Well. I just returned home.

I understand that Barlow was a late inclusion into the team, but my god.

I've never seen a player constantly cough the ball up as much as he did. He'd take a mark (an effort in itself) then kick it to an unmarked Cat.

The only other times he was sighted is when he was being tackled.

What has Barlow ever shown?

Did not deserve a spot in the emergencies, or the team. That selection was a kick in the face to all the guys in the reserves who have actually worked hard and are more deserving of a senior game.

It became somewhat comical.

I thought he was included for his height so he could play in the backline?

But he played forward (I think?)

Surely Bevan would have been a better inclusion... and that's saying something.
 
Today's effort from Barlow (and I use the word "effort" under advisement) can only be described one way - career ending. Unless the AFL decide down the track to scrap all the current rules in favour of 3km time trials, in which case we will give you a call Ed! For Vez and MOD and Bevo and many others, it must be disheartening to have see him jump ahead of them into the seniors. The #11 jumper used to stand for so much!! Wonder how Kirks and Bolts feel watching their hard work get butchered so often - must be soooo frustrating...

im not coming in here to say Ed had a good game because sure he did some bad things today but against the Cats its always gonna sting more

but if you have seen Ed in the twos over the past few weeks hes been consistant and obviously the coaches saw today that he was the best fit for the team to play & unfortuantly we lost which made him look worse

cut him some slack...this was his 1st game for this season let him at least have a few more games to continue before you shove him totally

I expect better from you all

The criticism from today's game is deserved Soph. Barlow has been on our list long enough to be judged by the performance on match day. I hear he's been good in the two's but there are certain players who can never make that jump despite looking brilliant in the reserves.

Barlow's football instincts today were fine. But he constantly second guessed himself and by the time he actually disposed of the ball it was to late and he turned it over, got caught with it or failed to present.

Depending on fitness I have to question his position in the best 22 next week.
 
Barlow is soooo frustrating. He's tall (194cm), big and strong (96kg), athletic (regularly wins the 3km time trials) and is a pretty good kick. With all those blessed attributes, he should be a dominant footballer. However for all his physical gifts, he lacks football nous. He lacks intensity at the contests and can be caught ball watching at times, doesn't go full pelt when the ball is in dispute and panics under pressure. I'd rather have a player who isn't as athletic or big (e.g. Jarred Moore) but who has footy smarts than Barlow in the side.

I also dispute the notion that he has been good in the reserves. I think it's been pretty ordinary with only patches of brilliance. I've seen his good games in the magoos and I don't think his current form is anywhere near his best.

Lets lay sycophancy for the ressies aside.

I'm sure he has been doing fine in the reserves. Doing well in the reserves and doing well in the seniors are two completely different things. I wasn't expecting him to come in and play the game of his career, hell, I wasn't even expecting him to do that well. But the fact that he was just god damn TERRIBLE motivated me to start this thread.

It's beyond forgivable. It was reprehensible.

Barlow is 194 cm - same height, similar build to Andrew Mackie, maybe a bit stronger. Mackie was an orinary kick 4 years ago.. similar clutzy turnovers tthat Barlow produced today. Barlow is not a midfielder, certinly not a target up forward. I'd play him up back - though balance with with Mattnerr, Shaw, Tadgh K could be a problem. Probably better upside as a mobile/tall defender than Ted Richards. I'd say stick with him.

No offence Cats Teeth but if you had seen Barlows career to date you would have seen a career plagued of getting muscled off the ball and decision making errors. The concept of Barlow playing up back is sadly laughable. He is also perhaps a poster boy for bedfords and others cause not to play ressies in Canberra, he can dominate up there and look like a bunny caught in the headlights once he goes up a level.

We had hopes he could play up forward, hopes he could play Ruck rover, Hopes he could play on the wing. I still have hopes for the wing, he's fast and he has footskills but JEEBUS he's got to show something soon.
 
Soft and sometimes I wonder what he was even trying to do out there

Everytime he picked up the ball or it was handpassed to him today he tried to run through 3 players instead of giving off a quick handpass.

Here's hoping that is the last time I see him out on the field for us, is he out of contract at the end of the year? Surely Gold Coast would want him (yn)

I've seen a bit of him living in Sydney, but yes CAS79 I guess you are right...unless he can learn to make good decisions in traffic and hit targets at 25 metres, the future looks bleak. Then again he takes a nice mark and taller guys can take a bit of time. I reckon the coaching staff wouldn't write him off just yet??
 
He sure got me angry today.

I sat there on the 50 metre arc marvelling at his debut against Brisbane at the Gabba almost rubbing my hands with glee "Here we go boys we've got a player"

Since then wow tumbleweeds!

I probably haven't seen a better Swans debut so he is freaking frustrating. Poor Bevo at least he would have put his body in if given a chance. He is really out of favour it would seem. Looked good in the pre season too.

Out Barlow in Paul Bevan would savour his opportunity more than a kid IMO

I thought he was horrid in defence and it seemed to dent his confidence when he was moved back there (after playing a couple of pretty good games late last season).

I still reckon his position - if he still has one - is as a ROK type forward. I don't think he's been done any favours playing as an onballer or a "Chad Cornes" type loose backman in the reserves. He is way off filling either of those roles at senior level. Given he is low on footy smarts, surely it would help him to teach him one position he could be OK in, rather than make him the jack of all trades. Even Goodes spent 2000-2002 playing as a key forward (with modest results) before moving back into the midfield (as a ruck initially) in 2003.
