Second time I've heard Arcade Fire called "The" Arcade Fire...

That kinda thing really grates on me...

I realise it's incredibly petty, but does it grate on others?

I hear "The Muse" a lot to....

As for the indie bands, same as most guys here.

Much love for Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Interpol etc. etc.

But they'd be in the "Favourite Bands" thread as well as in the "Favourite Indie Bands" thread.

Are Kings of Leon on an independent label? I'd have guessed they were.

Does 'Indie' mean those not signed to a major label?

IMO it used to mean that. As an example Sonic Youth were an "indie" band but signed to Geffin a major league player. Did that make them any less "Indie"? I don't know nor care as they are still to me as vital as ever with every new release.

What is considered to be 'Alternative' especially in that part at JB Hi Fi would have been mainstream in the 1980s.

Agree. It is weird looking for that obscure Brian Eno album that I do not have and finding him in mainstream.

No. In truth it was, and still is, a wankie elitist term.

I think that the vast majority of new music, any genre you want to name, released today verges on independent. The advent of downloading has radically changed the music industry to the point that the majors are no longer putting their money into new artists and that may possibly cause their own demise. Consequently new artists are "doing their own thing" be that myspace, giving out freebies at gigs, whatever.
