Re: Fitzroy Stars 2008 Season

Santa Teresa put up a gallant fight, only to lose 9.8 (62) to 17.14 (116). They were outmatched by the Stars, who boasted names including captain Lionel Proctor, formerly of Richmond, Lally Bamblett (son of Melbourne and Footscray player Les), and Alan Thorpe’s nephews Corey and Alister.

Kane Cooper from the Fitzroy Stars was named the best player on the ground.

In a show of support for the 'No More' campaign – aimed at encouraging Australian men to stand up against violence and abuse of women and children – players from the curtain raiser, Essendon and Richmond linked arms before the Dreamtime at the 'G match.

From the AFL Website.

Well done Stars boys, it was great to win on the MCG. So many positives have already and will continue to come from this win.

Hey boys, Just wanted to say congrats to the Stars on a deadly win.. Also looking for your thoughts about the commentary of that game..
I have a few comments/questions on it.. :
1) Disappointed by the term of "another Stars player" whenever our boys got a possession... (Did they not have a players list???) &
2) Thursday's footy show promoted the curtain raiser of this Big game being Indigenous Round and all - with NOT one Fitzroy Stars player there..(or Victorian Aboriginal for that matter) Do they know that WE are here or wha?
Pretty sad that this Victorian game still sits it's Victorian Koori players in the back row!!!:(
Maybe Morgs was right about the Stars Vs Rumba... Need to promote our Vic boys MUCH better than the previous years!

Yes, we were given the cold shoulder from the media during the entire lead up to that match, it seems that the media dont know that there is an aboriginal dominated side in its first year back and just get on the side from the remote community.

Stars Vs Rumba would be the ideal match up. But i think the new system is the winners from the state-wide carnival's (Vic and NT) play each other. Rumba got it last year for being the only aboriginal dominated side in Vic i guess. Another idea is that there could be a lead up match (Maybe during the pre-season for the Stars Vs Rumba and the winner out of that might get the rights for the MCG game?)...Or better still, we get to go back year after year and defend our title till we loose then give it to Rumba until they loose it then give it back to us.

But yeah, if we do happen to win the carnival again and come back to the Dreamtime At The G next year. We will have to get much more media coverage.

I won't go into the treatment we got last year compared to the Tiwi Bombers boys. The winners from the casrnival each year is unrealistic, if say Warma Turtles win this year, there is no way we would be able to pull players from all diferent Leagues and levels. An example is that Club won't release players to play for a commuinty based team with no insurance unlike Stars and Rumba would have through their League. Point being one of our players from Rumba injured himself playing for the Stars on Staurday night which he can't play fdor two weeks, very upsetting for us. For Rumba I think a rotation with the Stars would suit better until maybe a Commella get back in or any other Indigenous Club playing week in week out.

Tell me how would have the Stars gone if it was the Club side that plays in the NFL and not the Carnival team it may have been a lot closer game, if not the game the next day would be. Santa Teresa are a community, while Tiwi Bombers are a state league side

Just to throw in my 2 cents worth - if there is a possibility that Stars will be at the G next year - planning with the NFL as early as possible could look at things like trying to schedule the mid season break near this game (depends on the AFL fixture I know) with Stars and their opposition actually playing on the break weekend - that way the club players can do both without backing up the next day..... working around things to accomodate its teams is only going to make the NFL more respected and potentially get more and bettter press coverage along with the Stars...wins all round

If it was our regular NFL side i still beleive we would have won just not by as much. And the game the day after at Panton Hill was closer than it looked on the scores with us getting home by about 70 odd points because we were only about 5 points up at the start of the final quarter.

Re: Fitzroy Stars 2008 Season

The Fitzroy Stars will be hosting the 2008 VAYSAR Statewide Football Netball Carnival. The Fitzroy Stars will be chasing their 4th Div1 Carnival win in a row in Melbourne on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of October. 2008 just keeps getting bigger and bigger for the Fitzroy Stars Football Club, cant wait!!:thumbsu:

which grounds will be used?

Re: Fitzroy Stars 2008 Season

That is yet to be determained. We would like a venue with multiple grounds so that we are able to keep everyone together. I'm pretty sure the cricket season begins on the same weekend which may complicate things further. Does anyone have any suggestions on a venue with 3 or 4 ovals?

Not sure whether they would or wouldn't, but why not try somewhere like Marcellin college.

They have a heap of sports grounds (not all Marcellin's - there is also the Carey Sports grounds & Bulleen Temp accross the road and right next door trinity as well) in that vicinity and I would think it would be a near perfect venue for your carnival.

I have no association with any of the above, just offering up a constructive suggestion.

Good luck with it all and please post back details when the event is to be staged etc. I'd love to come and watch. :thumbsu:

Re: Fitzroy Stars 2008 Season

Good work Stars, would be good to see you guys playing finals in your first year back. Lower Plenty is the test this week, should be a good match.

Know a lot of the boys down there and noticed Johnny Hayes kicked 8 last week. Clearly going well at the moment?

Worst news I've had this year. Hope the grounds will be better then a couple of years ago. They were terrible.
Was hoping for Mildura or Echuca myself, anywere in Country Victoria would've been good, but never mind. You can only win it were they play it.

Well yes, it would be terrible news for other side's knowing that they gotta come down and play against the best carnival side on thier home turf. Although im expecting an even carnival this year. My understanding is they will select 6 place's (Melbourne, Geelong, Shepparton etc.) and rotate it each year. They have alreaddy announced Geelong as the 2009 venue.

The Lalor ground which was used as the main venue for the 2005 wasnt bad at all, and the other grounds i didnt have any problem with either.

Wasnt a fan of playing on the cow paddocks last year, just some grass with goal posts sticking up from each end (Which was the case for the 2 grounds located near the Rumbalara home ground).

Also the Fitzroy Stars Football Club didnt host it in 2005 and we will be working on bringing the community one of the best carnivals in 2008. hopefully when it roles around to us next time which will probably be around 2014 we will have our home ground up and running and being able to use that as a main ground.

It will also be interesting to see how many players at the carnival will be approached by some of the clubs in the NFL.

Thanks for that, i will pass that onto the board to investigate it a little more.

More details will be posted in this forum as they are confirmed. (Grounds, all the side's playing etc.)

Lower Plenty will be a good test to see where our boys stand. Kane Cooper is suspended and will be a big lose for us against Lower Plenty. It would be great to play finals in our first year, it will certainly help attract more players for coming years that will help us work towards our goal of winning a division 2 premiership.

Johnny Hayes has been brilliant. He had been using his opposite foot because of an injury, at Panton Hill the trainer felt that Johnny could use his preferred and he has kicked 6 and 8 as a result. Will be great to see him continue his form against some of the better side's.

All great players, but what is it exactly you are wanting to know about them?...Also noticed you have Northern Socials CC as your other team, who are you exactly as i play there also.

Re: Fitzroy Stars 2008 Season

I need the information so I can give the club a good plug in The Northerner and other media outlets.

I played in the Socials third XI premiership in 06/07 with Troy Austin and Alan Thorpe.

Re: Fitzroy Stars 2008 Season

Been announced that the 2008 VAYSAR State-wide Football Netball Carnival hosted by the Fitzroy Stars Football Club will be played at Barling Reserve and the Netball at Reservoir district Secondary College across the road on the 4th and 5 of October.

Re: Fitzroy Stars 2008 Season

Firstly I’d like to congratulate the Fitzroy Stars on the first season and for being very competitive for a team that was brought together only at the start of the year and started playing in a good competition . I follow a few boys that are playing with you guys up in the big smoke. If someone would be able to give me an update on a couple of blokes from down this way because I’ve been on holidays. How have Aaron Gepp, Johnny Bell, Ollie Ressom and Jason Kanoa going? If I remember correctly, Jason was a junior player down here and I played against his father and uncles years ago. The Heywood 3 Gepp, Bell and Ressom are sorely missed this year at the Lions and will be enjoying winning a couple of games.

Thanks for your comments mate.

Dont think Gepp has actualy played a game for us yet and i think the Ollie may have played 1 or 2 (not sure) but Johnny Bell has been a good inclusion for us, he has also missed more games than he has played through 2 weeks suspension and an ankle injury he has been carrying for the past few weeks. Jason has been pretty good, but he was bitten by a spider and was out for pre season if i remember correctly and most of the start of the season, just needs abit more fitness and he can go a long way in our seniors.

Re: Fitzroy Stars 2008 Season

Epping players, supporters and committee were disappointed in the non attendance of the Stars entourage in the rooms after the game.

Tonight I have heard that the reason why Stars players did not come into Eppings rooms after the match was they were paying Epping back for not voting in favour of having them enter the NFL.

Is this true?

The ballot was without Stars people in attendance so where did they hear it from?

Why not face the committee and ask them to their face......you will find that your information was seriously misguided if this is what you believe. The Epping representative voted in favour and also congratulated your president and coach on the night.
