The higher salary cap this year has bought everyone back onto the same playing field.

Initial selection becomes so much easier which means that there is only three ways of separating yourself from the pack:
1) Making the "right" trades.
2) Having good luck with injuries.
3) Picking good captains.

The heavyweight coaches can make up ground from Number 1 but the other two ways of catching up are purely based around luck.

No one can predict injuries and it is even hard to predict how well your captain will score as well.
For instance:
You do not know whether J.Brown will get double-teamed or;
you do not know whether or not someone will tag H.Shaw as it does not happen often.

Injuries and captain performances are basically out of our control.

Furthermore, you also need luck when picking like-for-like players.
For instance:
At the start of the year, you may have wanted to pick up only one "GUN" midfielders
You may have been considering a fair few players, including J.Bartel and B.McLean.
You picked B.McLean instead of J.Bartel.
A "newbie" that randomly picked J.Bartel would automatically have a huge advantage on you even if you researched the selection.

This game is 25% skill and 75% luck.
You're such a ****ing loser. I wonder who's doing crap this year

Blame yourself you spud for creating such a crap starting side. Have only yourself to blame, not bad luck...

..and I wonder who is doing better than 'usual'??!

Of course the higher cap evens out the comp.

Why else would they do it?

It takes the skill out...less time and research for the casual user...simply go out and get all the big names, rather than only being able to afford 2 or 3 and filling the rest of the spots with good middle priced players or up and coming rookies.

I can see first hand the results...I've been in the same league for the last 3 years with the same group of friends.
The previous 2 years I've won easily...lost about 3 games in total in the 2 years I think...
...now this year, suddenly everyone is scoring 1800+ and 10 rounds in and we're starting to look like the same team!

Really they should have 2 comps...a 'fun' league based comp for semi-interested people with a higher cap for higher, closer scores...
...and the over-all comp, with a much lower cap that requires more research and more skill.

Take 1.5 million-2 million off the cap and see what happens :D

It's diffinately easy there is no arguement there. The thing that sucks this year is teams will mirror each other in a couple of weeks and this the biggest weakness of this game this year.

The centres will be the only position where teams will differentiate.
Most teams will still have C.Judd though.

Every 'gun' team will only have 5-6 different swing players.

mm most forward lines and backlines are the same now.

The differences will be such as riewoldt or lucas, J Bowden or Carrazo etc

Midfield, and captain choices are very very important

I don't like the way the first 3 weeks don't count.

I can understand how they want the fixture to be fair but good teams will fly in the early weeks after they land the smokies before round 1, but then everyone else trades to catch up, so there's no reward.

yeh I agree with that. Some Leagues last year had teams that all picked their after Round 2, so they had a much better idea of smokies and whatnot.

Alternatively, they can impose trade restrictions up until Round 3. therefore no one can jump on the guns or trade out their garbage before the price fluctuations...

Let's get real though, Virtual Sports will probabbly make it even easier next year...

I'm new to the forums but I enjoy reading this thread a lot more than most of it. The coaches here are more long-term planners, they might have their bad weeks but are focused on consistency and eventual success. And there is a lot less whinging and other crap, everyone seems like a pretty decent bloke. This is my 1st season of DT but I have tried to do the long term patient strategy as well, it seems to be working since we climbed from position 3500 2 weeks ago to about 700 this week, and I'd expect that to improve with trades and cash still to spare. So keep it up guys, this part of the forum is a definite highlight :thumbsu:

Haha.
You make me sick.
I will finish higher than half the coaches in that league.
That so called league of "EDT" finished one spot higher than my league last year and i missed out on the Grand Final by 9 points.
The difference between me and you is that i actually compete in a very stong league and am a very succesful coach whereas you have no mates to form a league of your own so you join BigFooty for your entertainment in between jerking off late at night.
You are quite sad Daniel.

:eek::eek:

It's pretty good that I sit 353rd overall, yet out of 32 teams, it's only good enough to be tenth overall. Goes to show that we have 29 pretty smart coaches. It's the first year where I haven't been sitting inside of the top eight in the league too. Third best overall ranking in division two, yet tenth on the league ladder. Heh.

Good stuff swansfan......a top 1000 finish in your first season of DT is a great effort.
A lot of the guys from the EDT league have been doing this for a long time. I think its about 13 years for me all up, starting with The Age comp in '93??. Somewhere around then anyway. Its taken very seriously in EDT, trust me. Everybody has perfected strategies over the years according to the rules provided, and they can be pretty different. The key to doing well is research in Feb/March/April
Good luck to you for the rest of the season.
