I left school early(15) to pursue a career in golf, kind of put all my eggs in one basket and it didn't quite work out.
Switched things up and started a Chef apprenticeship at 19, worked in that industry for 8 years.
Then switched back to golf and was running a Pro Shop for a couple of years, then briefly switched into the administration side of Golf.

Unfortunately around November last year I developed what is now a chronic case of TMD, so initially I had to cut back and now am not working, which is more than slightly depressing at 31. Hopefully I can get my health right soon and get back into the swing of things.

Is that like rheumatoid arthritis? Sorry to hear that Shizzle and hope you get better and back into the job scene.

Are you PRINCE, PMI, AIPM, PMP or have any affiliation?

I'm wondering whether I should look into heading down these one of these paths. I've just done the basic Diploma training with AIM and OJT but I see a lot of people ask for PRINCE or similar now days?

There is only one PRINCE

No for me it's basically a result of clenching the teeth at night, which despite various mouthgards causes basically a chain reaction of muscle spasms through the jaw, temples, lower cranium, neck.

It needs a holistic approach, physio, dry needling, heat treatment, muscle relaxants, anti anxiety tablets, dental appliances etc, the outlook isn't too bad for most cases.

I'm doing screenwriting at RMIT at the moment (to add to the OP) and part of that includes documentary making. I'm currently making a doco on a late 19th/early 20th century boxer (Peter Jackson). Just got back from Sydney with my eldest daughter who helped me shoot it.

I've got a decent camera and editing suite so if anyone is interested in script-writing, doco making or shooting their own short thing, let me know. Always interested in collaborating and some co-operative set-up with equipment and space if anyone is into that sort of thing.

I told the Doctor a couple of years ago that I was tired and run down during a tough period during my work. Traveling alot and 60 hour weeks, just the normal run down and I ended up having a caveat put on my Health Insurance that void me from claiming anything to do with Mental Illness as I was now high risk. I fought this and ended up getting it struck but it does show you need to be careful what you disclose. This I was told by the health insurance companies nurse also.

This applies everywhere I think. I had a similar experience with what started out as getting my eyes checked, and ending up with an exclusion on my Income Protection with regards to my eyes. Bottom line is there is nothing wrong with them. Being self-employed after this experience, I am very very selective of when and if I ever go to the Doctor

I am a science student. I am currently a tutor for VCE, and specialise in the sciences and english. Any kids doing VCE that need help and have any questions shoot me PMs!!!!!

What I'd like to know relates to Pluto. Have we really taken pics of it or are we seeing snaps of a toasted marshmallow?

IT all the way. Educated in NSW, cadet engineer at OTC then NSW TAB, then private company that started Lotto in NSW, then 25 years at HP, took a package and after 3 months of "gardening leave" joined a privately-owned IT company, the largest privately-owned in Australia.

I spent most of my working life in warehousing for both small business and various national companies, have taught English in SE ASIA for a year, and once worked at a Xmas show as a clown ('cause clowns are the epitome of Xmas????). Then I took the plunge and returned to uni a few years ago - now I'm a registered nurse. Happy to answer any questions or offer advice on any of the above.
Great thread.

Haha well I've read some stuff about this and apparently NASA released some sort of spacecraft 10 years ago, now after travelling at the speed of light it has apparently reached pluto! Amazing what NASA can do but I've never really understood the point of taking pictures of random stuff in the space that is shaped as a ''toasted marshmallow'' xD. ! It's fascinating but costs billions $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

This thread has been around for a while. The OP Old Spice originally had a great idea that has the potential to provide so much benefit to many here in seeking employment, changing careers or just after some general advice from many in here with so much life experience to give like Reyk.
I remember reading this a few years and thinking it was a terrific thread. It may be worth stickying it so it doesn't get lost again imo

I am PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner qualified and a CERT IV in Project Management. Currently completing a Diploma of PM and a Bachelor of Business externally while working full time (fun...)

RE PRINCE2: Depends on what industry you are looking to work in. I know technically Project Management is a discipline and can be applied across many industries (in theory), but for something like IT employers may want PRINCE2 qualification, but for something like construction, employers are more likely to be looking for a construction management degree or an engineering degree or significant experience in the industry.

But I thoroughly enjoyed the PRINCE2 training, I definitely use parts of it in everyday work, along with our organisation's PM framework.
The only thing to consider about PRINCE2 qualification is that it is expensive. I did the intensive 5 day course and it was $3.5k.
Thankfully work paid; I'm pretty sure you can't put it on HECS; So you'd want to make sure that potential employers in your chosen industry want it before spending the coin!

Hope that helps! Cheers.

Until very recently I was employed as a Business Intelligence Analyst specialising in SAP Business Objects but unfortunately my employer has fallen on tougher times and is restructuring. I am now unemployed and trying to find my place again in the world. My head is all over the place right now because there is not a lot of call for mid-fifties aged IT specialists right now although potentially I could go back to consulting which I did for many years dealing with companies like BHP Billiton and Fosters Group but consulting is probably not a great option for someone my age. Unfortunately, with consulting comes numerous job changes and as I get closer to retirement age the opportunities will likely become more and more scarce. I'm really not sure what I'm going to do now but I'm looking for something a little simpler and less demanding. Perhaps I will start my own business and it may even be something like a Jim's franchise but getting my head around such a change is proving to be very difficult. Time will tell I guess.

I am engineer in all things transparencies, mainly glazing. Making things for army usage, Armored car, Transport vehicles & Land/Rail. It's a tough job especially running your own company. But it does have it's perks. Anyone needing any help in the industry just send though a message.

Also ex 3yr year chef & football scout for TAC cup.

I am a chemistry PhD student, although at the moment Im in the early stages of writing up and late stages of finishing off my experiments, so I wont be a student much longer. Cutting a long story short I look at the behaviour of biomolecules (proteins, antibodies, etc) at the solid-liquid interface, so theres a mixture of physical chemistry and a bit of biology there. If anyone is studying science and is thinking of continuing on and doing postgrad, I may be helpful. Not sure about what I'll be doing after I finish but after a period of reasonably heavy inebriation I suppose I'll have to look for a job. I was thinking of looking into patent law as a career so if anyone has any experience with that particular transition I'd be interested to hear from you

Hey PNS I'm sorry to hear this, it's not an easy time when change is forced on you, no matter one's age.
I hope you're able to take a short break, 'gardening leave' as neilk called it, clear your head, and find something you'll love doing.

My mum and Irish nan always said that 'when one window closes another window or door always opens'
There is a gift in everything if we make the effort to look, and allow ourselves to receive it.

Good luck in finding 'your gift'
