It's been said before, but i prefer that he does leave. Will be better for Hawthorn going forward, having extra money to grab a decent player or two to make up for our deficiencies.

How will Buddy leaving be better for going forward.

Because we can splash the ~1mil on another player or two. We don't have trouble scoring without him and i would much rather the cash be spent on an Ablett for example in the midfield. Sure the club won't make as much money without Buddy, but i would rather see our team continue to stay at the top rather than worry about $$. I have enough heartache as it is with Arsenal lol

But when we do go forward, the best guy won't be there any more to receive it :(

Perhaps Buddy's contract is similar in that he's not happy with the length and/or any performance based clauses tied to any of those years?

This has been my thought all along. The details have probably begun $-it him to no end, with constant too-ing and fro-ing. If he moves on it will be because they have muffed it up and made it all too complicated.

With 8 players in their thirties next year there may not be anyone to actually get it to him anyway

Listening to JK last night he doesn't seem to think that the hawks would be able to match any external offer but believes it's not about the money but rather what a club can offer him 'after' footy rather than the 'right now' - something a lot of us have been saying.

I can't belive some people honestly think we will be better off if Buddy leaves. He is a once in a generation player and he is not simply replaced, we are in our 'premiership window' atm, if he leaves, it might shut. Of course this all depends on what we can immediately do with the extra cap space. He is a superstar and every club in the AFL would do anything to get him.

The only free agent that would be available next year that would suit our needs would be Dale Thomas. Whilst a pretty good player, he is fairly overrated and we would end up paying overs for his services. I feel we can get Franklin to stay for unders and then trade and draft for what ever we need, as we have done in the past.

how the hell can anyone prefer he does leave..PREFER...
so we prefer a once in a generation player that excites, exilerates and busts his balls as much as any other player at HFC..leaves....for a (maybe) DECENT player.. or two...

look around grand final day replay.. no one more upset than Buddy..

i Cant believe he is not being given any benefit of any doubt... and im not gunna go back through the whole thread but i cant recall hearing "its been said before" I PREFER he does leave....theres prefer he tells us early, prefer he makes up his mind, prefer he gets it out of the way ...
so if buddy signs a 5 year going forward it will be the a great thing for HFC..
if he doesn`t it will be dissapointing and and it will NOT be the best for Hawthorn going forward...
but not the end of the world..
but I would never PREFER he leaves..never

and i could not give a sumo wrestlers jock strap about Arsenals problems !!

Agree, it amazes me some people would prefer him to leave.

I don't think at this stage I would say that I would prefer him to leave. That being said, I wouldn't be happy at all at the cupboard being laid completely bare in order to retain his services and the Hawks losing a couple of young-up-and-comers as a result.

I still believe the veteran rule could come to our rescue in this situation but this issue at stake could be terms of the contract other than money, such as duration and/or performance clauses. Should the club get Buddy to sign, I would also strongly hope that there be non-disclosure clauses as to what deal is eventually done.

Maybe some people know more about the situation than others
Hawkers thats true, but us regular punters can only put our faith in what we think we know and what we are told and deal in the facts that are available to us...
i guess we hear the rumours and innuendo but choose to keep the faith and believe in who and what we support..
so obviously those that "prefer" he goes have more knowledge to base their opinions on than the rest of us..
personally i will keep the faith..
but as you say there are those that may(think they) have more legitimate knowledge to prefer him to go..

This guy here has the right idea, signing Buddy with every last penny we have will set us back long term. This year is our last year for a flag, one last shot for us with Buddy then plan for the future, which i think should be without him if he wants to suck us dry for every last penny.

This is the way I'm looking at this after reading so many posts on this tread...If Franklins contract is causing divisions amongst the hawthorn supporters now, before the start of the season, can you imagine a year of this crap, by the media pumping this up with every opportunity they get, surely the club and players will get pissed off pretty quickly when Buddy's contract status becomes the topic of every conversation. ... The situation at the hawks well and truly has the potential to ruin our premiership chances, that cant be understated IMO....It will definitely be a long year!!

Do you think Clarko and the HFC would prefer him to leave?

I have no idea what they are thinking but i'm sure whatever transpires they will do their best to keep him

And thats why we're on a discussion forum. Pretty much nothing to say if we all had the same point of view

It a least gives Hawthorn the chance to show why we are the family club. Time to show the football world and Buddy why this is the place to play football. He has only asked to put his contract talks off until the end of the season. I would hate to see Hawthorn people turn on him just for that. He deserves a lot more respect then that.

Seriously? You don't think the media would micro manage every single performance, every single contest Buddy is involved in if he was stupid enough to say he'll be leaving at the end of the year, questioning his commitment to Hawthorn in each and every game? You think it'll create harmony when large sections of the Hawthorn crowd boo him every time he goes near the ball? And let's face it, if we have a bad year and look like not making finals, who do you think will be the first person the match committee drops when looking towards 2014? Wait... now let me think...

Nobody in their right mind would say they're leaving a club before they actually do. Not in the AFL where the game is a religion. For the individual player, it's just putting so much pressure and angst upon themselves it just ain't funny. Supporters will just have to hold their breaths and hope for the best. If he wants to go, he'll go. If he wants to stay, he'll stay. If it's the latter, we'll find out before the end of the year. If the season ends without a 'decision' being made, start looking at which players are about to become free agents from other clubs. That's it in a nut shell.
Exactly see what his non decision making has or will cause. He should stay or go before the season starts.
You may be right telling everyone he is leaving may cause problems as much as if he says nothing.
Indecisive rich young men thats what this is about. Good for you if you don't get bothered by it all.
Me? I am bloody well pissed off and I don't mind saying it. So thanks Bud, you'll keep your team and fans and members waiting on and wondering, well really, thanks for nothing then.

I honestly don't think he will be. But if he does I will neither be angry nor upset about it. It will be disappointing to have lost a player of his calibre but the team is so much more than Buddy Franklin. We have so much more talent coming through and his leaving would free up truck loads of cap space to replace him with other great players.
Good comment he's not god , he's another footballer . Stay or leave right now , free agency will have this shit going on forever from now on the kids heroes will piss off for money and it will really be a business for the likes of Pickering and others and, footy Aussie style culture will be f****d for ever because of dollars, and this bloke doesn't have to worry about dollars forever, if he has half a brain, his future is set.
You either stick or shove off.

Whats he waiting for ????

Considering he has a year to run on his contract that statement is just plain ridiculous.

You are seriously behaving like a child denied access to the lolly shop. Would be amusing if this was a test by buddy to gauge how much he is valued by supporters because if that was the case your little tantrums would have cost us his signature.

How about we close the thread and revisit it in October as this is going nowhere

Now that would be bizarre. There is no doubt he is HFC's supporters favorite player.

By not committing can only diminish that - and he has the example of cloke last year.

No point being in denial about this as it is not going to go away.

Buddy has made it a focus by his non decision and every football reporter will continue bringing it up every chance they get until he makes a decision.

I just hope buddy is well advised that he does take a massive risk not being signed up for say 2014-16 as he is exposed to any "event" such as a serious injury that could massively diminish his future value.

And that risk is probably greater than anything additional he could make from going elsewhere.

In addition if does eventually stay he probably will have greatly diminished the prospect of him being a future captain.
