I did the same flights, if you struggle to sleep on planes, depending how long your stopover is, check out the snooze cubes in Dubai airport (google it). I had a good 5 hour sleep in one on my return stopover

Only have a 3 hour lay over in Dubai (both ways) but thanks.

I haven't flown on QANTAS to LA since I was a kid, so for me V Australia is fine. My dad has flown QANTAS on the A380 both times he's flown this year and he does prefer it to V Australia. I think the only reason we fly V Australia when we can is because their frequent flyer program is a lot better than QANTAS.

Avoid Southern China 100%. What they save with cheap flights, they have a monopoly on Guangzhou airport which is disgusting and full of rats. Most of the stop-overs are 10 hours or more, but it costs over $15.00 for a coffee and you are not allowed to leave the airport as you can't obtain transit visa. I cannot be any clearer- AVOID.

Pretty sure there are. You should be going through Terminal 3 which is all nice and new. Avoid the bathrooms/showers in Terminal 1 they're not as clean
Actually, they've just built Terminal 4 which is for Emirates + QANTAS A380s

If aiof is going there from Adelaide though, he'll land Terminal 3 and have to go to the new terminal.

Yeah - I actually work the other side of the airport....
I'm not 100% sure what facilities are in the new part as I haven't been inside.
Would be fairly safe to assume they'd have something though for transit passengers.

I arrived back in Melbourne this morning from LA and had some difficulty locating the Qantas Club lounge at LAX (and from what I could gather it's a common problem). I arrived there via a flight from Las Vegas and jumped on the inter-terminal shuttle. I reckon it took 15 minutes of wandering and asking 3 different people for directions before I got there.
If you find yourself in the same situation: when you reach the 'Great Hall' on level 4, find a large entranceway which has a big DUTY FREE sign above it. Go through it and if you keep walking you'll see an escalator down to level 3. At the bottom turn left and you'll soon see signs for a lift to level 5 and the lounge.

Try flying into St Petersburg - felt I was in a cattle pen! Shocking but St Petersburg is a great city.

The airport in Taipei wasn't quite like a cattle pen but was scary as **** for a 14 year old. Guards with machine guns and a look that said, shoot first ask questions latter.

Just picked up CNS - JFK via Guam, Hawaiia, LAX with the return ticket via LAX - MEL for $1030 with United.

2 things, I said I'd never do the stop over thing again after going Air Pacific and going via Fiji. And another not real sure about United.

3 hours in HNL and will break it up in LA before going on to NY. Got some friends around LA and San Diego.

But for the price, too good to refuse.....hopefully...

Well, several months on, we made it. Not as bad as I thought. Continental airlines to Guam was ok. Got bumped to premium row - one row behind business - so had plenty of leg room.

United from Guam to Hawaii was a 6.5 hr leg. Problem is their 777's they use are ex domestic. So seating is 2-5-2. No bueno if you're in the middle. And I'm only 5'10 and my knees basically touched the seats in front.

Then a 777 from HNL onto LAX. Easy going through customs in Hawaii though. One bonus I guess.

Flown with Virgin and Air NZ to LA. Both fine. Same Plane I think. Would put Air NZ ahead for service.

Taken Jetstar to Hawaii without issue a couple of times. It was a tight squeeze, but at $330 the lack of entertainment and food wasn't an issue, grabbed something in the terminal and took it with me. Then Air Canada from Hawaii to Vancouver, again no problem.

Biggest stinker was Cathay to Vancouver. They had these sliding seats at the time (think they've turfed them now) but they were god awful.
