FTA-TV Fox Footy's 'History Month'

Drew Morphett was interviewed on the JYB segment on SEN and he said that Fox purchased all of the old ABC footage when they started airing The Winners repeats from the 80’s in 2015, so they must have access to more than they are showing or The ABC threw out a lot of stuff before Fox got their hands on it.

I’d dare say the ABC wiped a heap of stuff well before Fox got access to it.

I reckon apart from all games being live fox footy is no better then it was back in mid 2000s..at least they showed club shows for all teams and didn't spoil games by showing the scores of other games so you could watch back to back games....and at least back then we didn't have Robbo

I would like to see some film makers commissioned to do some 30 for 30 styled stories during the off season. If done well the AFL should be financing these (similar to NFL Films) and keeping the game in the spotlight during the offseason with quality offerings. The AFL website is a farce through Dec and Jan.

I think the Fox Channel should also have dedicated club days during the preseason. Before Xmas every club has a day allocated where they update on new recruits and training, in depth interviews with coaching staff, personal interest stories within the playing list, b&f coverage, players talking through game footage of previous season, etc

In January, a similar thing but include a membership drive for a couple of hours as well. Some sort of incentive for Fox subscribers to purchase membership during the broadcast.....just tossing ideas out now.

I feel most in AFL accredited media are happy to be lazy and keep their snouts in the trough and the footy channel is a major culprit in this.

We pay for this and deserve more 12 months of the year.

30 for 30 docos are the attenborough planet earth of sports. Simply brilliant. I doubt the afl or fox footy could come up with anything as polished as them. But i see what you're saying, something is better than nothing.

Interesting bolded part. I maintain that because afl is a domestic sport there's no competition for work. As a result the rank and file and comfy in their roles without any fear. OK, unless you work for sen and hutchy comes in. But yeah.

Agree with this; also it was great when they had the option for the late Sunday games of choosing your own camera angle and watching the match without any commentary. Thought that would become more widespread but instead it went in the late 00s.

Back on Fox Footy's coverage this month, I'm amazed that of all things they have access to the entire 1980 Saints/Dons H&A match. Apart from most finals, it's usually impossible to get full H&A VFL matches from the 1980s yet seemingly because of the Carman incident a match between two ordinary 1980 sides is fully available and repeated constantly.

Constantly. I don't want to see it again. Ever.

All I want from Fox is some creativity and originality.

Headliners was great, White Line Fever excellent (TV talkback instead of hearing Robinson drone on and on, Clinton Grybas RIP) and even Grumpy Old Men had it's place.

Just give us something fresh and decent for our money.

This is why we won’t see any 30 for 30 type documentaries on AFL.

ESPN have huge archives with lockeroom, sideline and crowd footage of what seems like everything they’ve ever covered and yet in Australia you can’t even find full coverage of some VFL finals from the 1980’s.

I wouldn't be bothered at all if ''the greatest'' was given the flick. It'll reach it's sell by date relatively quickly anyway.

Two unfunny 'comedians' reading autocue counting down clips (mainly from the past 10 years) that we've seen over and over again.

I'll say it again....lazy.

It may be of no interest but on Fox League, they had a show called 13 to 1 which was basically a Rugby League themed version of ''the greatest'' and it lasted a handful of weeks before it was boned. I'd bring White Line Fever back and put in on following 360 on a Wednesday night.

The thing with 30 for 30 is they hit on topics that would be considered fringe or forgotten a lot of the time. So for afl you would focus on someone like a Stephen Oliver (what could have been) or an Adrian McAdam (where did this guy come from and where did he disappear to). Or a "who killed the vfa".

I've watched more footy on NITV where they are running country league grand finals a couple of times a week - at least it's fresh.

Agree. All it takes is some imagination. Doubt Fox has it and until they do, people will switch off over summer.

For the record:
1. Foxtel purchased the ABC tape library 1966-1987 (mainly episodes of The Winners highlight program, but also all the Grand Finals) and still have access to it. In contrast, almost all of the Channel 7 tape library up until 1991 is lost as Seven simply re-recorded over old videos to save money, whereas ABC stored their games on film.

2. However, it seems that they are only airing replays that Foxtel themselves have 'repackaged' for now-dead shows like Chooseday Night Football / Thank Fox it's Friday etc. Presumably because they've been edited down to run to specific times (30 min, 60 min etc). So even though they have the full version of 1981 Grand Final, you're only ever going to get a 55 minute package they made about eight years ago.

As a result, we're getting this Groundhog Day nightmare. In their first iteration back in 2002, Fox Footy aired all sorts of games from the ABC library but without repackaging them (e.g. all the grand finals in full) as well as full episodes of the The Winners. I think for a while they ran the latter in order, so for a week there they just went through the entire 1973 season from round 1.

It's annoying to think that they still have access to all those tapes, but can't be stuffed. The claims in this thread about cigarette sponsorship / rights issues with 7 / ABC wiping their games are interesting but baseless.

Well said Joe. Have switched over a few times to sew whats games are on, and it's so frustrating to see the same games played on a loop. By now most of us are getting itchy feet for footy. How about giving us something "new", rather than games we have already seen this month.

Also for the record, around 1988 a fire destroyed a number of Channel 7 master tapes:
- final quarter of the 1963 Grand Final, so 7 never released the rest, leaving us with Channel 9's last quarter replay.
- the whole 1964 Grand Final, so only snippets of the Channel 9 replay survive
- the whole 1965 Grand Final, but there is the full ABC telecast available
- the 1971 Grand Final, but somebody pointed a 16mm camera at the their TV and filmed it live, and that grainy, off-centred version survives, as does the ABC telecast.

One day, someone might convince 7 to release what they have of 1963, as well as getting 9 to release their colour recording of the 1973 Grand Final.
