Footscray-Fitzroy Merger

You should read Ross Oakleys book “The Phoenix Rises” as it tells the Footscray/Fitzroy merger story in detail especially how bad the League finances were and at that time how CH 7 screwed football by paying way under for the TV rights for a very long time.

I might just do that, thanks.

Sorry Bud, but Stand alone VFL sides have been around long before the Footscray..Again another original idea
Redveloped before North..Opps again half a dozen other clubs redeveloped before you. Original idea 2
Edgewater..hmmmm, Im sure you werent the first to build a pokies venue..Original idea 3
Ballarat...original idea 4..
Do you see a pattern here?

Lol u think you're doing all this groundbreaking stuff, Fitzroy played home games at Hobart in the early 90's, well done on your scoop. Your 24 years behind a defunct club on that one. But no, you guys are revolutionary and despite these great initiatives happening now at Whitten Oval we have no ideas. None. Every club has brought their original ground back to play at, and every club gets over 10,000 people watching their VFL team. Every club is building a whole venue away from their ground. Every club has a partnership with Liverpool to help mens health.

U copy splitting our VFL team up, we should just have a sook about how unoriginal you are. Oh no, you stole Weribee from us  The ideas you copy aren't even good ones, something u only finally realised now

Don't blame the Dogs because poor administration cost you Ballarat, its petty and sad

Hmmm. i don't see any attempt to mix footscray into it at all, to be honest.

Hence the quotation marks for "trying" - totally agree they're doing donuts for that. You wouldn't even think when watching a Fitzroy Bulldogs game that Fitzroy had merged with anyone, but rather they'd just added weird and unnecessary clutter to their exisiting jumper. Even Brisbane's jumper now is essentially a mix of Fitzroy's earlier 20th century and "newer" jumpers (small mercy I know for Roys supporters).

I'm not so sure it would. North went back to their old name.

Then again I'm a bit of a stickler for tradition with these things. I've never warmed to Western Bulldogs, simply. They're still Footscray to me.

Also, I read Oakley's book last year. The guy was a snake. He got Fitzroy in the end but thank goodness the Dogs held out against him.

I've been reading Oakley's book (from the library didn't want to line his pockets) and it really isn't that good. Firstly he is attempting to rewrite history as during this interview; secondly he seems to brush over most of the things which occurred under his watch (like a lot of the proposed merger details) while going into detail at just how bad his predecessors had run the league; and thirdly you'd be much better off reading Football Ltd. which covers the same ground but from an unbiased viewpoint.

Some of the comments he makes provide a good insight into his mentality though such as this caption beneath this cartoon;

Why would this cartoon, picturing him as a dictator sentencing a club to death, be a favourite and adorn his walls at home??? Disgusting.

The guy is a scumbag.

Only one club represents the western suburbs of Melbourne. Long live the doggies!
