''Just saw a replay of Adam Grocke - Eagles
who played Key Forward for Sth.Australia vs. West Aust. and kicked 6 goals b/f 1/2 time..dominated this state game from the 2 quarters i just saw on the ABC replay from last Sat
Great ready made recruit ala Crameri ?''

Neese: Yeah he was brilliant in that game. Also copped a whack in the head that didn't seem to slow him down. There are some great forwards in the SANFL atm

It does look a v potent Sth.Aust set of tall forwards..Just a case of kids maturing a few yrs later than at draft age...BUT NOW READY FOR AFL MB?

It's interesting to get a local's perspective Neese coz i just saw a half on an ABC replay..Neese:Have u anything more insight to offer on Adam Grocke ?

We seem to score very few goals from a forward taking a mark out on the lead.

Seems like our strategy is to bomb it long in the hope that Kreuz or Hammer take the mark, and if not, Eddie and Jeff will clean up the crumbs. Clearly not working!

The theory is quite good, but Hampson and Kreuzer are getting dragged so far up the ground they just can't make their way back through a forward thrust.

Still feel that Gibbs makes our forward set-up so much better but until Laidler, Yarran and Duigan make their way back with form, I can't see him employed forward of centre.

Right you are again Harker!

happy to have the 3 rucks in.
letting 206 cover the ground will leave us with tall targets
but i am also concerned with cringing everytime hampson shoots

Rue the day Matty Lappin left. What he was able to achieve with our forward structure post Fevola was nothing short of sensational. Everyone expected our forwardline to be a mess post Fev and Laps turned it into a potent weapon.

Feel as if we've lost a bit up forward since Laps left. That said, I don't think it's just the forward structure but also the fact that our general gameplan has been figured out. We play one key forward and teams are getting numbers back and just generating run and rebound off half back.

long time listener, first time caller...

Im not sure there is a huge problem, champion data advises that Carlton are number 1 in marks inside 50 this year (avg 14).

They are also last however in goals outside 50 with only 3..not an avg of 3...a total of 3... says to me the midfield are not kicking goals!

Just saying.

I cringe as I type this - Gumbleton ?

**** no. We've had more than our fair share of injury prone forwards over the years.

Cornelius from Brisbane I would have a serious look at. Has to work on his defensive efforts, but he has a clean set of hands. If he bulks up a bit and is granted opportunity he could become a handy player for us.

Would only cost a 3rd rounder + a sweetener at most.

Yeah I said this last year after the Sanfl GF where he dominated aswell!! would be a handy option I think, can only know if we take a risk:)

Watson, first game back, 7 marks.

Given the Bower experiment failed dismally, do we plonk Matty at FF and hope he catches a few within the 50m arc?
If we dont have a match up down back for him then he is a far better option then Bower up forward.

We just need to play all the kids ro begin to form a view on their ability instead of blokes we already no wont improve like Bower, Joseph, Russell, Thornton, Curnow etc.

I wonder what Adelaide didn't see in Curnow....

Once Fev was given the boot we haven't had a permanent solution to our forward structure. It's not good enough we are still rotating the same "experimental" forward players ie Kreuzer, Hampson, Jamison, Thornton, Bower, Henderson (acknowledge he was recruited as a fwd). Waite is a part timer at best because of his body, Rowe unfortunate. Yes We have recruited Mitchell, for the future but not good enough by the recruiters and forward coach for mine. John Barker forward coach? Surely Swanny we can lure someone better to the club. What about Saad as a rookie? Would have come in handy now to place some pressure on the out of form small forwards and made them accountable....he is kicking goals atm! Setanta our bits and pieces guy who bled Blue in his veins would have at the very least fired the boys up with his passion and bagged a couple here and there and presented as a target. Before you jump down my throat... once again not a permanent fix and not the long term answer but might of seen us through a tough stint with injuries like now? I can't confidently say that choosing Bower was the right answer.

In the meantime it's bomb it high and long to Garlett and Eddie Betts...pftt what a joke. Oh well buckle up and strap yourselves in, more heavy turbulence ahead!!!

Been saying it for so long, to me it seems a no brainer but a lot of things that we aren't doing seem no brainers.

We don't have any players we target and the unpredictability is working against us.

While I'm all for Henderson being down back circumstances changes. Waite and Henderson up forward and hope Jammo, Bower, Thornton, Watson etc...can hold things up back.

Injuries are killing us, even all our depth is injured. Then when they get back they'll need a few weeks to get match-fit. Then on top of that we have blokes playing that missed alot of pre-season and as such are down on form. We have injuries in our most important structural areas too. Only up side is if we make the 8 players will be fresh.

Even Scotland's out for 3 weeks now. It's seems someone kicked a black cat after round 3.

There is a way that the best football teams line up to play. Itis why St Kilda 09/10 carried Kozy; it is why Geelong used N. Ablett, Hawkins despite form and then drafted JPod late in life; it is why Hawthorn drafted David Hale; and why Collingwood will persist with Dawes.

There is a formula of KFPs that is really simple and is vital to the correct overall functioning of any side. I don't know that Carlton gets the balance right very often. Your biggest strength is quite a problem because your half backs and mids are so ridiculously good when they are up and running that it continues to allow Ratten and co to paper over the cracks.

Kreuzer simply must play as your number 1 key forward. Take the hit in the midfield for a while and continue to play Warnock and Hampson in the ruck. The form I saw from Casbolt (against Bendigo in one VFL game last year) aside Kreuzer is the only guy on your list that seems genuinely suited to being that battering ram, focal point of a forward line. This sort of player make Betts and Gartlett that much more effective.

Waite is not the answer, he works up to wings effectively but it is more of an ancialliary role and it is not deep forward.

Walker is, again, not a focal point for a forward line. He is a destructive mid sized option who has the athletic attributes to "play tall" but this is not the same thing.

I wonder if you guys have the salary cap room to throw big $ at Cloke.

You'd also have to question whether forward structure has anything to do with the results of the last month though. It is probably more or a preliminary issue given that the midfield has totally stalled. At this stage the forward structure is the sort of thing that will be hung around Ratten's next at years end.

Just going to bump this while everything I said in the OP is currently happening for all to see. That moment where judd had a free in the circle, kicked wide then we went wide again to hamspon who had a shot from the boundry line. Watching them play from behind the ball, run it up the middle and go direct often makes me sick when I see us do the opposite. This is not how these guys should be playing the game, this is not how I want my club to play the game. The only solution is to clean out the football department in a big way.

Game isn't over but it is just about time to play all of Bootsma, Dale and Buckley and send some underachievers like Gibbs back to the VFL. Time to get a few good draft picks.
