Data from footywire. To check the draft order see the thread here.

Footywire says: "While we make every effort to keep up to date with player contracts, it is likely that our data may at times be out of date, incomplete or inaccurate. If you find any player contracts that need updating, please let us know using our brand new contract submission form."

Love Draper as a player and Bryan has potential. But in no way is wright a no1 level afl ruckman can obviously help out when needed but would be a liability if needed to do it full time. His a natural forward

Yeah I don’t have a strong opinion either way. He usually does pretty well when he has been asked to be second ruck.

Either way unless we get a Philips replacement he’s the 3rd best ruck on the list which everyone would agree isn’t ideal.

I suspect Dodoro won't be the one making the big decisions this year...Scott and Vozzo will be making the final calls...so hopefully we don't draft 3 200cm 75kg guys who take 4 years to develop, plus a couple of 4th round Big Bodied Mids like O'Brien and D Clarke.

And then, hopefully, after the trade and draft season, the charlatan can FRO with his long service leave.

RFK like the last 5 years will continue to be the main person in charge with ranking the draft players

Most 200cm take 4 years+

Scott may have a bigger say in the type of player required

But Dodoro who has watched more of the kids than both Scott and Vozzo will have a better grasp on the rankings of them

Gresham compensation pick (Shiel trade) - seems a long shot, but wonder is Ralph softening the ground for the afl to approve this one.
Harmes (trade)

late pick used to upgrade Baldwin

Rd.1 '24 side
Baldwin - Mckay - McGrath

Perkins - Wright - Stringer

Mavbe trade Zerk for Hayes; backup ruck to join his brother.

Cox as CHB?

Dont see that happening.

One is an AFL standard key defender. The other has been passed by a 19 year old beanpole. Would you trade Willem Drew for Alastair Lord? Because that's the equivalent of that trade on our end. Plus it looks like we're getting Goldstein as a free agent, who is better and free.

Lacking a bit of speed in the backline to take smalls?

Question do you have too many KPD's?
  1. McKay (First 22)
  2. Ridley (First 22)
  3. Laverde
  4. Baldwin
  5. Cox
  6. Hayes
  7. McBride
  8. Weideman (F/D)
  9. Reid (M/D)
Even with BZT and Stewart departing would any of the above be possible to also go?

Actual key defenders on our list:

McKay, Baldwin, Reid, Hayes, maybe Weideman

Ridley, Laverde and Cox are tall flankers and McBride got cut.

the answer is yes, even with McBride off that list

the legacy of dodoro - whole lotta talls on the list, and whole lotta gaps in the best 22 KP's

Has Stewart actually been delisted? It was reported but club has never announced anything

Sent from my iPhone using BigFooty.com

It was announced before round 24

It was reported by media then but nothing ever announced from Essendon that I have seen.
Letter from president after rnd 24 even mentions other players delisted but not Stewart

Hm, not sure. Maybe the paperwork takes a bit longer since he's under contract and either the club tears it up or he retires, which would be a bit of a process. I have a vague memory of him potentially going to another club, in which case it would be a token trade I imagine to get him officially off the books.

McKay, Gresham, Goldstein and probably Harmes in.

Try to get Shiel for some decent collateral whilst paying some, Zerk for the two picks in the 40's (after McKay, Gresham and Doedee compensation) and convert Massimo into a pick upgrade somehow and we should be in a position to target higher picks.

if Essendon do all that their rumoured to do it’s

Out:
Walla, Flip, Stuart,

In
Goldy, Gresham, Mckay

Out: Sheil, Snelling

In pick 9 (11) and pick 12 (18)

That leaves Out Zerk + Mass + 2nd, 3rd, 4th rd picks

In 2x players

Looking like a pretty good offseason so far

Replaced 5 end of list players and 2x best 22 (one who was a bad fit)

With 2x best 22 players, 1 useful vet and 4x potential best 22 players aka real depth. Would be a great offseason if it all comes off

This came up for discussion in the Essendon board so I looked up the podcast and transcribed most of it, but I think it's worth dropping the transcript in here too for those curious.

TM: "Essendon is unashamedly ambitious in trying to accelerate its list build, now. Brad Scott, Adrian Dodoro, they want to play finals next year, and win finals next year.

You might say 'isn't that the same for every club?' but every club is different, because some clubs look to the draft and they're on a build, next year and the year after and the year after that.

Essendon feels like it's got enough young draftees, it had 3 in the top 10 a couple of years ago that Archie Perkins draft with Nik Cox as well. So they're trying to get better, now.

And the proof is already in the pudding, with Jade Gresham being on their hit list, but also Todd Goldstein and Ben McKay.

They're not looking for 18-19 year olds, they want to be good right now, and they'd love to boost their midfield as well as either end of the field, which they can do with other players as well.

The Bombers also have, and I use this term sparingly, Sam. They have a war chest, they have lots of money to spend, Essendon."

SE: "I thought you didn't like that word"

TM: "I only use it sparingly, only use it when it really matters."

SE: "They really do..."

TM: "They really have a war chest."

SE: "A war chest. So Dylan Shiel could leave, and Clayton Oliver could come in..."

TM: "Yeah that's a possibility as well"

SE: "... and Ben McKay"

TM: "And they have enough high draft picks..."

SE: "... and Todd Goldstein ..."

TM: "Yes, yeah. And if you go back and listen to Brad Scott's press conference, he made secrets in his desire to turn this list around quickly and do it now. Essendon are not going to wait, they're not going to just have this patient approach and this slowly slowly approach. They want to be good now."

TM: "So the other additional element to take it forward is that senior players at rival clubs were actually informed by their list managers at those clubs a few days ago about Clayton Oliver's situation. So I only found this out in hindsight."

SE: "Why"

TM: "Because these list managers have been aware of this situation for a while – a few days now – and they've already gone to these players and said 'What do you think, can we fit Clayton Oliver in? Would you meet with him, can we organise a meeting? Do you think he fits our team, do you think he fits our cultures?'

So the fact that senior players already know about this, when I thought it was just list manager to list manager, tells me it's further down the road than I may have thought even 12 hours ago."

SE: "Because that's what we've seen with those senior players, they're a key part of that recruiting lure. They sell the vision."

TM: "Well look at Essendon recruiting Ben McKay. They had a group including Redman, McGrath, Merrett and Ridley who all went to meet McKay without anyone else."

SE: "Port Adelaide rolled out there on-ball division to meet with Brodie Grundy, which is genius."

TM: "And especially for Oliver, it's important that – everyone knows he's a gun player, he's a gun player, four time best and fairest arguably when he's fit and healthy the best mid in the comp, if not one of the best 3-4 – but the players need to feel as though he can fit into their culture and fit into their dressing room, and this is a collaborative approach from clubs.

Now I can't tell you which clubs these are, but it's multiple clubs that have players that were aware of Clayton Oliver's situation several days ago and the possibility that they could bring him in, and now weighing up not just their salary cap, but also their culture."

blahblahblah talkback & speculation etc.

Essendon happy to keep Shiel on the list, but if he were to leave of his own accord so be it. Essendon have the money to keep Shiel and pay Oliver. 😱
