Fox Footy Channel - Waste of space in the off-season

Does anyone actually know much about this? (apologies, haven't read the whole thread)

I think about this often, as it seems like such a waste of a network. Is it a funding issue? Could Fox Footy not scrape together enough moulleh to not go into a six month hibernation (minus draft night)?

If they're going to show season replays over and over again, they could at least manufacture the top ten matches of the season, and then show them in order with brief interviews and commentary in between.

Moreover I personally believe they should run low budget football talk shows during the off season. Experiment with some new identities and personalities, as well as types of shows. None of this Jason Dunstall and the one they call spud throwing tennis balls at eachother. They could have shows where they make 2014 forecasts, delve in to any topical off season news, as well as report on teams early training and anything worth raising. For those football fanatics who only have foxtel for fox footy, this could create a great and healthy anticipation during the off season.

I think it would definitely be a cost thing.

Much easier to program the season to run end on end and hit repeat, than it would be to have a different schedule each week*

*In saying that, I have no idea how it actually works... but that's how I assume it would go.

FWIW, here's how I would do it each week:

Fashion the off-season like the regular season.

  • Each week, you play the corresponding round's matches from Monday to Wednesday. Thursday to Friday could be a "last time they met" scenario, except they replace them with a classic match between the two teams (if available) as they get ready to broadcast the next round's games.
  • Play the corresponding round's telecasts (if they can get the rights to them) from the WAFL, SANFL, VFL, Tassie leagues etc.
  • One of the nights can be State of Origin night (or state matches, if they go back prior to 1977).
  • Another prime-time night slot can be a classic match from years past.
  • Why not do a 'The Hangar' or the Pies version (name escapes me) marathon? Sure, supporters of the other 16 teams might not give a crap, but Dons and Pies fans would probably watch.
  • What about trying to get old Brownlow Medal telecasts to put on air?
  • Classic SANFL, VFA or WAFL matches/finals/Grand Finals?
  • Once 2013 replays are done, why don't they go back and play all of 2012? And then 2011 etc?

You'd think that would stem the annual attrition rate from Fox Footy.

The best idea of all though? Hire me to run their programming in the off-season. I come relatively cheap.

---------

I believe ch 7 own most other footy matches of the past so i cant see them leasing or selling their " gold mine " to Fox or ch 9 or any other company .
Fox and ch 9 or whoever must go and be creative and make doco's etc

Channel 7 only own the rights to pre-1993 matches IIRC.

In 1993 the AFL wised up and took the rights. Unfortunately that didn't stop 7 from wiping practically everything they had in their library so as to save tape space (and I doubt they even use tape anymore... such a wastecrime).

Change the name to Fox Sports 4, have AFL during footy season, the odd show during the off-season, maybe a weekly AFL 360, old matches overnight. but during the day, cover the cricket.

And you know that #keepsportfree bandwagon? I'm more in the #putallsportonfoxtel group.

As I agree with most of you. I do find watching replays of after the bounce funny. However, I would love it if they put a round up of what happened each day during trade week and then we could have a heap of interviews and stuff like it. Just to break up the replays of footy games.
There are other channels to watch.

Gerard returning for new summer show "360" Wednesday nights at 7:30pm.

Will cover all the sports news, incl footy, racing, cricket etc.

I was forever in the #keepsportfree camp until i got foxtel
Its the only place willing to show sport live

During the trade period they could have done an all day trade show (trade radio style). Day one and the final day could have been hosted from Etihad Stadium, while the others in a studio. They could have special guests, interviews, people out and about chasing rumours, phone calls/emails/tweets, different segments etc.

Another idea would be too show the whole draft combine on TV during that's course.

I'd have AFL360 every night preferably, but once a week would do.

They should do a quiz show somewhere in there.

They could do little 30 minute clips on the draftees (like the 'profiles' show)

Club by club in depth 2013 reviews, summer snapshots and 2014 previews

30 minute thrillers

AFL World??? (Like Premier League world)

They could just do shows regarding AFL players tips/choices (Ashes/Melbourne Cup/Aus Open etc) although that might be uninteresting.

Run us through the 2014 fixture show.

If I can think of anymore I will post them, my last couple of ideas are pretty crap though.

Irks me that 360 stops just when things actually get interesting with trades and drafting etc.

Well for one thing, Gerard would be unavailable as he continues his love affair with a pregnant Black Caviar. This is horse racing season for Gerard.

Piggie could chair a weekly programme.

Personally I'd love to see games from the 80's 90's and early 2000's just being shown at random, any games. The style of footy being played back then was tough, skilful and engaging to watch.

Just get all games that they can get a hold of/have rights to that were decided (or not decided, drawn) by a goal or less and randomly select one via computer, then remove it from the pool once its shown. More interesting than just replaying season 2013 over and over again.
