...but it isn't
IMO it used to mean that. As an example Sonic Youth were an "indie" band but signed to Geffin a major league player. Did that make them any less "Indie"? I don't know nor care as they are still to me as vital as ever with every new release.Does 'Indie' mean those not signed to a major label?
Agree. It is weird looking for that obscure Brian Eno album that I do not have and finding him in mainstream. What is considered to be 'Alternative' especially in that part at JB Hi Fi would have been mainstream in the 1980s.
No. In truth it was, and still is, a wankie elitist term.Is there such thing as an 'Indie' sound?
We talking real "indie" bands?
Because if you are, just about the only ones around these days would be on Merge, i.e. Superchunk's home made label. One of my favourite bands by the way.
Polvo
Husker Du
ARCHERS OF LOAF
FUGAZI
Sorry About Dresden
Shellac
Superchunk
Pavement
Mclusky
Portastatic
Yo La Tengo
Arcade Fire
etc. etc.
Can't see much that anyone has posted that rates against the real mccoy.
The bands I listen to are sooooooo indie, none of you guys have heard of them !
When you do hear them, I will listen to something else because they won't be indie enough !
