Fans furious over Nine's cut

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/fans-furious-over-nines-cut/story-e6frf7jo-1225782726557

FURIOUS rugby league fans have slammed Channel 9 and demanded an apology after the network abandoned coverage of Melbourne Storm's premiership celebrations. The network stopped its live broadcast and cut to its regular Sunday night news bulletin just minutes after Storm claimed victory, preventing fans who were not at the grand final from seeing the trophy presentation. Storm fan Peter Crossley watched the game at home and said the network's treatment of Melbourne league fans was "pathetic".

Nine defends switch

http://www.leaguehq.com.au/news/lhqnews/nine-defends-switch/2009/10/05/1254700978270.html

SUNDAY'S National Rugby League grand final telecast was a ratings winner for Channel Nine, but a public relations disaster. Callers swamped talkback radio yesterday to complain about Nine's decision to cut the live broadcast soon after the game had finished, at 7.10pm, and switch to the news. At the time, Melbourne Storm players were celebrating their triumph over Parramatta, but the premiership trophy had not been presented, nor had Billy Slater's Clive Churchill Medal been handed over.

its funny reading that last year channel 9 showed the presentation and Melb didn't even win!

so they can show Manly lifting up the trophy but they can't show Melb lifting it up? what does that mean then? Channel 9 obviously is against the growth of RL in Melbourne as further accentuated in the lack of RL coverage.

Channel 9 all along said that it was not going to show the presentation, there is no conspiracy here , just a ratings driven agenda that might backfire.

ok well, nine news normally gets roughly 460k for its news on a Sunday evening.

Last year the storm attracted 487k, so it was six of one half a dozen of the other. They would have underestimated this years unnofficial figure of 650k if they were planning to cut the post match all along.

for heavens sake, just for once, have a bit of sympathy for the fans down here in Melb.
How would you like if Ch.10 or whoever broadcast the afl gf in Melbourne did the same thing? You would be tearing your hair out.

When did I say it was the right decision, I do have empathy for Storm fans (not so much sympathy). But it was a bussiness decision. What would of got more viewers in Melbourne? I'm guessing that numbers would of dropped off if they showed the Post match, not just for the post match but the news aswell. The same reason that Ch7 do the same to the AFL after every Sunday game. Doesn't make it right.
