essendon VS hawthorn BRAWL - from a couple years ago

It started because Batemen took a cheap shot taking Winderlich out.
I can't believe Hawks supporters HONESTLY think that Vandenburg was being tough. And someone said Essendon are 'deluding' ourselves in that McPhee wasn't being weak...
Watch that freaking video!!! He is being sat on and held down by two hawks players while Vandenberg throws punches. The only weak thing there is the dog act by Vandenberg, HENCE WHY HE WAS SUSPENDED.
I'm all for brawls, i love em, but that was one of the most disgraceful things i've ever seen. Dog. Scum. Shit player. All of the above.

Players like Wallis, Barnard, the Jonhsons etc and there are many more are the reason why the Hawks took it up to you guys. They're the scum and it was their actions in the years leading up to that point that led our guys to take the action they did. I was proud of our boys for what they did because every Hawthorn fan hates Essendon with a passion not to mention countless other sets of fans. You had absolutely no respect for us and we put you in your place - i'm still glad to the day. Barnard's the worst (what a lowlife tossbag).

Absolutely fantastic post- from a Bombers fan who saw the incident for what it was. A bit of good old fashioned biffo. Turning point of the club- you don't see Essendon boys from that day throwing cheapy's around willy nilly these days....
Was a good brawl, wish there was more of it these days. From memory there wasn't as many suspensions as you might think.
I do love how many hawks, especially Dermie claim this is the reason they've had the wood on us ever since. The brawl was in 04. In 05 and 06 we were bottom 4 and Hawthorn generally beat us caus they can run a hell of a lot harder and longer.

For freak sake Bateman at about 50kg's was not capable of a cheap shot. He was a millisecond late in a marking contest that was worthy of a free kick. It was when big tough johnno came in to show tiny Bateman how big and tough he is that it all went haywire. The players had obviously discussed big tough johnno at halftime for his other unexpected display of super toughness after umpires whistle, and had had enough.
I am not saying Vander was tough for doing what he did, but I do know that he did what he had to do and I firmly believe that it still has an impact today.

I hate Essendon more than any club in the world, i really do, i cant stand them. But they were the victims of flipping cheap *****. Essendon got their ass handed to them on a platter, but not through the right means. Hawthorn, led by their "admirable" skipper, fought cheap and dirty, and it was a disgrace. I actually think that it's creeping into the game from League.
Slow up the player on the bottom (grappling around the head), and you'll restrict him from having any real involvement in the play for the next few minutes as he literally clears his head.

As I said, it happened in front of me.
Winderlich dove low for a mark. Bateman dropped his hip and smashed Winders head. Gutless, dirty, low, pathetic act. That started the brawl. Any arguement to the contrary is a lie.
