SUMMARY: Flynn Appleby is a defender who really burst into late draft calculations after nullifying a number of top forwards in AFL-listed Kayle Kirby, as well as the dangerous Gryan Miers and Jarrod Brander. Appleby can play against tall or small opponents and is strong one-on-one. He can match most players on the lead, has top agility and speed, but needs to work on finding a little more of the ball, averaging 13 disposals from half-back. At the Rookie Me Combine, Appleby recorded an impressive 8.07-second agility test and 3.06-second 20m sprint to go with his 21.7 yo-yo test result. He has the potential to play as a lockdown defender who can move further up the ground with further development.

Greater Western Victoria Rebels’ defender Flynn Appleby had just 14 disposals, three marks and three rebounds in his side’s loss to Murray Bushrangers. But the level-headed defender was named his side’s best for good reason – he had shut down the dangerous Riley D’Arcy who a round earlier had used the goals like a dartboard against the Bendigo Pioneers, scoring 4.5 from a massive 26 disposals and eight marks, dominating that game. Against Appleby, D’Arcy had just six disposals, four marks and booted two behinds. After quarter time, Appleby restricted D’Arcy to just three disposals and one mark, an impressive feat given the in-form D’Arcy has booted 34 goals this season, at an averaged of 2.4 per game.
But D’Arcy has become Appleby’s latest victim in a string of impressive wins for the young defender, including against the VFL equal-leading goal scorer, Collingwood’s Kayle Kirby. In his debut for the North Ballarat Roosters, Appleby kept Kirby goalless, with the exciting small forward booting just one major for the day – when Appleby was not opposed to him – which was a sensational feat considering the Magpies romped to an 87-point victory that match.
Last month, Appleby was assigned the task of shutting down one of the TAC Cup’s most dangerous small forwards, Gryan Miers from the Geelong Falcons. He nullified Miers to just 10 disposals and two marks. It was another huge tick for Appleby, with Miers averaging 2.4 goals from 16 disposals and four marks so far this season.
His latest performance against D’Arcy drew praise from his coaches and Rebels’ staff with Shaun Kelly describing Appleby’s performance to Rebels TV as “absolute top shelf”.

Those are some impressive stats in the agility (top of afl combine by .03 seconds) / and yo yo test (fourth in afl combine). We haven't had a true lock down defender since marley left (is that fair on ramsay?)... Welcome aboard Flynn, hope you can kick better than Marley
Going by the highlights he can’t kick.

I like the look of him from that video. Seems to be able to shut down forwards like a glove and agile but you would hope for more possessions if he is to become good on the rebound. Won’t ever take the mostor forwards. Also his kicking seemed just ok too

He is a good pick up. He had been linked to the Pies and Freo for a little while. had some terrific games late in the year and the big tick for the kid is he can play tall and short. The mail I got on him was his real asset is his ability to read the ball through the air as quickly as his opponent and he then translates that to body position. He did a great job on Brander late, Kirby and he also kept Miers goalless as well. They put those games down to the above so suspect you will hear things along those lines from Dekka.

Number of clubs are circling him so expect him to go particularly after his effort on Brander late in the year where he really dominated him. Still pretty thin and needs time but he is a classic HB who plays a bit taller and tougher than what you think. Lovely mover, take a great mark, reads the play well and can intercept and then get involved in the transition forward.

Yep, he's great value. Elite athletically both in agility and endurance. Quite quick and can kick. Just needs to find more of it as he's played as a lockdown defender thus far. Has plenty of scope.

20m sprint time (in post 3) of 3.06 suggests he's not that quick. Might be his agility and reading of play (going off comments this thread) that make him appear quicker than his pure leg speed
