Melbourne police hunt for white van after second kidnapping attempt in two weeks

Police are searching for a man in a white van, who approached a 14-year-old in Tullamarine in Melbourne's north-west and asked her to get into his vehicle.

The Blackburn one reminds of something that happened in Nunawading about 10 years ago.

We lived on the south side of Eastlink, but used to walk across the fly over to exercise on the Koonung Creek trail on the north side.

My daughter (about 5) had run off a bit ahead of me, while I had the dog and a pram for her to get in when she got tired.
A white van drove slowly past Warekila Pre-school towards us. I was hidden by a clump of trees at a bend in the road. I didn't think much of it until the van did a u-turn and slowly came back the other way.

I had emerged from behind the trees as the van came back around the bend. The driver saw me and went from slow cruising speed to absolutely flooring it. I remember being very surprised by the power of the acceleration. The van had no windows other than the windscreen and front doors. The driver was Asian in appearance, middle-aged and had one of those Covid masks on (way before Covid). He was on his own, so no idea why he would need a mask.

I contacted Crimestoppers, but fully acknowledged it was useless without other corroborating incidents.

Very concerning behaviour that I hope doesn’t escalate.

I'd have thought CCTV would have managed to capture a clear license plate.

I wonder if any dashcam may have picked up the number plates?

It could be coincidental but 4 in 3 weeks?
Is there some dark web group that have chatted about this and some perverted enough to even attempt child abduction?

Or a common workplace with access to unsigned work vans?

Very strange. Really concerning.

Plenty of unsigned white vans getting around for legitimate purposes, very common for various trades and delivery drivers.

Thus why dodgy folk use them, one blends in to the next and no one generally thinks much about them.

Hopefully they get caught before they succeed. Horrible stuff.

So was this just a series of misunderstandings/false reports/false alarms??
Couldn't help but notice that at the same time these were reported, similar reports were being made in Hobart (where I have family). They also amounted to nothing.

Hoping this was just more white vans on the road for Christmas deliveries rather than something nefarious.

It all seems to have died down but as always be alert, not alarmed.

This was at my son's school, he was in grade 3 last year and it happened coincidentally the week we started letting him walk halfway home by himself, we stopped that pretty quick then!
