Friday footy set to remain on delay with Channel 7 screening Better Homes and Gardens

It's hard to understand why the AFL think they can get 1 billion this time around given that Ch 9 wont be putting in a serious bid.

channel 9 will put in a bid serious enough to ensure channel 7 put in a serious enough bid. ;)

Suits me too, daughter in bed, the mrs reading a book in another room, couple bottles of stout and bob's your uncle.:thumbsu:

Well for mine - i'm usually guts up halfway through the 3rd quarter.

In my case - Seven trying to get 4 hours of primetime coverage ends in about 1.5 hours of me watching their ads.

If it started at 7.30pm - they'd get 3 hours.

would the argument be any different if Ch7 did an an hour footy preview lead in and started the broadcast at 8:30 or are we all shitty because fiity is delayed due to cupcake, pansies, and folk art.

maybe get with the way UK lifestyle programs are headed !

lol @ all the punters trying to come up with scheduling 'solutions' that will 'make everybody happy'. Imagine the Ch7 head honchos sitting around a boardroom table, scratching their heads over how to 'fix' this 'problem'...

Junior Exec: 'Guys, guys, I've worked it out. We just chuck H&A on 7mate, start the footy a half hour earlier, and then condense half-time by removing ads so that the game finishes at a reasonable hour for the punters'.

Senior Exec: 'So we just throw away a half hour of high-rating programming onto our secondary channel (cannibalising our own market), as well as ten minutes of prime-time advertising space during the game, just to appease a bunch of punters whose lives are so devoid of meaning and purpose that they will watch our game no matter what time we schedule it?'

Junior Exec: 'Well, yeah... I got the idea off BigFooty'

:D

SJ speaketh the truth. Channel 7 is a business, based around selling commercial airtime. They know what they are doing. If I were a shareholder, I would expect no less. BH&G is shown on Friday at 7.30, leading into the footy, for good reasons which have already been explained several times in this thread. Seven = smart.

If you want to point the finger at somebody, you should be looking towards AFL HQ. They can set conditions on how the broadcaster must schedule their footy broadcasts, but in this instance look likely to decide to put substantial $$$ before live FNF. Given that they have already committed to two new teams which will suck through money like it is going out of fashion, I'd say the AFL are probably doing the right thing.
I wonder how much they can make from advertising during the play? A fair compromise might be zero ads, truncated format and banner/scroll ads during play. I would suspect in-game ads don't make as much, but if you can run them constantly, maybe they can?

In reality though, what works best is if it was live on Foxtel and delayed on 7. I don't see the issue with having to pay for live and ad-free coverage. The fact that people can't have that due to anti-siphoning seems unfair.

I may not be reading it correctly - but i don't think the AS list specifically precludes that scenario. All the AS list does is protect events of sporting and cultural from being exclusively sold to pay Tv networks.

The scheme means that Pay TV can bid for rights but only after either the FTA have secured rights and/or 12 weeks from the event.

We see that scenario with events such as the Ashes in England and also the current cricket WC where games will be shown on both FTA and Pay TV.

I don't see why the AFL couldn't negotiate that outcome. Obviously 7 aren't going to pay as much for non-exclusive rights - but perhaps this could be off-set by Foxtel paying more.

I think if we have live Friday night footy we will see a lot of in-game betting advertising.

We need to take a leaf out of the Middle East's book - violence on the streets.

WHOS WITH ME

Hey, Joffa got his message to the middle east, so anything's possible.:p

I say a fully fledged protest in front of the Channel 7 head offices, then a march to AFL headquarters is in order (which are conveniently right next to each other).

This makes too much sense.

I just don't get why the AFL says "OK then, Channel 10, will you put games on Live if we give you the Friday night time slot" and watch Channel 7 crap themselves at the thought of loosing it all together.

Channel 10 can have Friday nights and Sundays, channel 7 have their precious BH&G and Saturday football. Sounds like a win win to me ;)

i can't see 9 not going for these rights

Double-negative alert!!!!!

Channel 9 winning the rights could be a winner - promote themselves as the home of footy. In footy states - have AFL on Ch 9 and NRL on GEM - and in NRL states have NRL on Ch 9 and the AFL on GEM.

We might even end up with a scenario whereby all three networks have rights to games.

8:30 start suits me. I find its no great inconvenience to watch it on delay. By the time i get home from work, organise dinner, kick the dog and open a bottle of wine its 8:30 anyway!!

What if it's your team playing an away game?

DOn't know about you but I can't stand sitting there watching the game on delay and pretending it's live. The fact that I can jump on the web and see the final score inevitably becomes too great a temptation for me and it invariably ruins the experience.

Need to work on Ch 10 to take Friday Night footy. Don't know how that can be made to happen but it would put a huge dent in the Better homes and Gardens ratings.

That would be a great result for footy fans. Meanwhile Sydneysiders will see the NAB Cup - Pies vs Swans a half hour early this week with the match now being replayed at midnight instead of 12:30am. Cheers Channel 7

On Saturday night we get the NAB Cup live in Sydney on ONE HD at 7:00pm. Give TEN/ONE HD all the footy, they seem to be the only network that cares.

Can't believe so many people like tv shows about gardening.

I think 7 is trying to mislead us. It wouldn't matter what they had on, and BH&G doesn't rate through the roof.

I think they want footy on delay so they can
a) plan and sell their ad slots reliably
b) have more ad slots in low scoring games

If they have a low scoring live game they can't show as many ads as they'd like to sell, and they don't know in advance how many ad slots (goals to you and I) they'll have.

With a low scoring delayed game they can place ads at boundary throw ins or behind scores, so they can still place X minutes of ads. They couldn't do that live.

Id say a large percentage of better homes and gardens viewers are people who just leave the channel on waiting for the footy to start whilst getting ready for it after work

Are you kidding? Just about every second show is about cooking. Garening makes a nice change.

I like the delay. About 8.30 I check the score (usually late in the 2nd quarter), and if the game seems like a dud, and it usually is, I find something else to do.

Yes this does not surprise me and i think many people do the same. Channel 7 already gets great ratings on Friday night with a delay. Dont they realise that their ratings would improve significantly if they showed the game live - not just for peolpe dropping off if they can see the game is a dud online/radio, but kids and others who dont want to be up will midnight.

Given Ch7 is a business and is forking out hundreds of millions of dollars I can see why they're trying to maximize the revenue generating potential of the footy. Yep I get that, but it sucks. Particularly for those of us up in QLD who will be lucky to have them televise a NAB cup game, let alone any game before 10pm on friday night. I hate Ch7 and refuse to watch any of their TV shows that aren't AFL footy related. Imagine if all footy fans did the same.

The AFL wants to maximize the money they make out of the TV rights because its the biggest single revenue generating contract they can sign. And they want this money to help keep the war chest built up for the two new clubs as well (I hope) to support the other established clubs.

Reality is that we're not likely to see a significant change to how Ch7 televise the footy. I think the only way we'll get live footy telecast on friday nights is the AFL changing the start of a game til half an hour later. Maybe then Ch7 would meet half way and telecast the games live.

I feel for you Northerners, however is there not a deal that allows NSW/QLD viewers to see the game live on Foxsports on main event? Anyway, 7.40pm is late enough....the game is 3 hours long so you cant start it any later then that...

You need more discipline!

This.

BH&G could be shown any night and get a similar audience, there's no reason why it HAS to be on Fridays. And 7 lose 20-30% of their audience for the AFL by delaying it. So the reason must be financial - i.e they increase the number of ads, and therefore increase their revenue in spite of the fact that they attract a smaller audience.
