Geelong with pick 34 - Connor MacDonald (Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country)
Midfielder, 184cm, 77kg

A ball-winner inside midfielder who produces week in week out at stoppages. What does that look like? He a
veraged nearly 30 disposals, 14 contested possessions and 5.5 clearances in the 4 NAB Cup matches and was the leading possession winner for Vic Country in their second trial game. He has a great work rate and can play burst away from stoppages as well as deliver the defensive pressure work when playing inside mid.

He shows great decision making at stoppages, uses his long hand passes to create space and options as well as shorter flick out passes. His kicking is acceptable (accuracy OK but occasionally blazes away), time in development will improve his kicking efficiency as the basics are there and he learns to take more time kicking which will come. He might be trying too hard as he has a lovely long kick and is sometimes too keen to show it off. One of his strongest attributes is his tackling. Like a dog with a bone, he refuses to let go in his tackling and as he develops greater upper body strength as all draftees do, this will only get more ferocious.

In the interviews, a couple of recruiters have made reference to his character in interviews, not easy when living in a COVID world.

With Selwood, Dangerfield and getting on in years, the Cats needed to address this as a priority.

Knifey Spoony - you are up for the Crows pick

Pick 35 - Adelaide Football Club select
Judson Clarke
179/69 Small Forward/ Outside mid
Dandenong Stingrays

Full write up once my rage at missing Roberts subsides

AsterixTheGaul I believe you are up again

Geelong with pick 36 - Blake Howes (Sandringham Dragons)
Forward/midfielder, 190cm, 79kg

This is called a midfielders draft but there is value in other areas. Pleased to be able to take Howes who offers some polish and excitement. He is a perfect person to play alongside McDonald as Howes will be the natural outlet for him, either receiving by hand coming off a wing or as a target to hit up and capitalise on his strong marking in the forward line.

Recently converted to the wing has showcased his athleticism with the abridged combine demonstrating his leap, speed and endurance. He offers versatility therefore allowing him to make an impact all over the ground. Seen mainly as a forward up until recently, the criticism was his tendency to fade out in patches. His end to the NAB Cup season saw him play more as an outside winger averaging 22 touches 6 marks, 6 score involvements and kicking 2 goals across 2 matches.

At only 79 kg, there will be scope for him to build a decent mass on his 190cm frame and help him improve in contested possession.

Over to you maxrm for Carlton

Zac Taylor write up as promised.
A player with real football smarts, very quick of mind and arguably the most skilled player in the draft. (My other two recruits to date aren't too bad either ;) )
Evasive and for not the biggest guy, shows potential on the inside too.
I have a type, Hawks have a need...Lets win lots of footy.

Profile/s from the experts;

Rookieme/Draft Central

POSITION: Midfielder/Small Forward

SNAPSHOT: “A crafty small prospect with outstanding vision, skills and decision making, Taylor has no trouble finding the ball and makes things happen in possession.”

One of the players who hit peak form just as Victoria’s season was shut down, Zac Taylor produced incredible numbers towards the back-end of 2021. Having made a steady start to the year rotating forward from midfield, he began to take full toll around the ball and eventually featured among a stacked Vic Metro centre bounce mix. The 180cm talent took out Calder Cannons’ best and fairest award and was named in the NAB League team of the year, capping a super campaign which has seen him rise into second round contention. With clean skills and one of the best kicks going around, Taylor is a creative player who can hurt the opposition with ball in hand.

STRENGTHS:

+ Skills
+ Smarts
+ Kicking
+ Evasion
+ Work rate

IMPROVEMENTS:

– Strength
– Inside game

While he will likely be made to spend plenty of time in the front half, Taylor arguably does his best work in midfield. He showcased that with a super run of form in the NAB League, where he averaged 34.3 disposals, 7.0 marks, 6.0 tackles, and 5.6 inside 50s across a three-game stretch. In that run, Taylor not only let his strengths shine, but also proved his areas of growth were coming along nicely.

Looking at Taylor’s best traits, he has all the smarts and skills expected of high-level small prospects. He’s the type of player who looks to get creative with every touch, carving space around him and delivering effective disposals by hand and foot. His kicking is particularly notable, with Taylor exactly the man you want sending the ball inside attacking 50.

A handy aide to Taylor’s production is his vision and evasive technique. As a clever and slippery small, he is seldom caught in possession and often looks to navigate through congestion first, before assessing his options and hitting a target. With that ability to manufacture a bit of time, Taylor is able to consistently make good decisions and execute his skills cleanly.

On the flip-side, Taylor has been working on his inside game. It is listed as an improvement but arguably is not a weakness and moreso an area Taylor can continue to enhance. At 74kg, he will likely need to put on a bit of size before experiencing the rigours of AFL-level midfield work, which may see him gain an initiation up forward or on the outside. Though, during the latter parts of 2021, he showed a nice balance in his ball winning and does not play a strength-based style given his ability to escape trouble with agility.

Having spent a good amount of time in the forward half during his Under 16 and 19 representative duties, and in Calder colours, Taylor could also look to impact the scoreboard a touch more. He is certainly capable of finding the goals, but is more often the one assisting inside attacking 50 or working high up the ground. That was shown as he only registered one major score in seven NAB League games this year.

SUMMARY:

A player who suits the modern game with his quick thinking and efficient ball use, Taylor is one of the more intriguing small prospects to consider. With the toughness, ball winning ability, and work rate to play midfield, he may have to find his way in there through other roles but has the versatility to do so. The draft crop is very even around the range he sits, and Taylor looms as a handy second round option who could provide great value given his professionalism and growing ability.

Knightmare
14. Zac Taylor
Best position:
Balanced midfielder
Height, weight: 180cm, 74kg
Recruited from: Calder Cannons
Projected draft range: 15-45
Plays like: Jy Simpkin
September ranking: 13
Rationale: With one of the strongest closes to the NAB League season, the only question is what Taylor could have produced had the season extended longer. One of the most productive and complete midfielders in this draft, Taylor ended his NAB League campaign with 37 disposals, 22 contested possessions and 11 clearances in a 10-point win against Murray. Taylor's drop can be attributed to the rise of others.
Strengths:
Production
Precise and damaging kick
Vision to hit meaningful targets around the ground and inside 50m
Decision making under pressure
Distribution by hand
Composure with ball in hand
Speed
Agility
Evasion
Inside/outside midfield balance
Contested ball winning
Weaknesses:
Limited scoreboard impact
Unclear forward capabilities
Lack of height and size

Calder Cannons/Vic Metro

Taylor produced a really good draft year that will see him be in top-25 discussions. The classy smaller midfielder just finds the footy and knows what to do with it. He averaged 26 disposals in Calder's NAB League season and he also produced some big games, including a 37-disposal and 11-clearance outing. His kicking stands out: Taylor rarely misses a target and simply makes good decisions.

*Trade Accepted*

Gold Coast have continued their trade partnership with the Brisbane Lions and have traded out pick 40 for picks 49+65.

If Zac is there in the real draft for west coast at 29, I’d happily take him. Great prospect.

You know what, this pick matching crap has confused the fk out of me. I thought I was holding #4 and WCE somehow got their hands on pick 6 to trade to me.

Falco swindled me!
Just catching up on this thread, but your trading is reminiscent of Collingwood trading to get Mundy and ending up with Mayne. 😂😂

When this trade was offered I checked the picks to see why he'd be offering such a good deal for GWS. Was he trying to get in ahead of Freo? Was he trying to just have a couple concentrated early picks? WCE didn't have the picks he was trading "out", so I figured he was arranging a 3-team trade to make it happen & promptly accepted the offer before he could back out.

My very own Chris Mayne trade moment :sob:
Sh!t, beaten too it. One day I will have an original thought 🤷😂

12 hours up. With 37, maxrm bids on St. Kilda NGA prospect Marcus Windhager, the next on my list.

If Monocle is feeling generous, you can choose to match/not match slowly to allow maxrm a chance to change this pick. Up to you. :)
