Fall and Fall of Big Bash

The only one I know of is Finn Allen.
And he was disappointing.

Unless the tournament is shortened by a few weeks, you won't get many players committing.

The tournament starts and finishes at the right time. There is no way the TV networks let Tennis have those two weeks to themselves with no real Cricket content.

Fair enough.

But the length of the tournament is one of the reasons they're not attracting big names or are unable to keep them for the whole series.

If they want to finish this weekend it should start on Boxing Day, but I’m not sure why they want to drag it out until Australia Day when they refuse to play on Australia Day.

Yeah, there was an article last year that said otherwise - agents saying their players often took ILT20 contracts ahead of BBL simply because they were offered first.

I remember that article last year.

The same thing has happened again this year though.
Players are getting a good lick for the BBL and then going to another comp before it finishes.

Laurie Evans calls for a shorter Big Bash League window as star import departs on the eve of finals

Laurie Evans said it several times last year.

Why do you think a lot of players aren't committing to the full season?
Because they can get paid more elsewhere, but don't want to admit this publicly.

The same players don't complain about the IPL running for 2 Months.

I do think it might be time for the BBL to change course.

It might not just be that they are paid more elsewhere but also that the BBL franchises are weak and lets them play in both competitions so they get paid twice.

Take that option away.

If you want to play as an overseas players you need to commit for the full season, or at least around international fixtures, not domestic T20 tournments elsewhere.

Yes you would lose a few players for good but it is not like the old days where you had Gayle, Murali, Pietersen etc to lose. The internationals are not big names to start with. I can't even tell you name the Afghan spinner that played for Hobart this year and left FFS.

I'm sure there would still be some that choose the Australian summer lifestyle over the middle east dollars if you forced them to choose instead of rolling over and letting them take the cash from both.

CA / BBL franchises will never be able to financially compete with IPL or Middle East backed competitions which is precisely why we compromise

Take what we can get then. I think you would find some English players especially would still come down and play for the lifestyle, hit the beaches, chase some tail. Billings, Jordan etc have stayed for the whole year this year. It is pointless having Vince come down and then piss off to the middle east in the middle of the tournament. Vince has been good for the sixers over the journey but no one is going to the big bash specifically to watch him play. Same with the rest of the internationals that have left. None of them are moving the needle. If we have to go back to 6 teams instead, just do that.

I like where youre coming from Hammy. But as western said, we cant compete $$$.

the A-League and some influiential ppl played the "lifestyle" angle to convince others and potential players to commit to australia. Easy going nature, beaches, weather, kangaroos!. That's straight from a holiday brochure, not convincing someone to pack up to ply their sporting trade down here.

We saw this summer with implied pressure and influence from the BCCI/India. Why? They got $$$$$. Money talks. We're a great nation but in the world scale, we're like the boy hangs on and follows the big boys at school while not really being a part of the gang.

850k through the gates for the regular season, not including the 3 washed out games, for an average of 23k (last year was 21.5k including finals). Haters in all sorts.

BBL|14 average attendance for primary venues
Perth (5) - 38,506
AO (5) - 28,593
MCG (4) - 27,938
Gabba (5) - 26,593
SCG (3) - 23,198
Docklands (4) - 22,923
Showgrounds (3) - 13,559
Bellerive (5) - 7475

The two worst grounds remain a long way off the pace, but Hobart will catch up once they get a proper stadium that people want to attend.
Bellerive terrible for footy but on a balmy summers night love sitting on the grass hill for canes games, plenty of others love it as well

Mitch Owen was one of those "grade cricketers" that get derided so often in this thread.

No, he isn't. He's played a dozen Shield games and a dozen ODDs in the last season and a half.

It's wild how many people I've seen tonight making confident statements about guys that they've never seen outside the BBL.

Rise and Rise of Big Bash continues: 927,790 total attendance across 41 completed games = 22,629 average.

Obviously could have been much higher if not for some unfortunate finals venues, though I'm happy for the 12 people squeezed into Bellerive who I'm sure had a ball.

He's played close to 20 grade games in the last 15 months. He is absolutely someone who would have been referred to as a grade cricketer despite not being one.

What an incredible attempt to formulate an argument

"We have a few grade cricketers in the BBL, hey?"
"People would call Owen a grade cricketer!"
"Yeah, he's clearly not one, so what does it matter?"
"People will call him a grade cricketer!"

What's even the point that you're making? That people are wrong because of this completely false equivalence that you have created, no one else?

This is the definition of a strawman argument. "Everyone who made this argument (that I made up) is wrong!"

Yeah look I wouldnt have my post in my hall of fame for creative genius but It seems you disagree and that is okay.

I've been pretty consistent in that I don't believe the comp needs many internationals as Australians don't know who they are anyway and the guys getting picked as the 11th best player on each team are still excellent cricketers who are more than good enough quality for a domestic competition.

The poster in here throwing around "strawman" accusations:
We gotta shrink this league.

The numbers for the extra 2 teams were supposed to be filled by internationals.

Mmmnope, that's an argument you made up.

The extra 2 teams were supposed to create more opportunities for local players, and that's what has happened.

Having quotation marks around grade cricketer made it pretty easy to get what you were saying, I thought.

"Grade cricketer" is a common putdown by people who shit on the BBL for, you know, reasons. That a lot of those guys have been in and around state set-ups is something they don't know and don't particularly care about.

My all-time favourite of this genre is this one:
