The players won that in spite of Simpson, not because of him. In the second round of that year the boys had one of their best away wins of the season with Simpson at home attending to a family drama and forwards coach Jaymie Graham at the helm. This is after Simpson coached them to a thumping loss at home in round 1. Don't forget that had Simpson had his way, Sheed would've been off the ground in the final few minutes of the grand final. Sheed refused to come off the ground and went forward creating an extra unmarked player down there. Inspiring from him, no thanks to Simpson.
Ridiculous take.

You're one of those "players get the credit when they win and coach gets the criticism when they lose" types.

You don't take a side to two GF's and a premiership if you're a spud.

Sure things went **** up at the end, but to call him a "spud coach" is just plainly wrong.

Not to mention disrespectful.

You hit the nail on the head here, especially when the poster is a Sumich fanboi.

Are you sure about that? Have you heard of someone called Robert Walls?

Do you think he was?
No.

I also think that Walls did well to win a flag at Carlton, before spudding it up at Brisbane.

Just like Pagan did well at North, before spudding it up at Carlton.

Just like Simmo won made 2 GFs and won a flag in his first 5 seasons, before spudding it up after Covid.

Management in any position end up hitting a use-by date but it's pretty dumb to call a premiership coach a spud, unless it's a fluke artist like Luke Beveridge.

It's pretty dumb to think Walls was ever a good coach. His overall winning percentage was 46.97%. Not too many have had lower than that. When he went to Carlton in 1986 they were a side that had had back to back premierships in 1981 & '82 under Parkin and played in finals in '83, '84 & '85. John Elliot was impatient for another flag so Parkin went and in came Walls leaving many scratching their heads. Walls immediately benefited from an injection of quality interstate players like Craig Bradley and Stephen Kearnahan. Similar to the Eagles in 2018 Carlton was able to get up and take the 1987 flag in spite of their crap coach. Carlton eventually realised their mistake in appointing Walls and got rid of him during their worst season in 24 years in 1989, replacing him with the man they should never have fired in the first place - Parkin. They quickly became a mainstay in the finals again and became the first team to win 20 matches in a home and away season in 1995 finishing 20-2 and then going on to win the grand final.

Meanwhile Walls had gone to the Bears in 1991 where he'll forever be remembered for instructing eight of his Bears players to circle the recently recruited Shane Strempel and take turns beating the crap out of him. The players did what they were told until Brad Hardie called a stop to it, telling Walls “we’d better stop or we’ll kill him”.

With a string of utter garbage seasons under his belt, Walls was told half way during the 1995 season that he would not be reappointed as coach. Buoyed by this news, the Bears players went on to win seven of their next eight games and take the club to their first ever finals series.

He moved to Richmond the following year where he lasted just one & a half seasons before being forced to permanently retire.

Cool.

It's also pretty dumb to think Simpson was a bad coach, after making 2 grand finals and winning a flag from Perth + having the highest winning % and winning the most finals of any side during that time.

Especially when you think Sumich, of all people, should've been coach instead of him.

Back to Expectations for 2025, I’m more concerned about percentage than ladder position. And maybe that might mean a couple more wins.

I’d say it’s a transition season. New coach so new game plan. Also it may mean some experimenting with older players while finding the best position for the newer ones.

Hopefully, Hewett plays most of the season as he could be our star ‘recruit’.

Also we develop a back up KPD as HEd is unproven and Gov is a warrior but showing his age. (Bazzo and maybe Maric are Will Schofield not KPDs.)

Hopefully, we also sort out the ruck situation. Either Flynn gets on the park and or …

Continued development for Long, Hough, Ginbey, Reid, JWill with Bazzo finally finding his feet. Hall to strut his stuff.

And we find if Dewar, Johnston, Brockman, Rawlinson and Burgiel(?) are up to it. Same for Barnett. And surely last chance for Jamo? Chesser? Petrucelle?

Meanwhile, Hutch and Maric show steady form and find their best possies.

AReid - and Livingstone? - improve to become best 30.

And hopefully the newer recruits improve so some are knocking on the door. And the rest are at least solid Beagles.

Of the senior players, they show serious spirit - regardless of reputation - or become mentors in the Beagles.

And the Beagles are competitive. Mid table or maybe even better.

Then hopefully in 2026 we’re in a position to start getting serious.

This is it, you never know. Momentum is a massive factor these days.

If we get on a good roll start of the year, we could upset alot of teams. Hawks last year (although they steamrolled the back end), our start to 18 etc

I would be putting huge efforts in to turn Optus back in to a bit of a fortress, make it hard and gritty for any teams coming over.

Yep, turn off the water in the away change rooms etc.

More seriously, want to see significant improvement enough to keep Harley and the Beagles to also improve to make finals.

Nope, he won a flag.

You don't win flags being a muppet, even if he had Elliott's brown paper bags.

How many flags has Sumich won, at any level?

Stop straw manning. I never called Simpson a muppet. He was a good public speaker and had other good qualities I just don't rate him as a coach. As far as Sumich goes, he never got the chance as a senior coach but all the signs were there he would've been successful. He was an instrumental part of the Eagles flag in 2006 as Worsfold's assistant and had great success with the U18's. It'a just a shame in my eyes that he was overlooked for Simpson because the board (the majority of which at the time had no football experience) wanted someone away from the West Coast brand.

Sumich got overlooked for numerous head coaching jobs for a reason.

Thank god he was never appointed HC of West Coast.

'Numerous'. He's on record as saying he was quite picky in the ones he went for, opting out of applying for the Gold Coast Suns vacant position in 2017 for instance because he thought it wasn't the right fit. He also wouldn't have hung around long if he didn't see success within a few years. He's on record saying he'd sack himself.

Well, he never made it as a head coach, so we'll never know.

No point fantasizing that he'd be better than an actual premiership coach, especially when he supposedly said when going for the WCE job after Woosha left that the squad needed a cleanout and rebuild.

Guess he was completely wrong on that part, eh?
