Went and watched Neerim South Vs Drouin on Saturday... I'm pretty sure, at least I'm hoping Drouin were undermanned coz Neerim gave them an absoulte bath... Hear Drouin are rebuilding and had a few players playing cricket finals on the day, but they finished with only 2 goals on the board and ended up losing by 10 goals. Could be a long year for them. Neerim missing probably 4 or 5 senior players, played about half dozen 3rds players and tested out a few borderline senior players.
Here's my take on a few neerim players. Alex Gavin recruited from Warragul Gulls held his own against a quality opponent in Bobby MaCullum. Didn't win many ruck duals but negated Bobby's taps and probably had more impact around the ground. Nic Edney also originally from the Gulls, did a few nice things and if he can stay relatively injury free should help soften the blow a little from losing Chris Urie. Young blonde bloke from Longworry I think killed it on a wing and off a back flank. handy little recruit. The junior boys made Drouin look very slow at times. Most of them I reckon will be seeing some senior action this year. Mick Urie was Neerims best in my eyes. Dominated in the middle and in for a big year with the absense of his big brother. As is Tyson Morrow who must be on the roids and has gained about 10 kilos of muscle. He kicked 7 or 8 of Souths 12 goals and looked unstoppable. Coach Leigh Sheehan looked a tad off as did Hinkley, Macfarlane and a couple others. Quality players though and should be right come round 1... Be interesting to see though how the fair in the real stuff without Chris Urie leading the way. Off to a decent start though.

NNS will be top 3 or 4 again for sure, a lot of good young guys who can improve.

Nick Edney was originally from NNS, not originally from the Gulls.

Nyora played Dalyston on the weekend, didnt see the game but heard we went down by a bit in the end after fairly competitive first 3 quarters.

Playing another Alberton team Tarwin this weekend at home with almost full strength side so will see where we are at.

The praccy match results I heard from the weekend were that Warragul defeated Garfield, Bunyip defeated Doveton, and Stony Creek defeated Longwarry. I guess its now less than a week til we find out where all the teams really are!

I guess we can already see that Nilma are going to struggle again, looked like average numbers in their 2s as well which is dissapointing. CL smashed LL until the last quarter, I heard LL was very average.

Nyora beat Tarwin in a close game, both teams were still missing a few so cant take a lot from that. I heard Bunyip smashed Doveton and looked really good.

Longworry look like they have lost a few players up north, Serong the biggest loss.

Another Rumour i have heard is that the Ellinbank League will not have 15 clubs next year. There will either be 2 divisions with a few new clubs coming in, potentially Tooradin, Phillip Island, Korumburra/Bena and Kilcunda/Bass.

Or the small orginal EDFL clubs will try and start their own league with 8-9 clubs know that over the long term they can never compete with the likes of NNG, Garfield, Cora Lynn and probably Bunyip and KWR in the future.

Could be an interesting year ahead off the field!!

We had a full team in the 2's with another 6 or 7 away on cricket trips or unavailable. Will be the same this week. The main problem we have is there is only 5 or 6 of us that actually did any pre season plus with no 3rds team we have some real young blokes playing that normally wouldnt.

Thats good to hear, i had noticed there wasnt a full team listed on the results page after the game.

Have dusties and darnum in the last 20 years both had good sides? It seems that one of the 2 is always right near the bottom of the ladder.

Not sure why you think that? Darnum have made the finals twice in the last 20 years, 1995 & 2009, Dusties also made the finals in both those years.

I would guess that for most of the other 18 years Darnum have been near the bottom, whilst Dusties had a lean spell from 2006-2008 there wouldn't have been too many other years in recent history where we were in the bottom couple.

That would probably be because we had a few new blokes playing that just turned up on the day and they wouldnt of been added into the computer yet.

See there was no results in your fifth, fourths and thirds. Did your club had to forfeit all these games or did Neerim Sth not field sides either ?

Unfortunatley we didnt have enough numbers, the 5ths had a combined match no 4ths and Neerim had a scratch match i assume was between there own 4ths and 3rds. The club made the decision on the weekend that we will not be fielding junior teams this year. Its all been done through the League, its sad for the club because i know how hard people have worked to try and get the junior teams going this year.

Unlikely Lang Lang will be fielding a thirds side either. Heard a few other sides are struggling too. Very disappointing.

Why is Darnum struggling so much for junior sides now Plugger/Piezy? Always used to be reasonably competitive when I played juniors, in fact remember quite a few of their junior sides in the finals. Is there a big enough population out that way for all the clubs to be viable?

Hopefully Darnum (and the other sides without 3rds) can get some junior sides up and about next season because without these sides and players coming up to seniors/reserves the club will just die off.

Im only new out there this year so i couldnt really say, there is another junior league in our area that have an abundance of numbers, which our local teams just cant tap into, also soccer is booming in this area which may have something to do with it.

Darnum have struggled for a while, Dusties and Ellinbank have also struggled for numbers at times too. Just seems the 3 EDFL teams plus the gulls is too many in that area to get the juniors especially with Warranor and the Blues also in the Warragul comp. I would have thought that after u/14s the kids from that comp would need to go somewhere to play or do a lot just stop playing??

Surprising LL are struggling Surkin, normally have plenty of juniors around. Not sure how nyora is looking this year but its a battle every year for us to get numbers in 3 teams.
Is it correct the age groups are now u/18, u/15.5 and u/13?? They should change it to u/18, u/15 and u/12, would give the smaller clubs a little bit more chance of getting sides with 3 years in each age group.

Totally agree even under 10's to try and get the kids into footy before they play soccer. Kids from the age of 8 onwards are wanting to play footy but there parents wont let them against 12 or 13 year old kids.

17's, 14.5's and 12s I reckon. Thats how it was when Lang Lang first came into Ellinbank. 18's is stupid - kid's are ready to play senior/reserve footy by that age.

I reckon you will find that it was put to 18's because other leagues in the district were 18's and the kids were chopping and changing clubs to get an extra year of junior footy in before they were forced to play senior footy, particularly those that were neither physically, nor mentally ready to play senior footy.

I agree with U/18's, your right kids are ready at 17-18 to play senior footy and the good kids will play seniors anyway. But you lose a lot of kids who and not even good enough to get a game in a good twos side. At least with u/18s they get to play 1 more season. Most clubs are struggling for U/18s, not seniors, so more kids playing is better.

Did NNG a couple of years ago want to change it to 18,16,14,12 cos they had too many people missing out on a game? If thats right they should piss off to another league, clearly there is only 1 club they care about.

The wash up from round three provided some interesting results. From what I make of it after just one round:

CoraLynn obviously the ones to beat (keeping garfield to just 3 goals)

Goon still look solid, but played against witches hat apparently (buln buln)

Dusites look very strong as well, Santo back, kicking 10, Brewster killed them.

Bunyip finalists for sure

Good to see KWR and Catani with some strong wins (hopefully the improvers)

Thinking LL will be middle of road, still hard to beat at home

Poowong, Nilma, Buln seem to be battling

Nyora, Ellinbank, Longwary havent seemed to have improved from last year.

Neerim had the bye, but again look very strong, from hearing pre season form.

Round One Ladder prediction and league medalist for end of H&A season
