"Has a year to run on his deal at Hawthorn but there's interest in him from around the competition. Given Hawthorn's position, would they listen? Essendon has some interest but not the picks yet. 50-50 that he moves." - Riley Beveridge, Gettable starts at 9m 10s

Probably wins you the ANZAC Day game for the next 6 or 8 years.

But yeah, your team is tops. Dont need hard nut ball winners who can tag and kick goals. Merrett is fine on his own.

Also, I really hope he stays.
Typical dumb response.

He's a good player. I don't deny that. He's just similar to all the other midfielders we have in that he's midfield only, struggles to impact elsewhere. Durham and Caldwell are effective run with mids.

He’s been working on his fwd craft with some success

Essendon does seem like a weird choice but I'd think if they are interested it's because they believe he will unlock one of those guys to be more attacking. You'd know more than me if you thought they were capable of that step.

I'd think he'd fit in at Sydney oddly enough if I was picking a club for him to leave for.

Currently just outside Hawthorn's best 23 with a fully fit list. I'd consider him a required player for our 2025 campaign due to his versatility and consistency as a role player.

He's more than just a tagger, a role he didn't really play much at all in 2024. Showed this year he can be an effective defensive forward who can hurt teams with scoreboard impact if not respected the other way. He can also play as an inside/outside midfielder with elite endurance to go with a big strong body.

Strengths are his running endurance and his game focus/concentration. Always on the move and never going to catch him ball watching or giving up on a chase. Give him a job and consider it done.

Weaknesses are his disposal quality and his decision making speed under pressure. He has steadily improved on his weaknesses each year so he's not the finished product, but he's unlikely to ever be the guy you want kicking inside 50.

Would be worth more to us than what we get in a trade. Our midfield depth didn't really get tested until finals and then he had a really good game against Port.

If we aren't getting a decent 2nd round pick I'm not sure why we would bother trading him

No you're right, the Essendon list is A+ and has zero room for improvement.

Carry on accepting mediocrity, it's what the hanger has done for the past 2 decades and it's working out REALLY well over there.
Not really what I said. I said we don't really need him as there are other and bigger needs.

He's a fine player. He's a good tagger but limited in what he can do outside of that. He's similar to most of our inside mids in that way. But that sort of nuance is obviously beyond you.

You clearly don’t watch him enough if you believe he’s limited.

Barely tagged in 2024 and still got games at a decent rate.

Naturally a ball hunting mid who hasn’t gotten that opportunity but his strength is his, strength, ability to get the ball out and stand up in tackles, endurance, power and versatility.

Can play lockdown small defender, wing, and half forward aswell.

16 disposals 1 goal 5 score inv EF (15km ran)
22 disposals 1 goal 1 goal assist 3 contested marks SF (17km ran - next best 15.5)

Does a heap of gut running in transition and his two way running would be top 5 in the league if not the best.

Which mids/small utilities do you rate higher than him ?

I've seen plenty of him. He still tags quite often and he's good at it. But he's still a very limited player. He had a good finals series too. But at the end of the day he fills a logjam on the inside as a similar type of player. That, and he won't be worth the price you set to us (which will probably be in the second round).

He'd be filling a log jam we already have in Durham, Tsatas, Hobbs, Parish and Setterfield in an inside mid who doesn't really play anywhere else. Combined with the likely cost, I don't see why we should pursue it.

He rarely tagged in 2024.

He isn’t limited as that would suggest he’s pigeonholed. He plays all over the field.

Just wrong here Eth.

Id love him at Eagles. Preferrable over Liam Baker. Add him to the Barrass trade instead of a 2nd rounder I think

He's an ordinary kick, and despite his excellent endurance, he's pretty slow.
I've never seen him play as a small defender.
He's improved as a forward, played a couple of impactful games in that role but plenty of others in which he has been virtually unsighted. Can tag effectively, obviously.
His best role is likely as a ball-winning mid. Wins a heap of the ball at VFL level in that role (and kicks goals) but is unlikely to get that opportunity at AFL level for Hawthorn anytime soon. Could he deliver at AFL level given the opportunities? It would be no better than maybe IMO.

I could see them letting him go for a reasonable pick. A 2nd or even very high end 3rd. Should they not get that then he would provide more value to them by remaining

His kicking is average but improving. At a decent level now, endurance is ridiculously good, but slow? Hilarious. Did speed training a couple pre seasons ago and got a top speed of 39.56km/hr. His speed and power is very good.

He played as a small defender for big stints at VFL level and during games at AFL level.

His lesser performances were longer ago than his good performances, showcasing improvement. Look at his finals series.

He definitely suits that as he is a naturally ball hunting type, although extremely strong defensively. His ability to get his hands up and ride tackles to dish off the ball is first class with his strength & power.

And I’d say a chance.

A second would be the asking and I doubt Hawthorn budge as he is wanting to stay and they want him to stay.
