FAMOUS DT COACHES 2012

For those new to the thread you might want to have a look at last years version of the thread (Part 1 and Part 2).

The famous coaches thread will track the Dream Team's of 10 coaches this year, including a previous Dream Team winner and last years SuperCoach winner. The term famous is very loose, with the coaches selected being chosen to be followed because of a combination of their previous dream team history, standing in the Dream Team community and most importantly willingness to provide a valuable insight in this thread.

molly posted his side in the 2011 version, so I thought it would be a good idea to kick it off for 2012 now.

I've put my team out a bit on twitter and one episode of the Coaches Box Podcast but here it is as of today (note: subject to change):

AFLSpace.com Hacks
Remaining Cap: $14,600

DEF: B Goddard, H Shaw, G Birchall, G Broughton, M Golby, B Lake, B Ellis, T Bugg, P Yagmoor

MID: S Pendlebury, G Ablett, S Mitchell, J McCarthy, S Coniglio, J McDonald, D Shiel, J Magner

RUCK: S Mumford, J Giles, J Redden, O Stephenson

FWD: A Goodes, N Fyfe, D Martin, S Sidebottom, P Dangerfield, D Hale, J Porplyzia, D Smith, A Hall

(Thanks to FootyNerd bookmarklet for ease of creating the list)

As I say, open to change. Main areas of possible change:
Yagmoor - If not picked or better looking option arises. Also considering if downgrade a forward before final lockout, could go with a better defender.

Magner - Injury. Been upgraded so should play early but rookies always a worry.

3 rookie rucks - Giles did well in the end last night but this tactic has become very popular and could byte us on the arse at some point and allow someone with 2 prems to kill us early if Giles doesn't perform

Mummy over Cox - got nervous on Cox and decided that could use money better else where. Also opens up the opportunity to bring in Cox in round 12. Mummy made me nervous not scoring well early but snuck up to 90 odd which is what I need from him. Hopefully tough opposition will get his competitive streak going! Was happy to see no backup ruck with him!

Goodes - Slow starter. not great game was hoping for last night!

Hale - This could definitely change before lookout. Late come to the side. Good NAB cup. No Bailey. Solid up forward. Weak Second ruck (while Bailey is out). So could breakout a bit and be the guy I upgrade to Cox. Do like flexiblity to trade him into the Rucks at some point if needed!

Porpz - I think we all get the risk here. Could be good return though!

No Buddy - Could make or break my year. I think I have used the money from not getting him well but time will tell. Backing in my theory that he could have a relatively slow start and come down in price to trade to early (say round 7ish)!

Byes - I have a good mix of players to bye weeks but not confident that I have a good strategy yet!

Low cash - Have gone into last 2 seasons with 200k+ cash and really it hasn't worked. Having said that, with this low cash figure means that I have little room to error if I get an injury or the like! I guess though with less rookies, have option to downgrade to cash cow instead of side trading if I get an injury/poor start!

Great to see this thread still going guys, sorry I can't contribute much anymore - running your own business doesn't leave much time for DT I'm afraid.

As they were part of the first 2 years of this thread, I'm sure you wont mind me including a link to the DT TALK's teams at DreamTeamCheat.com

They've done so much to build up DT in Australia and help us all over the years, I think it's only fair we help them maintain their servers - which cost a lot, trust me!

I feel they should be included again this year and if so, I'll post a copy of their teams come lockout.

This was the most enjoyable thread to follow last year. It's great to see Molly back again, he added a lot to the thread last year. Thank you for all of your work last year MMM in collecting the data, it seems the baton has now passed to Jolldo. Kudos to your successfull 2011 Jolldo and good luck this year.

The DT Talk boys have really ramped things up this year on their website so it would be great to follow them again this year. Would it be possible to include the footy tragic guys also?

One of my favourite threads from last year and the year before and great to see the boys again, including new ones such as Impromptu.

Loving the DT Talk boys work this pre-season and good luck to Jolldo for 2012

:thumbsu:

Would like skankdanker and the dt talks boys still involved in this thread.

Was good viewing.

I'd be interested to see the DT Talk guys on here, especially Calvinators team with that backline.

You can see how the group think influence has taken over the forward line....All 3 are exactly the same. Only trouble with isolated forums imo, I know our SCE is similar. Worked last year for us, but I suggest YSCC had similar group think which caused problems.

Not that I should speak on his behalf, I seriously doubt he will be part of this concept. No doubt if you track down his team you can talk about it to the cows come home, but not sure he will be active in this thread.

Not sure if it was this thread or the other thread, but NP'ers has almost played its role in the improvement of the DT boards and hence their involvement has been reduced. (I think rival private sites have helped to reduce their posting as well)

Once we've finished Lockout V3, I will then post my team and already after one game I am getting structure remorse, could be a long season.

Interestingly they (DTTalk) copied (kidding) my Ruck division so sometimes group think is just good players are good players! I do think in the past I have seen them think similarly and if parts of that fall down then the whole group falls down.

I have definitely tried to do my own thing this year more so then ever. The only player I really choose off the advice of others was Shiels.

By the way, on my team. I am nervous of having three rookie Backs and also in Hale in the forward line. Not sure I have the guts to pull that off. Considering mitch or Pendles out for a rookie and putting prems in the back and forwards. Might even go back to Hayes for Mitchell, Hargraves in the backs and a little extra cash.

Just some thoughts.

I can give you my full side as of right now (obvious proviso that it may/will change before final lockout):

12 Monkeys Fanplanner squad in the Dream Team competition coached by m0nty. Salary cap left: $30,200.

Heath Scotland, Heath Shaw, Brett Deledio, Andrew Mackie, Brian Lake, Ryan Hargrave, Cameron Guthrie
Brandon Ellis, Steven Morris

Dane Swan, Scott Pendlebury, Gary Ablett jnr, Kane Lucas, Stephen Coniglio, Dylan Shiel
James McDonald, James Magner

Dean Cox, Jonathan Giles
Jarrad Redden, Orren Stephenson

Lance Franklin, Adam Goodes, Nathan Fyfe, Dustin Martin, Robbie Gray, Jason Porplyzia, Devon Smith
Aaron Hall, Tory Dickson

Yes, I started Shiel over McDonald. As usual, I forgot to check and didn't follow my own advice in the hectic action of the lockout. :(

Interesting picks in Mackie and Lucas Monty.

What made you spend the extra 100k on Lucas instead of a rookie?

Funny you should mention those two. I'm looking at them and thinking I could have Goddard and Clay Smith (or another minimum priced rookie) plus $15k or so. Difficult to justify, really.

Can i just ask a question to the famous coaches listed so far, do they worry or take into consideration the amount of money they leave in the bank at the start of the season.

Have they had any past theories on the money in the kitty at the start? should you spend it all or keep some to help with trading. Any past experiences, good or bad?

Considering we don't have much to talk about until teams are released will any coaches aim to have a certain amount of spare cash and if so how much? do they have a limit of spare cash where an amount may be too much or too little.

Also as we now have the Sydney vs GWS game out of the way, would we be able to know who the coaches have picked from those teams? or is this information still private.

No expert here Zieb, but I try and leave enough coin to enable an upgrade from the weakest rookie you have in your team to allow for a trade to the strongest in case someone comes out in a bolter or injury in the 1st 3 rounds.

If you select Magner and he flops or gets injured and you have little to no coin saved it makes a single trade very difficult given his rookie price. If Wingard puts in 2 100+ games it would be nice to have the coin to do a single trade from Magner to Wingard.

Each to there own, I know I got burnt last year with Irons and didnthave the cash to single trade him out.....Managed to keep Irons all year actually.

You have to remember that often when you're asking coaches on this forum about their advice, it is biased towards overall ranking and not league winning.

I personally think that if you're aiming for overall ranking then leaving too much money in the bank is a waste. There is often somewhere you can spend that extra money to improve your overall scoring power or JS. Anything over $50,000 I would find a way to spend it, maybe turning a borderline rookie into Congilio or upgrading a borderline premium back/forward to a known premium.

should you spend it all or keep some to help with trading. Any past experiences, good or bad?

I don't have a problem leaving anything below $50,000, but I always manage to find a way of turning a Birchall into a Scotland or Murphy into Boyd... those kind of upgrade occur to leave me with roughly $20,000 in the bank.

Considering we don't have much to talk about until teams are released will any coaches aim to have a certain amount of spare cash and if so how much?

Answered above, at the moment it happens that my team has $3,900 spare.

do they have a limit of spare cash where an amount may be too much or too little.

Also as we now have the Sydney vs GWS game out of the way, would we be able to know who the coaches have picked from those teams? or is this information still private.

I've considered posting which players I have in my team, but I am sure most people can wait another week for that information. I think there are a few key factors that alter most structures in my opinion.

1. 3/4 Rookie ruck structure
2. 3/4/5 Premium midfield structure
or a combination of the two.

Those have been my big decisions over the pre season and listing my players already will potentially give away my structure.

We have Monty/Molly and a few others that don't mind showing off their teams early. :)

I have no shame showing my junk in public! ;-)

On the cash in the bank, I have started with over 200K in the last couple of years and I haven't made it work. I think it is possible to make it work, I made other mistakes in other areas (not having Sandi as ruck early, Folly) so if I hadn't of made them, maybe it could have worked.

I do sort of agree you are playing catchup most of the year.

As a rough rule I like to keep 30-50k in the kitty for disaster relief. Any more or less than that range and I start getting antsy.
