. Maybe in the past. Not this Year. Too distracted by outside influences Rocket. You only have yourself to blame. Thanks for your efforts. Goodbye and good luck.

That's a ridiculous comment. What outside influences?

I am greatly saddened and angered with finding out the news. In my 34 years as a Bulldogs member Rodney Eade has been by far my favourite coach. I will never forget the great kindness he showed toward me during my last three visits. I'm glad I got to say goodbye to him at the last training session I attended in April. I had been hoping to see him again at the start of next season.

He took us to three PF in a row, something that as a member in the late 70s/early80s I never would have dreamt possible. We own him much.

I hope that if he ever again wears the Chicago Cubs cap I gave him last year, that he knows that he will always have a fan and admirer on this side of the world.

Thanks, Rodney.:thumbsu: This is one footy fan that will never forget you.

Feel a bit sad, but also a bit glad.

Eade has been good for us, but the cold, hard facts are that in the 7 years he coached us, the best we could ever manage was THIRD.

He has had a very poor year - missing the finals when the expectation was a Grand Final appearance. People can blame the players til they are blue in the face, but the blame has always, and will always be on the coach. Rocket also does not seem to be able to motivate the required desperation into the team (to all bar Dahlhaus that is).

To provide context in terms of past coaches, I would argue that Wallace gave a better result in that we were the SECOND best team in both 1997 and 1998. The club is in a better place now than we were then, so don't despair!

So IMO, 7 years is long enough. Had he delivered a premiership during that time, then keep him on as the runs are on the board.

He didn't though.

BTW, the club hasn't actually SACKED him, they have simply decided they aren't offering a contract extension.

Eade threw down the gauntlet to management early in the week. This decision has now allowed him to get on and continue coaching at another club. He probably saw it coming with the Barry Hall comment on the weekend.

If the news conf can spin it that it's best for all concerned to do the deal at this point in time, damage will be minimised. What's known as win-win situation.

I'm not sure who can fill his boots, but with Fantasia in control of the footy dept, it really wouldn't matter. His handling of Lake and Cooney has been amateurish, at best. Eade could only work with players presented to him by Fantasia.

If Malthouse gets the gig, you'll see massive change. If someone else gets it, Groundhog Day here we come.

Very disappointing.

Fact is, doesn't matter who coaches us, if we don't have the resources, it is going to be extremely difficult to achieve what we would all like. Rodney has done a great job with what he has had to work with. We are probably going backwards now.

Not sure Smorgan's passion is enough to be honest.

Just said in his press conference another couple of new players are gonna play this weekend. Hi Tutt and Cordy.

Listening to Hutchy's stupid questions makes me sad.

Footy department wasn't such a big thing back then. Footy in the mid 90s was only semi professional. You didn't need to pump money into your footy department to have a chance of being successful.

Eade shits on Wallace as a coach.

No he doesn't.

Both coaches got us close to a Grand Final once, and both coaches took us on when we were pretty rubbish.

I would actually say that Wallace picked up the team when we were in a weaker position - given when Eade came we had just drafted Cooney, Griffen (and Ray).

I Feel sorry for Rocket.
He will have to go down as the best or 2nd best Coach Bulldogs have ever had. They have been ultra competitive for the last 5 years. 3 prelims in a row and his first real poor season in relation to the “future” pathway of the club and he gets axed. Not to mention the ever growing injury list and lack of form by Senior guys like Higgins, Cooney, Lake, Gilbee, Hall and Cross. As Aker stated in his article, Eade took Bulldogs to 3 prelims in a row with arguably the worst resources in the AFL. I don’t know if I am wrong or right but I have a feeling maybe the reason the Dogs are on the decline this year is due to their reliance on their speed and fitness, while these names above are getting older they might be coming back to the pack in those terms, thus having to rely on pure football ability like the Cats but can’t manage it to AFL standard. I think they need to move on Eade now! Why would you have a coach coach the side for 3 games when he will not be there next year? Pointless.

Who will dogs get now?

The club think Eade is not man for the club going forward and make no mistake the players have stopped listening to him.
He is the only experienced coach that DID NOT adapted to the current game and forward presses quickly. While also he has been regularly out coached on game day this year.

as they said "we need to refresh........not rebuild"
well put. :thumbsu:

Wallace was good, but Eade was way better. Wallace showed he wasn't able to maintain consistent performances as the professionalism of the sport developed. In '97, as mentioned previously, Aussie Rules was only semi professional. There weren't more financially strong clubs pumping thousands into their footy department. As soon as the turn of the century happened, Aussie Rules was fully professional and clubs started invested thousands beyond thousands in their resources. It wasn't Wallace's fault, but on paper in 2000-2002 we still had a strong list on paper, and we should have played finals in each of those years. Had we been more financially secure, we would have been well up there with the likes of Brisbane, Essendon and Collingwood.

When Eade took over, our footy department was still low, but his coaching brilliance allowed us to play in three consecutive Prelim Finals. Imagine if we had the expenditure of clubs like Collingwood, Geelong, West Coast, Brisbane, etc. West Coast were down and out last year, but look how quickly they have bounced back. Brisbane will do the same.

Eade deserves a lot more credit then he gets.

Rocket tried to have a game plan that would beat the press, not simply change to it like most other clubs have. It didn't work but thinking of the last three years we have lost to innovators of a game plan not teams that simply follow what other successful sides have done. I believe we need to be a side that creates a game plan that other sides need to try and copy us, or take a risk and create something that will beat that game plan.
Whether that would have been Rocket or not I have no idea on the inner workings of the club and his relationships within the club.

In the space of a fortnight two coaches got the chop.
I know why they were both sacked... They have little to no hair. You have to grow follicles to be a successful coach these days Roos, Worsefold, Thompson, Clarkson, Malthouse et al.

Seriously it is a bad day for you football club. Were cruelled with injuries throughout the year which was punctuated with Morris on Saturday Night. There is no way that Rocket Eade had anything to with it.

You club has my sympathy and empathy today. I hope you find a coach worthy enough to fill Rodney's shoes. I also hope that you end the current biggest premiership drought real soon.

Good luck with finding a new coach and hopefully we will see you club salute on Grand Final Day.

All this talk of football department funding is jump passing the buck. Look at the premier league where teams like Sunderland constantly spend big dollars and still end up mid table with clubs who spend less. It's about excellence and doing the best with what you have. Fact is this year we have been a rabble. The players have showed very low intensity and have been inconsistent with effort. Someone has to be held accountable. It's big business. He was a great coach for us but it's time for someone to clean up the diabolical mess we're in.

What Smorgon said deeply concerns me "we dont need to rebuild we need to refresh". This is so very wrong, our old players are coming to an end and we are devoid of good 23-27 year old players. WE MUST REBUILD

If Smorgon really thinks we can keep challenging these next few years and remain moderately successful by getting top 8 finishes then he must go because it will prolong our drought.
