He did think that League had been played for 100’s of years and called it Rugba on multiple occasions.

It kinda hurts them that they had a savings fund for if it ever rained and they spent it on a shiney new digital platform

Serves them right. NRL has been played in half-empty stadiums for years now.

I can't see the govt bailing out a football club because of this. Not immediately anyway
There are far too many higher priorities to deal with, and the economy will time to recover after this too.

AFL could drop the minimum cap % and allow struggling clubs to drop their TPP to below 80% (writing seasons off, but staying above water)...but the converse of that is other clubs may need to be able to go over the maximum so the players have somewhere to go

Or clubs may fold.

Both Rugby codes will be in some serious hot water.
Absolutely. The NBL is going to be in Red and is losing close to a 1M a game in this finals series and is a huge cash injection for the game

Playing at empty stadiums is absolutely brutal. The MCG might not put on as many people but still costs money and when your not taking 2m Cash someones effected.

The NRL liquidation the future fund shows they are worried about the season being called off and desperate to make the cash available

Not sure what their exposure is on Dingley. Reckon Geelong would be at risk with new stands that need to be filled to pay the bills.

TBH I nominated 11 clubs, and I'm not too sure about the rest.
Well Hawthorn own the land at Dingley outright. Have cash in the bank. Haven't actually started the Dingley project yet - still planning and fundraising

Seems a strong position to be in

Much better than mid construction of a facility or having just completed something with debts

The Eagles have cash reserves of about $45m so we'll be right. Hell, maybe we'll go into the loan business for other clubs.
Maybe contra deals, i.e., loan of players in return for cash?

Our revenue might be lower, but our expenditure and overheads are also a lot lower than most clubs.

We run off a poor stadium deal with break even matches most weeks anyway, it's not really going to effect us too much from that end.

The clubs over reliant on pokies money are going to get absolutely savaged, once all bars, restaurants and clubs are closed. The same clubs that also rake in the large gate takings because the AFL likes to use them to maximise commercial revenue.

The Eagles $45 million is actually the WAFC money, as they own the licence.
So in reality that $45 million, would be used to protect the Freo licence.
Hahahaha
But in reality, if clubs go under, the TV rights will drop, the interest in the game will drop.
We would all be the poorer if say 4 or 5 clubs don't survive this

if a club or two fall (even 3) and the draft is a mess this year, AFL may go into expansion mode.

New SA team, New WA team, Tas team
Let them pilfer the draft, hand them licences that are collapsing....

Like anyone will have the money spare to pay for multiple startup clubs.

I voted for every club.

Obviously some are a lot more likely to get into trouble than others, but if this goes on long enough, all will suffer.

We're talking hundreds of millions in lost revenue across the AFL & all clubs...It will hurt a lot, and potentially it could bring them all down.

AFL and NRL will both be fine. Why? Because it's content that has to be watched live (it's too hard to avoid spoilers these days). Free to air/pay TV needs live sports, most other programs you can just watch on demand.
There is obviously a huge market of people who want to see AFL/NRL on thier TV so unless ch7, ch9, ch10 and foxtel go arse up they will make sure the comps continue as is.

That is not a harsh reality at all, that is just sensationalism at it’s finest. You should send your work to the Herald Sun.
Its not sensationalism; its paraphrasing what the NRL heads have said. The NRL is more reliant on TV rights than the AFL

Now the AFL has shown its 'social leadership' is a cynical veneer, cut those departments in the AFL HQ. Millions to be saved

just play later in the year? whats so hard?

And our media barons are scum* if they are playing hardball. they already had an extra ratings winner with the bushfire game

*of course we already knew that

Actually the AFL are right now as so much of the AFLs income comes from tickets, tickets that are not being sold now. Sure the NRL relies on their TV rights deal for a greater percentage of their income, but because they do it means losing ticket sales is not as nearly a big a blow for them as it is for us.

V'landys called it "Rug-ba-league" every time he referred to the code and for a so called "top operator" sounded more like a bogan yobbo most of the time.

Huffed and puffed about Rug-ba-league being "Australia's top sport" and they would be demanding to be included in the Feds bailout package.

As if.

Every sector of business , especially tourism is bleeding to the point that the future of the entire national economy is looking very shaky.........and that's now.

And the NRL thinks it is a special case:mad:

But the AFL has its future fund. The NRL decided to liquidate its $50M+ fund several years ago.
