Maybe it was game style at the time but his kicking absolutely crucified us. he'd break lines and carry the ball forward, so the rest of the team would forward of their man running off, then he'd directly turn it over and it'd be an easy path back to goal for an opposition with good skills. This would just happen time and time again with him. I remember a derby in which we got flogged on a wet night, he did this 3 times in the first quarter as well as missing goal, out on the full. Freo were actually on top at that point but had no score on the board, then eagles got into gear and pantsed us. I was thrilled he left to be honest. Happy that he's doing well now but he really did kill us. I line breaking mid is no good if they cant kick. Brad Hill's kicking wasnt far off. He was a specialist at the flower bag. Much better player when he runs, carries and links up with handball instead of kicking.

Re Hill, he won the kicking test at the draft combine and was actually a very good kick but fatigue due to his gut running affected a lot of them.

Tabs was 19 when he was drafted and 20 when he debuted. Treacy just turned 19 last month. Waaaaaay ahead!
I'm not going to argue with stats, but im not sure what "retention rate" is? is that where he hits his target, or where the ball doesn't get turned over?
Stats can be misconstrued as well. Chris Mayne has a great efficiency rate as well because he chips it so safe and short, not because he breaks lines and hits risky kicks. He wont go down in history being remember for his kicking. My feeling with these stats is it was probably when Hill was doing the same, short chip kicks across half back to set up play, which is fine, but his delivery into the forward line after breaking lines wasn't great and that's where my comparison with Langdon comes from. rating someones kicking can be looked at from different perspectives. People in the excellent category are the Mundys, Hurns, Rich's of the world. Hayden Young isnt far off being in that group
All i know is he's not a nice player to watch kick the ball on the run. standing start, chipping around half back is fine, but the long runs he does so often end in a mongrel punt. Sure that may be due to fatigue but he's not in the kicking class of a Mundy or Shannon Hurn

Hill is a good kick inside 50 within the limitations of his skillset. He makes good decisions and hits simple short targets regularly. He's not Cerra hitting people lace out leading to the fat side through traffic or Young floating the ball 55 metres over 3 three sets of defenders and gently, as if it was destiny, into the forwards lap, but he's still highly effective.

While I'm on the topic lets bookmark something: Young is already the best long field kick in the comp.
Nobody was claiming Hill was an elite kick when with us, just that he wasn't a complete liability by foot like you were making out.
Retention rate is a fantastic stat because it speaks to players kicking within their abilities to retain the ball (i50 retention is gold). I'd love to see this year's stats because Langdon was bottom 3 in 2019 but I suspect he's turned that around a fair bit by kicking within his limitations (similarly McCluggage who was bottom 2 in 2019).
i'll take that. I think he'll be the best of our draftees (better than Brayshaw, Cerra, Serong etc)
Bloody hell my memory. Confused him in my mind with the other WP colt. Still think he was a good kick.

I couldn't stand hill. The game in 2019 against the Swans when he burned an open Sandi in the goal square to have a shot and flower bagged it. Had figjam written all over it. Don't miss him one bit.
It's not really an age thing imo. Treacy is just much more influential than Tabs was because he can football better. Just reads the game better imo and looks more confident than Tabs back then
Did his time and left on good times. Same as Crozier.
I feel different with regard to Bhill, Neale and Hogan. Lesser extent Cerra. In a time when we needed these big names we put alot of Time/Money/Traded draft picks into, they left us high and dry.
I didn't think so, there's a difference between a loser culture and a club losing - particularly when playing lots of young guys. In fact he said initially it was fun when they were playing lots of kids, but the novelty wore off! I thought his comments were pretty honest and did not see them as potting Freo.
Had we started winning and perhaps made finals, then maybe he would’ve stayed. But he’s from Victoria and that’s the risk we take. He’s always been a good guy though. Played in the WAFL Grand Final and genuinely enjoyed winning the flag then.
Strangely I don't feel an anymosity towards bhill like I do to neale and hogan. Probably softened the blow that he's now not even half the player he was for us and we ended up with serong from that trade.
