Free Kick Stat for the Home & Away Season ....

Under the headline "Port's Pain" The Adelaide Advertiser has printed the free kick differentials for the 2008 Home & Away season, trying to support Choco's dummy spit in his post match conference on the weekend.

Port came in 2nd with 57 more free's against than for.

Guess who came in first? Hawthorn with NINETY more free's against than for.

No wonder we all think we're on the wrong end of it every week!

90 more free's against is an average of 4.09 per game.

Buddy gives away an average of 2.95 per game, so this differential is almost entirely accounted for by Buddy's free kick count!

Unfortunately we won't find a stat anywhere for how many times he's been trying to get to a marking contest with one arm held behind his back and no free has been paid to him!

Re: Free Kick Stat for the H&A Season

I can see why we give away so many free kicks, I will try explain.. I said try

The way the zone is set up once a opposition player tries to get through the zone the Hawks players will hold/bump the opposition player that just released the ball so they can't be used as a link up player.

I am trying to find some highlights on youtube to show you what i mean.. Hopefully someone knows what i am going on about and can explain it a bit better

yes i understand you completely :)

we often bump the player who just got rid of the ball, to make sure he cant get the ball again, often giving away a free kick because the contact is late, but advantage is paid

I hear both of you but funnily enough when it is only a bump or a block a free kick is rarely paid. Even if it is it is a good result because the advantage isn't much advantage when there isn't a link up player running past.

I think hawks definately deserve more frees against than frees for because of the way we play. Call it unsociable 'like all the unimaginative media' call it tactical we do hold players after they have got rid of the ball and buddy is the biggest culprit of dropping his head just before he lays a tackle and therefore never knowing if the player still has the ball. Also Buddy is the push in the back king.

All that aside I still think we get a really raw deal from the umpires. The umpires seem to be terrible at what they do and we get some frees that we shouldn't as well.

Personally I love Luke Hodges attitude to umpires... When he nearly gets his head ripped off in a high tackle and there is no free called he gets up and doesn't even look at the umpire let alone yell at him. If our whole team played that way and stopped whinging, pleading and complaining I think our free kick count would start going our way...

Re: Free Kick Stat for the H&A Season

I try not to pay too much attention to the fres for/against tally. it doesn't paint that much of a picture. I prefer to concentrate more on inconsistencies, frees paid that shouldn't have been, frees not paid that should, and their influence on the game.

sure, it looks like we've had a bad rub of the green when you see that we have had 90 more frees paid against us than for us, but when you take all those other factors into account.... well, it looks even worse!!

I'm sorry, but these kind of numbers have been around for years. Long before the zone.
Buddy is cruixified week after week. You only have to watch how many frees other forwards get that are called play on when Buddy is involved.
If he even appears to have his hand anywhere near an opponents back the whistle will blow.
For as long as I've been following the Hawks, we have almost always had less frees for than against.

Yes that's what i was trying to say, It seems we give a free kick away every few minutes because of this, so that is why we are on the wrong end of the free kick count every game.

I agree that Franklin does not get a lot of free kicks (Saints game and the West Coast game were the worse i have seen it.. He did not even get a chance to go for the ball the saints game especially), I was only saying why we never seem to win the free kick count at the end of the game

I love how Hodge does that with all of his game. If someone whacks him he just gets on with it. If he almost kills someone he just gets up and trots away. Love it!
