News Frawley's asking price 800k

It sounds ridiculous at first but 800k is about his worth on the open market.

If it's a 4 year deal with 800k a year by the time that deal is complete he wouldn't even be in the top 20 paid players in the league.

Too rich for a club in our situation, but one of the developing clubs should really consider it, I think the Bulldogs would be mad not to approach him with their young list but lack of class defenders (other than Morris who is 32).

Hawks would Consider it I reckon. Especially with Lake having not long left

Fremantle must chase him hard because once McPharlin goes they are left with just Dawson and that's just crap.

If he had a brain he would be strongly considering Fremantle, for opportunities and success.

I would strongly consider it.

In our scenario we would pretty much be paying 400k for a quality defender in Frawley and another 400k to keep Reid as a permanent forward.

A player has served eight or more seasons of AFL football at one club, is NOT one of the top 25 per cent highest-paid players at his club, and is now out of contract for the first time since reaching eight seasons of service. (Unrestricted Free Agent)
  • The player is eligible to field offers from all rival AFL clubs.
  • If he wishes to change clubs, the player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club.
  • His club does NOT have the right to match the presented offer, and the player can move AUTOMATICALLY to the new club of his choice.
  • His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period.

Dang!

A bit rich if you ask me. He's a solid player, but weigh him up against other guys on 800k and he falls short.

I'd love him at Collingwood for the right price, but would we target him with Brown, Keeffe and Frost playing as our key backs for at least the next 5 years? Reid is still a viable option for a key defensive position as well.

First of all, good on the bloke for putting such a high price tag on himself. Not that I'd want him at the Pies on that much coin but if Tippett is pulling a million a season then by that reasoning he's well within his rights to ask the 800K.
Will he get that amount? He may but its not likely. Id imagine the main players looking to land him would be the Hawks, Bombers, Carlton and perhaps ourselves. Other teams would also be keen no doubt but as I understand it he would want to stay in Melbourne if he moves clubs. The most likely outcome would involve 650-725K over 4 with an option for a 5th.
The hawks would have the $ and will need a key back with presence once Lake is gone.
Essendon will look to other avenues to build its list with their draft issues. They are right in the mix for a flag too and are recruiting on a needs basis to get them there.
Carlton... No explanation needed here.
Despite their Pickett fence of no.1 selections over the past decade they somehow forgot to draft a spine of KPPs and somehow wound up with a team consisting entirely of mids and 'utility' types. Frawley wouldn't slot into their defence. Their defenders would slot in around him. He'd likely become their most indispensable asset.
Now, if we could lure him with a deal meeting his need for security, (5YR) front ended and with performances clauses after the 4th year we should have a real crack.
Geelong are a force because their back line are so solid that even when their mids aren't firing they don't concede too heavily as they have a brilliant ability to shut down opponents, intercept incoming ball and then move it forward causing attacking pressure that wears teams down. I hear a lot about their kids but its that back line of Taylor, Enright, Lonergan and Mackie that hold that team together allowing the youngsters to take the game on further upfield.
Imagine in the next couple of years a back line of Reid, Brown and Frawley as Keys. The marking, athleticism and elite kicking of Reid, Brown's ability to shut down opposition forward, Frawley's ability to play shut down whilst creating rebound when he peels off his man. Langdon would play Maxy's role exquisitely with his composure and smarts. Then there's Williams, Scharenberg the list goes on.
Well likely have Moore up forward learning his craft alongside the best contested mark of the recent era. Moore however has an exceptional set shot technique though from what I have read.
I'm not suggesting Frawley is the answer to all our problems but when we had a strong defence we were King. If we could bring him in and tighten up that area of the ground our mids would feel much more confident playing their natural attacking game. Like it or not our mids just aren't defensive players for the most part and instead of trying to change them we'd be far better of creating a platform from which they could utilise that natural ability.
Frawley would be great in the black n white. If it were up to me I'd recruit him as much to deny Hawthorn as I would to bolster our stocks hehehe....

That's how negotiations work... he asks for a lot more than he thinks he deserves then it get's negotiated down to 500-600k and both parties are happy.

Still think we need to target him, I don't know if brown keeffe and frost make a premiership defence.

I'm with you there 100% Blaze, in an ideal world he would play in tandem with our existing KPBs (not sure where Keeffe fits though if Reid plays back) however injuries to guys like Reid are killing us. Frawley has been fairly durable thus far and we need these guys on the field.
I also think he would be a big chance to really assert himself on the competition with us. He's been a shining light in a team that has been consistently putrid for years.
Also, you pointed out that asking 800K doesn't mean that once negotiations/contracts are drawn up that 800K will be the figure he's paid. Even Cloke's contract wound up a couple 100K/YR lower than the figures that were being bandied around.
He'd be a great pick up. Forget Gibbs and Mundy. This is our guy.

With Frost, Keefe, Brown and Reid, Frawley is probably not the right target for us.

I think he is as good as a Hawk to be honest.

With Hodge, Mitchell, Lake, Gibson, Hale, Burgoyne and Sewell all over 30, they will have salary cap room...and they also have a massive hole with Buddy leaving.

They have a history of cherry picking defenders, and they need to start future proofing for the retirement of Lake and Gibson. Scary thought to see Hawks with Frawley.

Frost and Keefe fine.
Brown is made out of glass and is so injury prone it is a worry.
Reid can be a permanent forward.

But at 800k, surely far too high. I suppose the old saying is, negotiate high if you are setting the price.

Melbourne are probably quite content with the situation as it is as well. They lose a gun player but receive band 1 compo which (assuming they are the spooners) would have them taking picks 1+2 in the first uncompromised draft in a while which could see them with a young forward setup to rival that of GWS.
Frawley would be long gone or in his twilight by the time they next make an assault on the flag. It's a win win. If this years talls are as good as the hype suggests perhaps Roosy may just decide to extend his stay a while longer.

Melbourne wouldn't be happy at all, they need good players, they are DESPERATE for wins... the last thing they need is more draft picks.

How much is a 1st round draft pick worth when all their 1st round draft picks turn into gutless spuds? - Tapscott Watts trengove cook Morton Blease the list goes on.

You do make a good point in that they've been atrocious in there drafting. I also agree that they wouldn't be happy to see Frawley go, I doubt any team would want a loss of his calibre.
On the flip side though that team really does need to be seriously rejigged/worked over.
I see Roos has them playing high possession football at the moment but it doesn't appear to be done with the purpose of denying the opposition the balls I much as it seems to be taking it back to the very basics. Learning your teammates kicking styles etc. as these guys just appear shot, out of confidence and lacking hunger.
It's from that perspective that I made the comments in relation to the 1+2 draft position. With Roos instilling belief in the group a couple of the best draftees available might just add to that. This draft is also looking to have some extremely good top end talent which would soften the blow somewhat.
It would non the less the be a big loss if he were to leave. Even with all of Heaters quirks and shenanigans I was devastated when he left and I kinda still am.
