essendon VS hawthorn BRAWL - from a couple years ago

Intentional. He darted into him.. He changed directions to take Licha out.
Michael Long charged right into Troy Simmonds head. Thats what you call changing directions and taking someone out.

Kevin Sheedy loved having his enforcers so he could intimidate opponents. Remember the "No Rules" match against Brisbane. They were going threatening to take out any Lions players going for the ball.

I would like to know a stat of how many brawls Essendon were involved in during the 90s and 2000s compared to how many brawls overall during the same period.

Geez Vanders is a tough guy, throwing punches at a guy who is being held down. At least he's retiring, good riddance do bad rubbish.

And Mark Johnson was tough wasn't he? Slinging a player into the turf when the whistle had been blown.

It's like throwing a haymaker when the bells gone in a boxing match and the opponent has turned and walked towards his corner.

Someone should give this thread an "R" rating and check ID's at the door.

I do enjoy the fact that you and your supporters keep trying to change the topic but will not accept that what Vanders did was scum... Nobody has actually given me a decent reply to this.

'But so and so did...'

'But he did...'

Your own behaviour reflects the fact that you realise you are in the wrong and are trying to dart away from the issue at hand.

Vanders=Scum

Players like Wallis, Barnard, the Jonhsons etc and there are many more are the reason why the Hawks took it up to you guys. They're the scum and it was their actions in the years leading up to that point that led our guys to take the action they did. I was proud of our boys for what they did because every Hawthorn fan hates Essendon with a passion not to mention countless other sets of fans. You had absolutely no respect for us and we put you in your place - i'm still glad to the day. Barnard's the worst (what a lowlife tossbag).

Trivia: Who are two of the only players in the AFL to arrogantly chew gum as they play? Answer: Mark Johnson and Peter Everitt. And what do they have in common.............

How did you put us in our place!!! We won the game by more than more than 50 points, I don't think showing how tough you were scared us that much. We got the four points and also won the premiership (We could not have been that upset).

Won the next game against the Hawks too..

But their dog players laid a few punches while others held them back... That means they are tough...

Dreaming.

Port fans might have something to say about that.

Feel like I have to set a few things straight because there is a lot of BS in this thread.
The Bateman challenge on Winderlich, while careless was not intentional.
The feeling from Hawthorn supporters was that we never put up a fight and that it seemed we were inhibited and wouldn't stand up to physical intimidation until that moment..
What the brawl did was to get rid of the 'pretty-boy' image. Essendon-Hawthorn games were never a contest in that period but since then we have a 4-1 record (due to a goal umpire who gave essendon a goal after a Jon Hay rushed behind). And dont give me the "but we are so bad now' excuse, we got a priority pick in 05 and were mediocre in 06. In addition to that, the first game this year essendon was well in the top 8 so that excuse is bollocks.
And Crawford was captain in 04, not Vanders.

This is my fave picture from that game.

The fact that you still get so upset about a split eyebrow from a brawl that happened 170 weeks ago is indicative of how pathetic you are.

It was an on-field football brawl that started either:
  1. when Mark Johnson concussed Robert Campbell with a disgraceful cheap shot before half time
  2. when Chance Bateman fell on Jason Winderlich after he'd marked
  3. when two Essendon players ran in to remonstrate with Bateman.
Take your pick: 1,2 or 3

But you carry on like Vandenberg ended McPhee's career or r*ped your sister, calling him scum, etc. Don't you know that footy is footy and sometimes these things happen? Who the f**k are you to be calling people scum?

Never mind that if you walk around Essendon's Hall Of Fame you'll see photos of Bomber greats who threw far worse punches than anything thrown in the Line In The Sand game.

Never mind that your last 2 premierships were soured by dirty dog acts that hospitalised opposition players.

There are some Essendon icons who are the scum of the earth, according to your definition.
I have no time for whiny, hypocrite fans like you. You are full of bad vibes and also full of shit.

What a crock, Vanders hardly landed a punch. You can see he wanted to, but knew he would be rubbed out until the 2007 finals series if he did.

Geez Essendon supporters have spouted a whiny bunch of rubbish about this 'brawl'.

Suck it up, bomber fans. You have Harry Highpants as your captain.

Vandenturd is a coward.
Take special note of McPhee and his finger pointing as he steps backwards. Mouthing off, but retreating. Girl.

Actions speak louder than words.

which players got weeks. For memory Vandanberg got 6 and cambell brown got 4 who else? And the afl made a heap of money from fines.

Its why i think Vandenburg is a scum player. Laid into McPhee why other players held him down. Absolute dog....

Oh well we came away with the W in the end. Lot of good it did the hawkers. Didnt we kick 9 in a row or something after that brawl?

It did plenty of good as you luckily won the next game and haven't beaten us since. Changed the whole dynamics of Essendon v Hawthorn games. The Bombers are now shit scared of playing the Hawks - it used to be the other way around.

I think Essendon thought they were pretty tough and during that period were constantly taking cheap shots at opposition players via Mark Johnson and McPhee. The brawl was started by Mark Johnson just prior to half-time when he slammed Robert Campbell into the turf, after the umpire had already whistled for a ball-up, momentarily concussing him.

After half time Hawthorrn came back determined not to put up with any more cheap shots. When it did start Essendon disgraced themselves and were beat up like little girls; Vandenberg was at the forefront and gave McPhee the bashing that face had been asking for for sometime. Essendon supporters feel they need to concoct a fairytale that he was held down, truth is he was as weak as piss. Mark Johnson whined to the press that he feared for his life after Nick Holland held him in a head-lock. The Essendon bench was quite a site with all the bloodied players - Windowlicker, McPhee, etc.

The culmination, Essendon was shown to be paper tiger tough guys and Hawthorn has owed there ever since. Hence the bitterness Essendon supporters hold towards Vandenberg.

:thumbsu:Class! Exactly how i have been TRYING to explain it to Essenscum fans for years.....nice one!!!

Perfect summation.

As well as the Bombers being our b****es ever since, McPhee has played some absolute howlers against us. As Dermie says often enough - it was short term pain for long term gain. That was the day Essendon could no longer intimidate. Called their bluff and they folded.

You wouldn't understand....go watch netball!

Sorry, but the large proportion of female fans Essendon have due to the Lloyd/Hird connection have no idea regarding the benefit of the intimidation factor in contact sports.

Good fight and I love the biff as much if not more than anyone.

But the Dons won by 74, somehow I don't think that "drawing a line in the sand" effected the game.

Result of that game was irrelevant as our side was at their lowest ebb at that point in time. What it did was change the dynamics of all future Hawks/Bombers matches and perhaps all Hawks matches in general.

Put the shoe on the other foot for a minute.

Go on, take a deep breath and really think about it.

I dare you.

Once again.. Punching a guy that is being held down by two others. Yeah real tough.

There simply is no comeback to that. Whatever you think of McPhee. That was scum. Accept it. Move on. I'm not talking about any other hawthorn player. Im not talking about McPhee. I'm talking about Vandenberg unloading on a guy who had no ability to defend himself. Not a fair fight. Scum.

The thing is.........no-one gives a f**k. It may well have been all the things that you and all the Essendon fans are saying. Point is - coming from Essendon people it means nothing because their club have been the kings of the Cheap shot for 20+ years. Right or wrong - that day the Hawks said F**k this - enough is enough.

Funnily enough - Essendon now look sideways playing the Hawks. They are now intimidated.

I think Port won the flag that year.

That's crap, out-played, fair enough, you have a better team, but looking sideways is just a way to make that day sound "worth-while".

There was a fight, big deal, we don't play the Hawks any different to any other team.

That's an absolute load of crap.

You can say what you want about that day, you can defend your players all you want. That's fine.

But don't pretend for a second that our players are scared of Hawthorn or anyone else for that matter.

We're an ordinary football side for a lot of reasons, but Hawthorn aren't one of them.

Pull your head in, or perhaps pulling it out might be a better idea.

Another Essendon supporter who won't admit what has happened ever since the 'line in the sand game'

Every fan except Essendon fans appear to know what happend that day and the constant denials are getting a bit boring!!!
