But there are obvious errors where you think what the * and I’ve got not other words to describe it as idiotic. Examples:

Lynch Sub fiasco
Playing Milera rd 1
McAdam out injured against Hawks on the fast deck of Etihad and replaced with Crouch. Like WTF it was a dumb selection and proved to be as was moving Crouch to the wing.
Hately on the wing, this has been discussed so I’m not going to rehash it.
Turning wings into contested positions.
Keeping Worrell in the SANFL whilst playing an injured Doedee who then needs post season surgery delaying his preseason. Also they had the opinion they couldn’t play Worrell and Doedee together, which in the end they did.
Dawson in defence against teams like West Coast and North.
Playing players you know that aren’t good enough and aren’t part of the future.

Some of these decisions have been picked up by nuffies on here as dumb and guess what, they were proven to be.

Nicks has galvanised the playing group and turnaround our culture, of that there is no doubt and he should be applauded for it. By the same token, when he makes idiotic decisions, I’m not going to just go “oh well”

Yeah, I think a lot of these were errors.

I just understood why a few of them were tried. I understand what made them risk Lynch. And Milera was a gamble, didn't pay off, got dropped. That's fine.

I don't think trying things that don't work is a bad trait - it's persisting with them that's bad.

If something isn't working, Nicks mostly will move on.

The Milera one I can cop but not Lynch, that was just dumb and it was found out and no other club has gone close to the same level of stupidity.

Some of those were and are some pretty basic errors and poor decisions you wouldn’t expect from a senior coaching group.

As for learning, well Hately played 6-8 weeks on the wing didn’t he? He’s still trying to make our wings contested players and so far it looks like Dawson is lining up in defence. Now that we’ve got better small forwards, let’s see if he takes them away from the forward line. He also continued to play players we weren’t keeping.

Really it’s just not good enough for a senior coach to make so many poor decisions. It’s why I don’t think he will make it.

The Lynch one was unprofessional. IIRC we had another player (Jones?) as a travelling emergency.

and some of the selection justification rationale has just been proposterous

He used an injured lynch aa a sub who couldnt run. He could easily of been sacked.

The only mistake they made that day is getting Lynch to even get ready. Should of had the balls to say we were playing 1 short for the last quarter, as teams have done if an injury happened for most of the last 150 years

We were clearly prioritising full game development in the SANFL for our younger players, sub is only used around a third of the time - and even then only for a quarter or so.

Yes Lynch was underdone, and also not ready - which just showed that they weren’t fussed about using him. Even then he was not available for less time than the compulsory concussion check time

Massive mountain out of a molehill

Definitely agree with some of your list. However I think we all agree that our list has been all time bad. Big question marks over a lot of our key young players - McHenry, Jones, Murray, Fog until recently, Sholl, Murphy etc

Because we have been so young - and lacking so much experience - they have definitely made some odd calls.

This year the team is starting to take shape - players started to emerge last year that now have an extra pre season under their belts so we should start to really see what we have.

In my view Nicks has had no chance to yet show he can coach. We will get an indication this year and as I have said before next year expectations should be high. He may well not make it but at least he has the bones of a team now to have a chance

I think Hately only played 2 to 3 games actually on the wing - he only played 11 in total. Happy to be corrected if others remember differently, but only if they have heat maps to prove it. ;)

Selection is a funny one, too.

There's absolutely some that I think were errors - the delay on Worrall, for example.

But I also think every club board (except maybe Geelong) would say the same about selections. Supporters always complain about selections (even if some times they're right), because the version they're imagining doesn't have to run out there, so in our mind they would have always been better.

He got moved out of the middle when Crouch returned round 11 against Geelong and he played 6 games on the wing, which was 6 too many

That’s a good point, Seeds in 2021 averaged 6 contested possessions from 26. Sholl in 2022 5 from 16, with a number of those games as the sub.

It’s almost as if Nicks during 2022 forgot about what a weapon Seeds was playing the wing properly and decided he’d change the way wings play.
My 2 wings would be hinge and dawson

Knowing Dawson will spend some time at half back who you think is next in line ?

Gotta feeling it will be Jones but he’s no lock that’s for sure , hopefully someone else can put their hand up

Could have thought he was leaving or he previously played well and couldn’t get a game. If he’s had a good preseason and preseason matches I’d prefer him to Jones who hasn’t done anything on the wing whilst he’s played AFL.

But do you agree the focus of the wing shouldn’t be contested ball but run and carry?
Sholl has definitely been unlucky and out of favour

He was having some decent sanfl games with no reward , not even emergency list

If Nicks doesn’t rate him maybe he should use him as sub as he can come on and outrun opponents

Yes they would be mine but with Sholl as the next option. Jones is only getting a crack because of his draft position. He won’t be a good wing, just can’t win enough of the ball and on the wing I can really see him struggling to get in the play and running around like a headless chook.

Was is against West Coast when he was doing nothing on the wing and was replaced by Soligo who was everywhere? Pretty sure it was, I had Soligo on possessions and he came from nowhere to finish one short and finish the game on the bench. Not happy Jan

I think not picking him late in the year was more about not costing him eligibility for the SANFL finals.

Yep Soligo can play anywhere

But I hope it’s forward and inside mid … and more and more inside mid

And Sholl can ? .....give me Jones everyday over Sholl ....Jones will surprise a few this year & there's a strong chance Sholl won't be at the Crows next year

Jones >>>Sholl
Nankervis >>>Sholl
Hinge >>>Sholl

And my opinion on Dawson .....he should be playing the Bontempelli Role now ....get him in the midfield, we're not short of capable Wing options

Um yes he can, strange comment. His career high is 31. Season high in 2022 was 24, 7 of his 11 games he had 19 or more possessions, 2 of the 11 he was sub.

Shall I compare that to Jones?

What’s even more damming is Jones pick 9 in the 2018 draft, Sholl pick 64 in the same draft. Sholl’s career has shat on Jones so far and Sholl is slighter than Jones.

You’ll keep cutting Jones slack and yet Sholl zero.

And if you’re talking the wing role it’s:

Sholl>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Jones

I love this new Bookmark feature .....for someone who spearheaded a 10 year anti-Mackay campaign (and proven wrong) ......I'm amazed you would then choose a hill with Sholl, who hasn't got a contested game to be seen

I'm looking for players to win Finals ....give me a Jones type player over pretty game Sholl, who will disappoint massively with finals type pressure

The pick # is irrelevant .....unless you also want to hang your hat on Atkins in the 80's pick

Even if Sholl massively underperformed in finals, he'd still be ahead of Jones on a wing. Jones struggles to get 15 touches in a H&A game against a bottom 4 side.

Neither are finals type players if we're being honest.

I'd like to see what Nankervis has to offer. Looks like he hunts the ball a bit more than our other wing candidates.

How closely did you watch Sholl in the SANFL finals at that level...pretty average.

But then you had Isaac Smith from Geelong winning the norm Smith playing a traditional wing position.
You wouldn't call him a contested beast but plays his position well to win a grand final and be BOG

Yesterday doesn't define tomorrow .....if we weren't talking about a 58 game player, but a 100 game player, then maybe

But for two seasons Jones has played in DEF, a non natural position, he's had to learn .....it's just my opinion, but his 2022 season saw good improvement

People still confuse Draft pick with possession count / influence .....it's not a correlation that can be used, history shows that .....how's Lukosious going, now there's a disappointment .....yet he's still better than Sholl
