I can relate a lot to this. I could probably quote the Brand New, The Wonder Years, and La Dispute songs you mentioned lyrics by memory off the albums you mentioned I like them so much.

As for The Smith Street Band, I wish Wil Wagner was a novelist and not a singer because I don't care for his voice. Yet I'm amazed how popular they have become. I remember seeing him open for Wingnut Dishwashers Union Solo in early 2008 and thinking how amazing his lyrics were and honest approach. Then with Wil Wagner and Friends it got a bit more folky but still raw. But then ,just personally, I found The Smith Street Band a bit generic. I'm going on too much... I'd really like to see Wagner write books. It would be quite Bukowski esque.

Great idea for a thread:

Cocteau Twins
Album: Heaven or Las Vegas
1. Pearly Dew-drops' Drops
1. Cherry-coloured funk
3. Sugar Hiccup
4. Aikea-Guinea
5. Athol Brose
I love them so much, those top two are always my equal favourites, but I could list about 20 that are my next favourites. I always thought they peaked with Heaven or Las Vegas, and never listened much to the last two albums when they came out. But I just recenty revisited them and bugger me if they aren't actually really great too!

The Triffids
Album: Born Sandy Devotional
1. The Seabirds
2. Bury Me Deep in Love
3. Chicken Killer
4. Trick of the Light
5. Madeline
So good, David McComb was a great poet. "Wide Open Road" is a really good track, but it's been overplayed which takes a bit of the sheen off. Could have slipped it in at number 5 perhaps.

The Go-betweens
Album: 16 Lovers Lane
1. Bye-Bye Pride
2. Cattle and Cane
3. Love is a Sign
4. Was there anything I could do?
5. Bachelor Kisses
Nothing off the last 3 albums which came after the decade long hiatus, but they are really great nonetheless. Plenty of good tracks missed out here, the singles "Spring Rain" and "Streets of your town" would be battling it out for number 5.

The Drones
Album: I Sea Seaweed
1. Why write a letter that you'll never send?
2. Jezebel
3. Nail it down
4. I See Seaweed
5. Nine Eyes
I Sea Seeweed was my favourite album of last year. What can you say, every album seems to be better than the last. Gareth Liddard's solo effort was fantastic too.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
Album: I Learned the Hard Way
1. Money
2. Stranded in Your Love
3. You're Gonna Get It
4. Better things
5. Pick it up, Lay it in the Cut
Just great soul music, old school tunes, Sharon's voice, incredibly tight band. Nothing off the latest album, nevertheless it's my favourite album of 2014.

Agree about I See Seaweed, but The Grey Leader would be my favourite track from the album.

Ha ha, I love them but they're probably not even in my top 10. However, the Ken Done junkie koala is probably my favourite EP cover. My TISM list (influenced as much by titles as the tracks themselves):

2. And the Ass said to the Angel: "Wanna play kick-to-kick?"

Aye, great taste. I've been a Ball Park fan since iFly in 2010, I really should have put them in my top 5, only did the Killers for longevity purposes.

I would say

Great idea for a thread... for people who don't listen to enough music to agonise about what they can't include. Not including some old favourites is like choosing which of your children has to go into foster care. On another day I might have made a different selection. I can't nominate 5 songs, there are way too many to choose from.
