2020 was rough on the A-League. Name sponsor gone, no crowds due to the pandemic, declining viewership, management from both players and clubs in complete disarray. Much like the NSL of old, the A-League was beyond repair and no longer financially viable.
The demand for quality football was still there, and so past owners, football stakeholders and Australian and international business people formed their own consortium to bring about a new league, run for the best interests of football in Australia. Much like the coming together of the states in 1901, a federation of sixteen football clubs from Australia & New Zealand was established to form the FEDLEAGUE. Included in these stakeholders is Italian sportswear brand Kappa, who will provide apparel for all FEDLEAGUE clubs from the 2021-22 season.
The league will commence in the spring of 2021, retaining the parallel season to the European clubs, and rather than cowering away from the competition of cricket in the summer, games will be held during primetime, with free-to-air television picking up a majority of the fixtures.
Some clubs from the previous A-League have either been disbanded, or relocated due to lack of financial success.
This is the future of Australian football.
