Must say it was hard to find a person with anything positive to say about this years finals venues yesterday. No one can believe or find any good reason as to why the league continues to play the Div 2 GF at Gembrook. Not only do the footballers hate playing there in the cyclone that blows but the poor netballers fair far worse as they cop the full force of it down there. Also the fact you cant get a ground further away from Yea, Alex and Kinglake doesnt fair well.

The choice to play a final at Olinda is rather baffling as being up there yesterday and having to park on the main rd is not ideal but theres simply no parking. The ground is not to bad but the changerooms are close to the worse going around and lets not forget how ridiculously cold it is.

As for Yea and Alex being chosen well its only an hour trip:eek:

have to agree re: alex and yea. utterly ridiculous. i can understand the sentiment with sharing them around with revenue and so forth but supporters simply dont travel up there. faced with a choice of going to yea or just travelling down the road to bayswater i know where i would head. dumb decision from the comp.

Agree!! there should only be these grounds in consideration for finals.

1- Healesville. best ground for finals, has everything going for it in every way and dont give me that no atmosphere crap...
2- Worri.. not the best for parking as you see people always having to park across the roads in the factorys car parks and down the rd and on the hwy, also if u do manage to get a park always seems to be a fight to get outa there. the only knock to worri is parking.
3- Yarra junction. is a solid ground for finals to be played on
4- Gembrook.. would be good but conditions are always seem to be shithouse
5- warby if they had netball courts @ the ground
6 Yarra Glen if oval was in good knick
All other grounds shouldnt be even thought of for hosting finals!!!!!
sorry to Yea/Alex! love your grounds but just to far away from the valley

Would love the league to run a survey-1st asking the players which ground they would rather play finals at-2nd ask the supporters what ground they would rather watch a finals game at. I would be suprised if Healesville would be in the top 3,they do have plenty of parking even then cars still have to park out on the rd,then again im there to watch (or play )a game of footy, im not going to the drive in's for a movie, does it really matter if you have to park down the rd.

I think many a time in the past we have worked out there is not one perfect venue in YV, thus the league must come up with a comprimise & try to cater for all interests. That includes trying to show support to the other side of the spur.
From what I can see & what I discussed with most people at our 1st Divi game they are happy with the 1st Divi finals. The biggest 3 issues with first divi last year was Sunday football, Gembrook cyclone zone & Woori home GF. These have all been changed.

Parking is an intersting one. For me I dont care but for young families (women & kids) & the elderly it is a must. Especially if it raining or you are playing at the wind farm

Agree on the survey I have suggested that in the past - very easy to do if the right methodology is used. I know someone who might have the marketing background & the smarts to be able to run this....;)

Seville could tick all the boxes for a finals venue. Except one tiny exception being ground quality ;)

Flatten the chip and its problem solved!

Seville should be the last placed ground for a final with its swamp like ground and outdated facilities. But in saying that they do persist with Gembrook which is clearly the least favourite of all finals venues.

Olinda to host a final? nothing against the ground quite like it but feel sorry for whoever is the away team, not much room for a warm up in those rooms!!!!!

Didnt worry Upwey the yr before in the GF, good luck watching the bigscreen from the othe side of the healesville ground.

Surely some computer guru on here can set up a voting thread. Betting Healesville and Gembrook aren't top three.
If its a matter of financial equality, I know Junction and Woori have done deals in the past with the club winning the rights for a final in effect leasing out the responsibility.

Betting that Gembrook and Olinda are the in the bottom three of grounds people like playing at or going to. Still am yet to hear one good reason why you'd have a GF at Gembrook guess it's a case of who you know.

WE are probably approaching the time to review how finals are hosted and structured. The current system does favour those clubs with good facilities and allows them to steal a march on the other clubs. Have no argument with getting the best, just the process of how it is attained and the other 'costs' to the league and its clubs.
Upwey, Belgrave, Wandin, Monbulk, Mt Evelyn, etc. are always going to be up against it in the finals bonanzas, while Healesville, Gembrook, Warby and Woori are going to cash in. Reverse welfare? That amounts to the disadvantaged subsidising the well-off. Previously, the League levied the host club and then distributed some of the profits amongst the rest. Not sure that is the answer either, as it meant the host club worked its butt off to pay a dividend to those who did nothing.
Geelong & DFL have a system where they lease a ground and entertainment resources from a host club (in this case, St Albans in a neighbouring league, the GFL). They pay the host club to prepare the ground and to entertain the League guests in the social rooms, but don't allow them to sell draught beer from the bar to the general public. The canteen, as well as food and other beer booths (appropriately licensed) are leased to other rostered GDFL clubs, which means three or four clubs from the league have a hand in staging the finals. Each year the roster is rotated so that, over a three year cycle, all clubs contribute and benefit. The league takes the gate and does not charge the host club a levy as we did/do. The host club gets revenue from entertaining the League guests and a flat fee for preparing the ground according to the contract.
This has worked to everyone's satisfaction (with the rider that every club still wants to get more!), has made the staging of finals more flexible and has benefited each of the clubs pretty much equally.
Advantages:

  • All clubs get to share in the finals, both its staging and profits.
  • Better to have clubs work for their handout rather than sitting back and copping a payout for doing nothing.
  • We can target the best grounds and reduce home ground advantage.
  • The host ground could be from either division. This means that a club playing in the final will not have to muster a workforce to run the game and also service the playing group.
Problems:

  • Major one is that host clubs will be downright hostile to sharing their facilities. They won't want to share the golden goose! The system would need to be supported by the clubs to give the Board authority.
  • If the potential host clubs don't wish to share there are two options: 1. Book the ground through the actual owners, the Shire Council, and bypass that club altogether or 2. Select another venue from the choices in the two divisions - and exclude the club altogether.
Maybe we need to examine some existing models that work.
Just throwing it out there...;)

We hosted the Div 2 Elimination Final Day in 2009 and from all feedback from the league and competing clubs on the day, things went extremely well. Yes our changerooms aren't crash hot (both teams) and watching the action from your car is limited, but otherwise its a great venue to watch both sports. Footy provides terrific atmosphere, especially on the hill, and netball court facilites are as good as any in the YV, and are situated 15 mtrs from footy so you can watch both. Definately a positive !

If the the league hadn't given up on the old Kilsyth ground maybe would solve a few issue's. Good ground, plenty of parking, big rooms for both sides.

  Has anyone seen Warby's groung lately? There is no way any team would be happy to play a final on there and they have a home game this weekend, its only going to get worse!
WHY doesn't the leage actually listen to its players/supporters/clubs. No one wants to play at Gembrook.

Im sure Woori would be happy to work under some kind of structure like this, we dont have a big commitee, so hosting finals is a issue when the team is involved on the day. BUT we want the finals played at the best venues, central to the whole league, every final be it GF or minor final has been a great success there, size of ground, conditions of ground, facilities and atmosphere are the main positives.

IMO, every GF should be at Woori !

I agree with Tees, Woori - on a saturday every year, you cant beat it.
Monny Hawk & Burnt Out not bad idea, i like it.
How about we go Free market capitalist economy where all non hosting teams have their own BBQ & Grog Tent to compete (9tents around the ground) -pricing at whatever level they wish to sell at & see how they go. At least MOIN want be whinging the beer & burgers will run out!

Coldstream???

Maybe if the league just chose the best venues that would solve a few issues.
Not sure what to make of that, Finger. The ground choice is pretty subjective. Everyone has an opinion, but the League obviously tries to balance a number of issues: availability, quality of the venue, facilities for spectators, equitable distribution of finals, costs, parking and traffic, home ground advantage, central location, spectator comfort and keeping participating clubs with a number of finals teams at the one venue. Just selecting the 'best venue' is fraught with all sorts of problems.
Coldstream???
Good thought! We don't have to be confined to YVMDFL venues, although I think most would think it desirable to keep it in-house.
Same as Healesville which there is no major problem, other than ground size and atmosphere everything else is fine, but Im sure most in the league see Woori the best location yet its been ignored this year, or between the club and league they havnt liased well enough ?
From the Board's viewpoint I guess Healesville ticks a lot of boxes, but they have to consider the other clubs and spectators, too. It is too big to have atmosphere and is not spectator friendly. Woori is central and has fairly good facilities, as does Gembrook, although the League guests can't be catered for well enough. Warby has a traffic problem, Yarra Junction too small, YG too unreliable and odd shape, etc. I personally like Alex and Yea, but the distance seems to bother some. No prefect solution.
Not sure why Woori is out of the mix this year. The League calls for applications (or used to) to host finals and has a set of criteria for hosting. If clubs don't apply or cant'/won't meet the contract details, they can't be considered. It's also a big ask for one club to run the show, and near impossible if they have to prepare finals teams, hence my suggestion to split and share.
The finals belong to the whole league; not just the Board, the finals clubs or the hosting clubs. The more who get involved, the more equitable it is and it also lightens the load.

So would it be right to assume the ground that hosted the First Div Grand Final in 2010 has been ignored for both Grand Finals this year? If this is the case and Gembrook has been favoured serious questions need to be asked. How many complaints about Gembrook need to be voiced before the league ceases to use it?

Bit the tounge so hard it is about to drop off. Your the only one that sooks that much you goose.

I would love to hear from one opposition supporter that has played in crappy conditions at Gembrook this year. The ground surface is in as good as nick as any in the comp. If we cop bad conditions across the valley then you can sit in your cars that can be parked high and low (2 rows). The rooms are better than most on offer. Having been at every venue this year bar Monbulk - i would vote Gem and Woori as the 2 most preffered venues.

Finger all you do is come on here and complain and whine and moan and take pot shots. Do us all a favour and take a hike unless you can contribute something of substance on this forum...
